I dont have a pile of shame. What I do have is a hobby with multiple on-going projects within it. I'll work on different projects on different days at varying paces.

Current projects are:
AoS - a small DoK force. Have to build 1 more Bloodwrack shrine & 10 harpies (whatever they call now). Then painting.
AoS - I picked up the new mega gargant kit this evening. Build & paint.
40k - currently building about 1k pts worth of GSC. Painting to follow.
40k - the Primaris half of the Indom box + their Mario kart. Building & painting
●Flames of War - between all the different eras (WWI-WWIII) i have 14 armies. Each has a full+ force finished, but I have a # of extra/alt/auxiliary units for each that need finished beyond just their basic min paint jobs. You know - detailing, washes, weathering, unit markings, etc.
●Flames of War - i have a pair of A10 Warthogs that need building. Then painting.
●Bolt Action - theres about 15 misc Germans that need painted up & added to squads.
●Black Seas - the thread rigging project continues! I'm down to about 12 ships to finish & then ill never touch thread again. Its like building 40k drop pods - except even more tedious..... fortunately not actually required, but the ships look SO much better once its done.
●D&D/RPGs - there's several hundred misc/cool figures to paint up. Generally I paint something from this group if I'm going to be using it for an extended period or for some big set piece encounter. Otherwise it's just as the whim stikes.

It's bad- but less bad after I sold all my 40k stuff a few months ago. Still more than I can realistically handle, but just enough that I can't let any more of it go.

I have a different problem. I have already painted everything I had for Warmachine and WH40K and don't want to buy any more, because I rarely play anyway.

I was hoping to paint Black Rose Wars, but I didn't like the game so I am selling it.

I was also looking for another wargame to enter, but none of my friends were interested in the ones that looked interesting to me. And communities of those niche games are close to non-existant here.

I'd like to paint something again (my pile disappeared during the first few months of lockdown in spring) but I have little motivation to paint things that will find no tabletop use.

Behold - the cupboard of shame!

I currently have a shelving unit of shame (although mostly aircraft plastic kits) with a pile of shame atop the shelves.

I'm kind of in a similar situation but am viewing it as an opportunity to try and get stuff finished off and painted - thinking of (fingers crossed) spring next year as a loose deadline for when things might start to return to some semblance of normality.

I'm in pretty good shape right now. There's 40 skink skirmishers, 50ish Saurus warriors, a handful of Temple Guard, 3 Terradons, 6 Ripperdactyls, 3 Salamander conversions and 4 Razordon conversions waiting... along with six stegadon conversions, one troglodon conversion, and four carnosaur conversions.

There's also a literal handful of one-off minis just for the heck of it, not as part of any armies.

I need to get some Saurus cavalry one of these days, but I might wait a bit longer so I can whittle down the waiting list a bit more.

Same as some other posters, counting the pile in individual models is just not feasible. I paint 200-ish minis in an average year, but I am also very good at buying

Terrain - just bought about 1000$ of terrain for a 40k city fight board, also got some buildings leftover from my post-apoc terrain

Flames of war - US and german mid/late armies

Team Yankee - Soviet VDV army

Fantasy - Tomb kings chariot army, Tomb kings constructs army, huge skaven skyre army, chaos troll army + various leftovers of Norsca army, Empire panzer engineers army, Empire peoples crusade army, Empire Ostermark army, Kislev army reinforcements, Dogs of war Myrmida company army

40k - Cadian 122nd army, Krieg platoon, Renegade militia army, various imperial support

Various - monsters and heroes for rangers of shadow deep / RPG, various leftover fallout, walking dead

This year I have at least gotten everything organized by project in see-through boxes, so much easier to have control of my projects. I notified my wife that if I should pass suddenly, she has a savings account in my pile of shame.

I've gotten pretty good about not buying more things unless I'm painting them right away. Like I've got a couple ASoIaF armies on my paint table I just bought so not really shame.

Of the.... bought too much years ago and never painted it pile.... sheesh.... so much shame:

GW stuff I have mostly under control. The big box sets are my big problem. A couple knights from Renegade, Indomitus some of the sisters stuff. Also a bunch of Underworlds warbands from when I felt compelled to complete Shadespire for no good reason.

PP is my white whale from when I played one game exclusively and bought too many armies. I've got a pile of Trolls and Pikemen I need to such up and paint.

