So I am in the process of considering a new army, which will mostly be a conversion project (though I plan to play them as well of course).

I have already done Orks, as they were my first attempts at conversion models (by far the easiest, was a good/fun place to start).

Things I'm considering -

Black Dragons - Probably salamanders, flamer units and meltas with bone blade arms. But as far as conversions go this is pretty simple (though the army may be good, if only because the only real options are flamestorm aggressors and eradicators, both of which are currently very strong as salamanders). Converting Brayarth into a big flame-belching behemoth could be a fun one.

Alternative Black Dragons - Use Space Wolves instead. Less flames, but thunderwolves into drake-riders could be interesting.

Tesla-Crons - Necrons using the new models, but going more steampunk tesla-coil clockwork with them. Probably been done before, but still.

Though I'm open to other ideas. I haven't yet made a flamer/melta army, but I'm not sure its very easy/possible to make a properly competitive army based on them. I currently play Harlequins, so full-melee on super fragile bodies isn't really where I want to go (I already have that) so a mixed melee/shooty army with some toughness behind it would be more my idea this time around.

Also considering going full-dreadnought statlines, maybe with Invictors as well (or if Necrons, I'd focus on the constructs). Not sure which army is currently best to aim at on this (especially with the new books coming out soon).

Edit:
I forgot, a third consideration I had was Deathwatch. I'm not sure -how- I would convert them yet, but the idea of deep-striking dreadnoughts intrigued me. I may have to put this one off until the codex though, as who knows if they'll keep that ability.

No to imperial guard. I rarely find them fun to play or paint, and I feel most of their good ideas have been done to death!

Samurai theme though... that could be interesting, if I go with katanas and naginata spears instead of chainsword/power weapons.... Though i'm not sure if Salamanders would be the best fit, as they don't really have any units that fit that. Space wolf nine-tails mounts though... or Akira bikers haha. Hmm.

If I was going with a samuraiu styled marine army, I'd actually proably go with silver templars.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Pick a codex you like the play style/rules for but not the miniatures. Invent your own xeno race and convert an entire army to represent them using rules from said codex. There are countless minor xeno empires out there, so it is actually quite in line with the fluff.

Or pick a xeno race from some 40k art that is not represented in miniature form.

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

Do you have any suggestions? I know a few of the 'lesser known races' but mostly they wouldn't work as anything much except tyranids (things like the Megarachnids)

How do you feel about Tyranids? ...it just so happens I had an idea myself earlier tonight - Giger-themed, Xenomorph-esque Nids.
Smooth off the heads and all those ridges, matt black chitin paint job with gloss on the head for that shininess, add some water effects for some gloopy dribbles here and there.

I used to have nids back in 4th edition, but i found them a bit too one dimensional (though theyre improved now). Id probably do them as megarachnids though. I wanted to do something more technological this time (though i did consider doing mech-nids...)

My own conversion plans are currently on hold as I need to do "occupational therapy" for my wrist, so I don't really care if someone beats me to it:

Using mostly Dark Eldar bits, with the Viper and Reaver helmeted heads and Craftworld Eldar weapons, make Craftworld Eldar models based on the Vodyani from Endless Space 2. Make the armor a bit metallic, and paint the helmets and any skin as though they're glass, and paint a fire/glow inside of them.

I was planning on doing just a Kill Team, but you're free to take this idea in any direction you want.

Ooh... interesting. I can see those being very good for Wraith models for sure. (and I generally prefer wraiths to other eldar infantry).

My ongoing project (that will continue to be ongoing for my eldar) is a kind of 'Exodite' force, but mostly it's their vehicles being a bit more "natural grown wraithbone" with the shapes and such. But I hadn't done any wraith yet, and I may well have to go that route with them, that looks cool.

I had really good fun making a Starcraft themed Deathwing force. Need to finish it off at some point, but kids happened. I also had a go at a Mass Effect squad but that was really hard and kind of ground to a halt.

What is your favourite sci fi or fantasy background and where could it lead?

From your list so far I like the space wolf idea most as it leads to interesting cavalry.

GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"

When I saw the new Necron art that has the Silent King floating in the background like a star, assorted noble Necrons lined along a path, and a vast army of Necron Warriors laid out before them doing the arms-crossed kneel, like the models on the Ghost Arc, my brain immediately went:

"Wakanda forever!"

And now I kind of want to do up a Wakanda-themed Necron force. Praetorians with armored staffs? Brides of the Black Panther, with the shaved heads and the bright red attire. Plamancers? Given the purple robes of Wakandan priests. The new melee Destroyers? Base them off of the White Horilla tribe.

You get to use a vibrant array of color for each grouping, but all around the core Afrofuurism vibe. Less Egypt, more Africa as a whole.

No idea if it'd work, but.

The other idea that sprang to mind recently was using Necromunda/Warcry gangs as the basis for a large scale counts-as. For technological, you could mix up a Tau force by "anime"-ing up some battlesuits to look even more like mecha, and using Van Saar for the foot troops. Maybe the odd Delaque thrown in for Ethereals.

Dark Mechanicus using Skaven Stormvermin and Skitarii arms/bits. Or Plague Monks.

Sure you can fit a lot of Warpstone tech in there too. They seem a natural fit -lots of glowing tubes, bottles of bubbling liquid and ominous copper vats bolted to things.

And Chaos too. Lots of Chaos bits.

Did some test models a while back that looked great, but messed up with a bad can of primer. You will need to fill the stormvermin arm sockets, and shave down the front of the hood to accommodate the arms.

A single box of Skitarii has enough arms to cover a box of 20 stormvermin, though you may need to find backpacks and the like from elsewhere.

Cheap guitar strings for all the cabling.

Been on my radar for a while, but never got round to it.

My favorite is probably firefly, which I've already considered but there is (as far as I can find) no scary gunslinger characters in the game lol. Haven't even found one powerful pistol relic. No good shotguns either. I think deathwatch is the only one with a shotgun and it seems bad (if only it could use SIA). Possibly would work as a kill team though.

Star wars has been done a lot, not sure I could really improve on that. A lot of my other faves wouldn't work in this setting.

Dune for genestealer cults perhaps. Would have to be tyranids for a sand worm haha.

I've been dreaming of Black Dragons for quite simetime now, but in the end I'm fine with my normal salamanders.

I'll tell you the two projects I think I will not be able to say no in the future:

- Samurai tau, resting suits under cherry trees blowing in the wind;

- Doom chaos, angry angry killing demon machines.

I just need to finish my other projects... eventually.

If it was possible to make a melee-battlesuit build in tau I probably would make an anime samurai tau army. Unfortunately don't think it's even possible.

Current ideas:

Samurai Eldar army - jetbikes and tanks given cloth 'sails' and flags, wraiths with samurai swords.

Sisters of Battle - where the Emperor is the Warp God of the sisters. So Celestine is basically a daemon prince, and the Exorcist would be converted into a walker-tank (pseudo daemon engine).

Deathwatch... Likely I'd do them the same as the sisters idea, except with more frag cannons. I may even combine sisters and deathwatch, even if deathwatch is a hindrance. (Would love for someone to come up with another cool Deathwatch conversion plan though)
