Just returning back to Warhammer 40k and I am considering starting an IG army.
I was always a big fan of the Tallarn , Valhallan and Steel Legion. However, all I see are Cadian and some other factions.

Where can I buy the other themes listed in the IG codex? Thanks!

They got cut to make room for more space marines.

Seriously GW moved away from metal models (since tin prices were rising dramatically) and they haven't released any new IG troops.

Hopefully they will given the age of the current kits, but who knows?

I prefer to buy from miniature manufacturers that *don't* support the overthrow of democracy.

eBay. And about every other year at the end of the year.

Cadians and Catachans were the only regiments in Plastic. The rest of the non-Forgeworld ones were in metal, which GW discontinued. You can still play the regiments, you just can't buy them from GW until they do a special Make To Order batch for one of them.

They did Vostroyan and Valhallan in recent years, so those will be easier to find.

Wow...that really sucks. Was really hoping to run all the other themes not out right now. They list them in the codex but nothing to play with. I do love the Death Korps from Forgeworld but DEAR LORD those prices are spendy!

So now we can do mostly Cadian (Star Ship Troopers) or Tempsetus (look like a cross between Killzone soldiers and the French Resistance)? Bummer.

IG is one of the easiest army to build if you don't mind some 3rd party parts to fit with original GW, and depending on what you plan to do with the army, like if you plan to attend tourneys or just gaming with casual friends.

Yeah, I'd definitely suggest 3rd party.

In addition to the links from Big Mac I'd say take a look at:

Anvil Industry does a lot of resin infantry with some really great build your own squad options
https://anvilindustry.co.uk/

Wargames Atlantic does plastic if that's your preferred medium

Thumbs up for Anvil. I returned to the hobby this year and I'm slowly repairing/repainting my old IG regiment (RT/1st ed). Anvil's stuff has been really useful.

Nothing prevents you from running Cadian models with the Tallarn subfaction rules. The datasheets don't distinguish. A guardsman is a guardsman.

On the webstore at least GW still stocks the base Steel Legion squad. Its a pretty limited set (grenade launcher, heavy weapon team, officer and 6 lasguns I think), but if you want the official models, some of them are still available at least to mix in with ebay rescues and 3rd party models.

I found a good compromise is to use cadians ans just swap the heads with third party stuff. At least in my region they are OK with that even in the GW store

Between the Genestealer cult, cadian, catachan, stormtrooper and all.the Necromunda kits and Mechanicus range, there is a huge range of base human kits from.GW that all work reasonably well.together. You can also mix and match in eldar and Tau bits to a certain extent.

If you dont like that range, then yes you can move on to the excellent and extensive 3rd party stuff.

That's not quite true. The Administratum recognizes specialist regiments and will try to route them to appropriate warzones for command to distribute where applicable(it's why Vraks was prosecuted by exclusively Krieg Siege regiments).

I have a feeling that the reason to why they added them was for the oldtimers who has an army of them, can still use them.
If they could GW would have taken the SM way with astra militarium(aka same visual models all over, just the colour that changed) as they are now called, when 8th was released.

You mean the fact that it's still an active warzone, with fighting going on in the shattered rubble of the planet?

Anyways, I don't get why people think all of the Cadians were on Cadia. They evacuated a big chunk when the planet was shattering. Not all the Regiments made it to the planet to fight on the surface either.

Mostly the Shattered planet part. Gotta be hard to recruit from a shattered planet where nobody is making babies anymore.

There are other planets in system and they evacuated plenty of civilians. Voidborn Imperial humans are a thing and we know regiments that are on campaign long enough are reinforced from children born and raised within the regiment's civilian hanger-ons and support staff. There's plenty of possibilities for future Cadians.

You know that Cadians weren't all born on Cadia, right?

It's a whole system of planets. That has been sending regiments into war for a loooooooooooong time. There's planets of their descendants that are close enough in disciplines and techniques that they are basically indistinguishable from the Cadians themselves.

Wwell, i know since at least 4th ed (when the pastic cadians were released), cadian pattern equipment was explicitly produced, copied and imitated by IG regiments all over the imperium, as it the Shock Troops were seen as the standard to which the rest were held.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

It's not as extreme as that.

Pure and simply put, it's that the models were not selling well anymore. They added the Aquila Strongpoint box for a couple of years and retired that - purely based on low sales.

The metal sisters were selling up until their update, and the metal Crusaders are still selling - albeit only online as a Webstore Exclusive, Preacher with Chainsword is another example.