I have a bizarre surplus of Malifaux stuff somehow for such a small game. Two big crews I need to make time for, but always another project....

The real shame is all the little things I've picked up probably to complete some pointless collection that I've never played and probably never will. I've got piles of Godtear, Relic Knights, some Batman and Infinity stuff that's ancient, a Brewers team.

I've gotten really good about keeping up with games I've "completed". I buy new things, I paint new things, they're back to done. Most of my shame is from stuff I bought before I got a handle on it, which is getting.... pretty ancient by now.

Oh, that one hit too close to home for me.

I'd gotten things down a good bit, so I decided to celebrate and bought a bunch more...

1 - About 20-25 new D&D minis (I've given up on the metals that stretch back to Ral Partha days)
2 - 40K Eldar army (been waiting until I feel my skill is up to it; still don't think I'm ready after almost 30 years of having them - metal at that).
2.5 - A handful of 40K models - Admech Onager, 4 IG Chimera/Wolverine (by Archon) transports, Tau drones/bits, some old Space Marine squads and my son's Orc Army (halfway done for a 1000 pt. force)
3 - 2 squads modern soldiers (US) & FAV support vehicle
4 - Team Yankee US force, West German & Soviet (enemy) force; Flames of War American & German army
5 - Half-painted WHFB/AoS Seraphim army (needs basing & painting the big lizards/vehicles)
6 - WHFB/AoS Elf army (bought just before End Times...)
7 - Blood & Plunder English buccaneer mob & cannons for a Sloop, Frigate & Brigandine (the ships themselves have been painted and rigged, no sails though)
8 - Runewars Human army & Elf army
9 - German & US Dust army
10 - Warmachine Cygnar army & starter Khador army
11 - 6 sets of Kazumi temple terrain from Archon (about 1/4 painted)
12 - 2 complete pledge sets of Dungeons & Lasers space terrain (for an Aliens game)
13 - Sector Mechanicus terrain (enough for a 6X4 ft. board)

Even with as much painting I've gotten done in 2018-2020, I suspect I'm looking at least another 5 years worth of painting to do with what I have right now

And I just recently bought a resin printer

It never ends well

It would take a long time to remember them all, and a longer time to list them. In summary and approximately:
250 infantry
30 large infantry / small monsters
30 mounted / bike models
10 small vehicles
20 tank / aircraft sized vehicles

Oh yeah, and about 10-15kg of various terrain

I reckon I've only built / converted about 10% of what I've bought in the 6 years I've been back hobbying. Even with the excuse that I do a lot of converting, it's still pretty attrocious progress!

In 28mm, we can start with my various Perry Historical Boxes:
American Civil War Confederate Infantry
American Civil War Cavalry
British Zulu War Infantry
French Napoleonic War Elite Companies
British WW2 Desert Rats

Also a box of Warlord Games' Pike & Shotte Infantry.

The above are all going to be converted one way or another, either for a 19th century ImagiNations campaign (being based for Black Powder), or Very British Civil War (using Bolt Action).

An entire Mantic Games Orc Army I picked up, still on the sprue, on Ebay for a song, plus dozens of GW's Lord of the Rings SBG Orcs & Uruk-hai, plus Elves, Gondorians, and Rohirrim. Also, a few Mantic Scarecrows that need painting up to fill out my fledgling Undead force for Warlords of Erehwon.

The vast bulk left in my 28mm Pile of Shame is a massed variety of GW 40k miniatures, mostly Space Marines & Chaos Space Marines, that need selling off.

Going into smaller scales, I have 2 very small armies in 10mm for ImagiNations gaming that require painting. I also have a host of 2mm scenery that needs doing up, for campaign games, naval wargaming & such. Interspersed between these is my naval wargaming collection - a couple of Frigates from Black Seas, Prussian & FSA fleets for Dystopian Wars, and an Orc fleet (I think) from Uncharted Seas. All of these are either in need of painting, or stripping & repainting.

---

I did tell myself I was going to paint my entire collection this year, but in spite of Covid & lockdown, personal circumstances dictated that such did not happen, and I ended up buying far more than I painted. However, this means I now have 2 months to knuckle down and make a dent before hitting the ground running in 2021!

