As I'm sure we all do here, I regularly check Warhammer community for articles and updates about things. Today I got hit with an hCaptcha 'prove you aren't a robot' type thing which kind of surprised me. I haven't seen any other threads talking about this, how many other people have noticed it? They also acknowledged it in their 'necrons through the ages' article today:

We all know that Necrons have been around for millions of years, but did you know just how long the Necron Warrior has been around as a model for? Today, we’re taking a look back at its distant origins and how they have changed over the decades. If you’re a bit rusty, this is the perfect place to start and you don’t even have to pass a CAPTCHA to prove you’re not a Necron.

It's good to see gw taking steps to protect user privacy and security by having this in place, though choosing which is a bus or a train every time I want to check the site might get annoying

Im wondering if they implemented it in response to a DDOS/botnet type attack resulting from Arch and friends.

Ah, love the original Necron models (well, except the destroyers).

Soon my Necrons will have forces spanning 4 incarnations. Hopefully my destroyers will still be able to fly.

punitive action by some members of the community utilising repeated(automated x100000000000) requests for information from the website and basically overload the systems.
Those actions are apparently happening since GW went after ArchWarhammer and a few others for using their copyright/trademark to make money on youtube videos so arch removed the warhammer part of his name and some would take that retribution to extremes.

He also likely wasn't too happy with the WHC post on BLM given Arch is apparently pretty blatently racist

How can warhammer be made in to a trademark. That is as if some company trade marked the world wheel or bowl? Or are those people using GW art in their logos or something?

Context - you can call your tool company "Warhammer", but anything to do with gaming is a thin line...

In the same way that "Stormtrooper" can even though Stormtroopers were a historical unit in WW2. Trademark law depends on context.

If I make a historical WW2 wargame and I have a unit of "Stormtroopers" i will not violate any trademark.

If I make a space wargame and I have a unit of Stormtroopers who are space soldiers wearing white plate armor with molded frowny-face helmets, I'm violating the Star Wars trademark.

If you have a youtube channel called Arch Warhammer and your video content is trying to figure out which warhammer is the best warhammer at doing various things (Smashing, hammering in nails, crushing human skulls, breaking other warhammers, opening beers) you're not violating trademark.

If you have a youtubue channel called Arch Warhammer and your video content is extremely badly summarizing warhammer lore with a cringey fake british accent even though you're swedish or some gak and every video is about the warhammer universe trademarked by games workshop...yeah, your content is ABOUT their brand, and they have the ability to tell you whether you can or cannot use their name.

It's not an automatic violation, but it means that if they don't want you using their trademarked term or imagery, they can enforce that legally.

Also it's funny you say "Bowl" because "Superbowl" is so heavily trademarked that nobody except the TV channels that pay millions of dollars to show the superbowl are legally allowed to say that word on air.

They also implemented a limit to how many orders of indomitus the same person can have. So this could be to prevent scalpers from using bots to buy all the boxes up immediately on day 1.

Yup.

GW don’t want any association with him due to his political views. Hence asking him to drop their trademark from his name, lest someone feel its somehow an official endorsement.

Generic terms can be trademarked in the context of things that have nothing to do with the generic term. I.E. - if you were a blacksmith that produced Warhammers you probably would not be able to successfully trademark the word "Warhammer" as your brand name because that would be considered an anti-competitive attempt at monopolizing the lucrative trade in literal warhammers, BUT you could trademark the name "Warhammer" for a tabletop game because tabletop gaming really has nothing to do with actual warhammers and there is no confusion there.

BUUUUUTTTT if you were a blacksmith, even though you can't trademark "Warhammer", you CAN trademark "WarHAMR" or some variant stylization of the word "warhammer" that makes it distinct and recognizable and doesn't confuse the market, etc.

I've come across it twice, both times requiring a full two-step "select all the pictures with X in them" sections.

Ran a full virus scan of my PC afterwards as I wasn't sure why the hell Captcha would be on WarCom.

Now I want to start up a smithing business, selling bling warhammers branded WarHAMR...

Btw, is there some sort of similarity between those getting the capcha? Maybe they were getting a lot of requests from one particular region or something.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

If you're being asked to perform some task to prove you're a human (rather than just checking the box), it means it was unable to tell that from your recent browsing history and other behavioural cues (how you move the mouse pointer, your response times, typing speed, that sort of thing).

Often, it is because you're browsing in private mode, or otherwise have your browser security settings such that the information needed to convince Captcha you're a real person is not available to it.

Ah so it general donkey-cave stuff from western companies. My grandfather had problems with that, they did a new translation of Musahis book of the 5 rings. And all versions of the book always had joined rings as cover. And suddenly the MKOL came down hard on my grand dad, that they have rights to all depictions of 5 joined rings, they took him to court, and when he run out of money they still wanted to go on. Would have ended in jail, but he got sick, so it ended there. My dad still had to sell his parents house, because grand dad had it as a company building, like many people do.

I actualy suprised by this Arch dude to be honest. It is rather brazen to openly attack or entice the attacking of company sites, specialy in a western country. Here people wouldn't care much, as long as it is not costing the goverment money, but from where ever he is from I think he could be sent to jail for stuff like that.

Also what is wrong with his accent, he speaks like 2/3 english teachers I had in my life, I think I speak english in a similar way. We actualy get punished at school for trying to use american english, you can fail states exams for not using british english.

You have an extremely strange perception of what lands you in jail in "western countries", I'll just leave it at that.

In America, it is fairly common for certain subcultures of douchebags to put on fake british accents to try and make themselves sound smart and sophisticated. It always sounds like you're in a gakky community theater doing shakespeare, rather than speaking with an actual accent that you grew up with. Thankfully it seems to have died off in popularity, but when I watch anything with that dude I expect him to come in to camera wearing a trilby hat with a monocle and a few gears stuck onto it with his mom's borrowed hot-glue gun.

It isn't about american english vs british english. It's about british english and sounding like someone who grew up in Podunk Indiana who is trying to fake a british accent after watching a season of Dr. Who.

A guy from out town went to prison for throwing a ham sandwitch a mosque. And two guys were beaten to death by locals for just speaking polish and eating in public. Western countries are an insane mix of stuff to me, which I will never understand as every rules is contradictory and people never act or say what they mean.

As the english goes, I went two school in two different cities, and every teacher or lesson we watched had an accent similar to that this dude has. Although I must say, I watched like 3 min of him talking about D&D stuff, so I am not claiming he ain't going really annoying in his other videos, of which he seems to have a lot.

But to be honest, he is scandinavian maybe they talk british different. We had exchange students and trainers from mongolia once. They understood and read english, no problem. They just talked in a such a way we couldn't understand them . Oddly enough they understood us, but in the end we started just using russian for sake of simplicity.

I still don't get why the dude isn't roting in prison. Starting an attack on a company and forcing it to set up defence measures, would be more then enough here. The state would accuse him of terrorism and, or espionage and demend him to be extradited. Specialy if the company was an important one and had state interests in it.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.
