What is the company veteran squad? As a SW player I have never seen it before. Is this where the apothecary, champion and banner bearer used to be? What is this wear bodyguard ability? And how come one of them can take a heavy weapon? Are there other such weard units in the codex, relics from old?

It used to be called a command squad or honour guard in ba and featured the company veterans company champion and apothecary which have now been split to different units

I am not sure what your bodyguard question means

And by relics you mean old school marines that have been around for years then yes

Yup. When all the apothecary, ancient, champion, etc. are removed from the command squad of old, these are the guys who remain. The bodyguard rule is there to reflect their traditional role of hanging out and protecting HQs.

I can't remember, but at one point wasn't the Techmarine part of that group too? (5th ed or earlier maybe?)

I know back in third he was. Not sure when he was dropped.

Edit:
Just looked. In 4th, they were a separate elite pick. It was 3rd, and only 3rd.

Where they were part of one of the best box sets ever made.

Note that the 3rd edition. Command Squad box wasn't actually a legal unit...

It used to be the command squad you're talking about and they've reintroduced that notion somewhat now in that if you take a veteran squad then you can take an apothecary, champion, and banner without taking up additional elite slots. The veterans themselves prevent your characters being targeted which is pretty nice for a fairly cheap unit.

I was also shocked that this could be a 2 marine squad to essentially give your leader 4 ekstra wounds. Of course you can already screen characters, but airplanes like dakkajets are good for sniping leaders. Good unit to fill out transports with long fangs in them etc. A very odd unit.

It is ann odd combination or vanguard and stern guard marines. (or SW wolf guards, except the heavy weapon)

I am just finding this very odd.

They predate the split of veteran squads into stern/vet. They have always been a very flexible unit.

Yeah but back in fifth edition the special weapons where priced very wildly. When they are reasonable priced they are much more interesting.