Many and varied forces in progress according to waxing & waning whims.

I may never finish an army in my life.

For me the one I feel most guilty about is my huge Mantic Basilean army from their KS many years ago. The gorilla MAA arms put me off so much I just left them all in the box. However, recently I have found perfect replacement arms for swords, spears and shields and printed them on my resin printer and I am not excited about the army again!

My other is all of Bones 4 core set - but those fulfill a different purpose and the odd one here and there will get pulled and painted.

Not too bad, but certainly something! I have plenty of spare parts and bodies I could make more marines if I wanted as well.

If "pile of shame" means unfinished models I've got at least

• ~2500 pts worth of marine stuff
• 500-1000 points worth of T'au & Kroot
• Most of my terrain
• Space Hulk boardgame minis
BSF minis

Now if it means stuff that's still on sprue, that is considerably less; mostly some Primaris & FW stuff. I like to assemble everything almost as soon as I get it, in order to get them onto the tabletop ASAP.

Well, confession time. Off the top of my head and at a rough guess:

- 30k Alpha Legion - about 1,500-2,000pts worth of unpainted tanks and infantry
- 30k Solar Auxilia - full army awaiting paint - probably near 100-150 models and tanks in all
- 30k Dark Angels - About 1,500pts unpainted
- 100 Necromunda models, approx
- Near complete collection of 1st and 2nd edition Epic - 99% upainted, probably around 1,500 models
- Barons War from Footsore - probably about 150 models
- Darklands - Atalantes, Jutes, Erainn and assorted models - probably around 200 models in various sizes
- 5 Titans left for Adeptus Titanicus along with 10 Knights
- 10 planes left for Aeronautica
- Frostgrave - 50 models worth including terrain
- Rangers of Shadow Deep - got enough models and terrain for the main rulebook scenarios but mostly unpainted
- Original Warhammer Quest and all expansions - mostly unpainted
- Oldhammer Rogue Trader Imperial Guard - 200 models
- Oldhammer Warhammer fantasy - 150 to 200 models
- Stargrave (upcoming) - includes a mix of Sedition Wars and other models - probably about 30 models in total
- Legends of the Old West - posse of 6 fighters!

This generally doesn't include terrain. Good news is my purchases have gone right down.

When I got back into painting and the like (haven't really had much opportunity to play) I went a little overboard with purchasing unpainted stuff second hand, so there are several large boxes full in my basement (I don't want to do modelling in the living area because of the mess, but do have a painting station).

Not counting my very old Epic stuff, and including GW games as well as board games with minis (Zombicide, Descent, and quite a few "plastic tons" Kickstarter...) I have around 5000 models to paint, ranging from very small (like stuff for SW Rebellion) to quite large (Joan of Arc Dragon, many Adeptus Titanicus Titans...). I do better with building than painting, but I've gathered quite the backlog over the last few months in anticipation of Brexit (including 2 Necron army boxes and numerous Warcry warbands).

My resolution for this year is to have a laser focus on AT, building first (I assembled 25 Titans over the last few weeks, but have 6 Titans and dozens of Knights left) and painting afterward. I'll do a couple of Board games base boxes if I have any time left.

A lot of small projects, but the big one? Tons of sprue. I hold onto it and have used it in the past for everything from reposing&scaling up minis, to outright scratchbuilding a tank with it.

I'm currently working on a Chaos Dwarf army, and got a Kataphron box to turn the treads into small Dwarf Tanks. When I cut up and piled one of the three sleeves of sprue, there was about a Rhino's mass worth of plastic. And there are three of those things. And I have a large backlog that I am still saving for the "scratchbuild monsters" pile.

Speaking of scratchbuild monsters, one of my old pet project ideas was to go through all the small monster entries from Monstrous Arcanum & Storm of Magic, in order to scratchbuild them as a pet project of a sorts. Then the assorted monsters/random encounters from Mordheim (and Border Town Burning).

It's madness, I tell you.

Years worth. It's a constant struggle but I think I've kicked the "Starting a new army" obsession. What is it that makes starting a new one more exciting than the projects you have?

I still find myself daydreaming about new things but I've gotten much better at stopping and realizing there's a reason I have the ones I do and keep chipping away.

Last year was a huge success almost completely worked from the pile of opportunity. 2 models purchased 115 painted.