When the sales of certain models drops below a threshold for a specified period of time, despite marketing, then they get retired.

I will not rest until the Tabletop Imperial Guard has been reduced to complete mediocrity. This is completely reflected in the lore.

I'm fairly sure that metal models who weren't compatible with the finecast process were retired as well.

We know that the KFF mek disappeared because the finecast version was causing too many customer complaints.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

The fact that the metal Guard offerings didn't age well, and there was a strong shift toward plastic among customers, had a lot to do with that. Combined with the periodic price hikes across the board, many who leaned toward Guard armies went third-party resin or plastic.

Because it will be very difficult to convince me that the Imperial Guard doesn't sell without hard numbers to prove it, based on the large fanbase and number of Guard armies I've seen built with both official models and third-party offerings. The Guard doesn't enjoy the mass market appeal of the Space Marines. But it is fairly popular, not to mention iconic.

If you don’t wish to go third party then your last option is to get creative with the necromunda kits and/or the gene stealer cultist kits. The only updated guard box is the storm troopers, nowadays called the militarum temptesus.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

So I expect that IG are up for the Army Revamp for 2021. Specifically, we've seen two brand new plastic releases for IG (Catachans) with the Plastic Colonel model that came out back in the spring, and the plastic Sgt. model releasing next week. I would expect that at a minimum there will be new Infantry kits that tripple as Conscripts/Infantry/Veterans for Both Chadians and Catachans, but possibly others like the ASL, Mordians, Tallarn and so on. I'm also expecting they'll redo HWT and SWT as well as the command squad kits. A lot of these kits could be dual or triple kits, which would allow for multiple "styles" for the various regiments. (You don't need to do a HWT and SWT kit in two seperate boxes, just combine them into one, 60$ price tag, done. Same with IF/VT/CS, all can be done from one kit) Likely the tanks and transports will stay the same and just get a box update, though it's possible we could see a new kit here or there. If they do anything to guard vehicles, I'd like to see them re scale the leman russ, it looks like a damned Tonka Truck, Characters like Strakken, Harker, Yarrick, and Creed could see the move to full plastic, alongside new heroes of the guard.

There are other options out there, Victoria miniatures comes to mind, having lots of different infantry styles...however having recently seen their miniatures up close, I'm not impressed with the quality vs. price many of their models look worse than the current plastic IG GW official models. Raging Heroes is another line I have seen guard players draw from, but their models are much more limited and suffer from being in resin (not a fan).

I think if you like to get a general impression of what is possible to kitbash together you might get some nice results browsing through the Dakka Gallery with search tags like "Imperial Guard", "Tallarn", "Mordian" etc. There are also a couple of users that tag the 3rd party company they used for conversions, so search tags like "Anvil" or "Victoria" might also be good for an impression of the quality.

If you want to stay within GW as Togusa wrote: If you are not that short on money there can be done a lot with mixing parts.
The Savlar Chemdog in the Codex for example is (I think) build from Cadian Command Squad legs and arms with Genestealer Neophyte hybrids Torso and head
The ventrillian noble looks like cadian legs and arms, Scion backpack and Torso and sword and heads from AoS free cities soldiers.
The indigian prefects seem to be made of some Kind of Genestealer legs and arms (?), Scion Torso and backpack and Adeptus Mechanicus Vanguard heads.

You are saying all Guard = All Kits.

Think of it this way: How many standard metal <regiment> Heavy Weapons teams sold? They were almost always more expensive than plastic to begin with. That's store space that isn't going anywhere. For the webshop, how often do you think people were buying lets say... Tallarn Missile Launcher Heavy Weapons Teams? Now how many were buying the plastic Cadian Heavy Weapons Teams, with various weapon choices, and around 20% cheaper? If they made plastic versions of the individual Regiments with customisation options, then they might have sold more.

Imperial Guard armies are expensive to begin with. When I look at the current GW site for Australia, the only metal squads on sale are the Steel Legion squads, and they are $60 versus the Cadian plastic squad at $54. In addition, the Steel Legion comes with a Missile Launcher and a Grenade Launcher - but what if you wanted 9 Lasguns instead? You can change the weapon options for the Cadians. That means you need to fork out another $60 for the Steel Legion - see where I'm going? It was never selling well, especially since the Blister packs disappeared - originally I could buy a metal squad + a blister pack of 3 basic troops to replace the special/heavy weapon included in the box.

I will not rest until the Tabletop Imperial Guard has been reduced to complete mediocrity. This is completely reflected in the lore.
