So my initial lockdown plan was disrupted a bit. I initially decided it would be a good time to use my furlough to finally sort out nid army for 8th.... never played a game since 8th edition dropped, initially didn't have the time nor money to update things and buy all the necessary books.
Then 9th get's dropped, so I'm naturally a bit hesitant on dropping any money on books. From what I've seen this will be much like 3rd-4th edition, old books should work until updated.
However seeing they said there will be a massive overhaul in weapon stats, unit point costs, unit stats etc, so do you think we'll have another minor index treatment? Also do people think the current data cards will still be usable?

No indici. The data cards are still going to be 90% applicable, depending on how big will be the day 1 FAQ.

Basically, your Codex and associated doodads will remain current until replaced.
But......nobody knows when a given Codex will be replaced.
So, I guess buy with standard GW related confidence. The points will likely be updated in a single document, ala Chapter Approved 2019.

The datacards for strategems will still be valid till the next Codex (though incomplete since they'll be missing all the Psychic Awakening strategems). All the Maelstrom cards are probably obsolete though. There's been no indications Maelstrom will exist in 9th edition, and future Codexes will probably come with Secondary Mission decks since GW has already said there will be army-specific secondaries.

Honestly, I would hold off man. You can still get the units you like. Id avoid any finecast or old kits but any fairly new plastic should be fine.
Books wise they have told us these PA books are written with 9th in mind but I would take that with a pinch of salt, pretty sure its marketing speak for "this stuff is till ok. honest!" While;e they sell you a new book invalidating the old 6 months later. So unless you have an urgent desire to get the books and you can wait. Id just wait.

I picked up the Ultramarine Datacards a few weeks ago, for the Strats and psychic powers.
I'm holding off on the Space Marine v2 cards until we see which is the 1st Codex out the gate.

I can deal with skipping PA in all honesty.
Just I want to get 'some' games in once lockdown ends, I'm certainly going to wait until the 9th edition rules are released. I would much rather there be a release schedule for the new codices, but being GW I know there's no point hoping for such a thing.
That said a new codex for the Tyranids could come out in 2 months, or almost 2 years knowing GW's historic release schedule outside of 3rd and 8th edition.

Well if you got the money spare why not get a codex for your army of choice.. Could try to wing it by using battle scribe maybe depending on the army.
Might be able to get a second hand one cheaper now that 9th is on the horizon people might be more likely to sell at a nice discount. I was going to get harlequins/DE books but im holding off now entirely.

The Maelstrom cards (and Open War cards, for that matter) will probably still work. I don't think GW will keep printing them though. I knew buying them was a mistake... Last time I ever buy a card/book from GW for 40K.
