Don't really enjoy painting either, but want the visual spectacle on the table, and can't afford to pay someone else to paint (other than a character model or two).

Did not like painting my Blood Angels, as I was doing the 2nd ed. scheme which was red with black trim, and every time I'd mess up with the black I'd have to get out the white paint, paint over the mistake, and repaint the red. A royal pain in the .

Necrons. Made up my own dynasty, the Duracell dynasty, so copper, black and the neon green of the flayer tube to represent the power tester that used to come standard on Duracell battery packs. Neutral, not that painful to paint, but not that interesting.

Getting into Kill Team, I chose Deathwatch. What I enjoyed about it was selecting and painting the Chapter shoulder pads. When possible I've tried to go for lesser known chapters for variety's sake. I'll have all the Loyalist chapters as well (they came in Kill Team Cassius, and are integral to those figures). Also, the basic black and silver looks good and is not that difficult to paint. So the scheme is simple, but variety & visual interest is provided by the pads.

Also for Kill Team, I bought AdMech, and like Arcanis161 above, am not going to get anymore now that I have the KT. My reasons are similar; too fiddly to paint with all those doohickeys on them. Also uses red & black like the Blood Angels, so do not enjoy.

While I have IG figures, since the ones I painted were from The Last Chancers, they are essentially character models, not an uniform look one can try to churn out.

I bought the Space Marine Heroes 3 series for Kill Team, and at the moment look forward to painting them, but reading the back & forth above about painting Death Guard makes me wonder how I'll find it in practice.

While not 40K, I am mostly enjoying painting my Stormcast Eternals for Warcry. Army Painter Platemail metal primer, add detail colors, then Talassar Blue Contrast over the silver for Celestial Vindicator turquoise. (My current painting projects are all Warcry, not Kill Team.)

Tyranids: I'll never understand why people say that painting Nids is easy. To me, it was the hardest, and I sold my collection because I could never get them right. I think people say this because they just slap on washes or contrast paint. While that makes them look decent, to me you need a Leviathan like theme really to make them pop. However, whenever I tried to put washes in recesses it just looked terrible, and I couldn't blend them well with the skin. And I could not for the life of me get anything convincing with the caparace stripes. I must have painted and pliunged them in the isopropyl three times for 4000pts worth until I got frustrated and gave up!

Really? B.c you can paint them in a couple minutes. Just b.c you want a well above table top quality miniature doesn't mean its not easy for everyone that wants table top quality. Thats like saying "I don't understand people using a metallic paint when I rather paint NMM to make it pop more".

I get where TonyH122 is coming from. I also get where you are coming from. It can take only a couple minutes to paint up nids, and they'll look a LOT better than most any other model only given that amount of time. However, when I was painting my Tyranid kill team to try and match the same quality as pretty much everything else I painted, it felt like to me it took extra work. And I still don't think they look as good (I think they look bad) as a number of other things I had already painted. I can edit in photos if you want, or you can view my signature line.

I think it comes down to a painter's general style. I think I do well with space marines and metallic heavy armor with my clean painting style. That style doesn't transfer over to organic bits nearly as well since I don't make use of washes except largely for shadowing/detail and use very little dry brushing. However, I could just as easily see another painter that uses inks, washes or even contrast paints heavily along with a number of dry brushing techniques finding something like nids a joy to paint.

I have painted just at least one about every faction's plastic Troops choice at this point. For me, I think it is probably a toss-up between Genestealers/gants/guants and regular Guardsmen as to my least favorite to paint. And the Guardsmen is almost entirely due to be old, heroic scaled models which just don't match up with GW's more modern human proportions. Where is the nids just don't work well with how paint miniatures. I am certain in both cases my paint scheme (both pretty dark) had at least something to do with it.

I've painted 15k points of nids, I find it very easy and fun. I have done high and low quality. The large openess of them makes for a lot of fun ideas you can do, its like a open canvas with easy lines to follow. I even did Undead nids for a old 5th Combat Patrol tournament, sadly only kept 1 model. See attachment.

Maybe its b.c i have been paintig for 20yrs and have painting 50k points over that time from many different armies, units, and games. But for me the models that needed to be very clean are the ones that I hated to paint the most.

DG for me. Not quite as liberating as in the days where the models weren't obscenely packed with detail, but there's still something therapeutic about painting Nurgle. Also lets me do things in a completely different style to my other armies.

Probably nids for me. Toss the codex and rule book out of the window, there's so much possibility with them and the opportunity for an easy conversion with spare parts is unbelievable.

Orks, My primary and largest army by far, over 200 boys, Stompa, 'Nauts, planes, buggies bikes, stormboyz, MANZ the lot. I painted the boys and grots for a tournament over 10 years ago in the space of about a month, that sucked balls.
However, all the vehicles, walkers, elites and characters, especially my Wierdboy, painboy, Warbosses and new Ghaz were all my favourites by far. I even enjoyed the Flashgitz and ammo runts. So much variety in colour schemes and opportunity to be creative.

AdMech. Like the army, loathe painting it. Soooo much fiddly detail, I have an allied Knight and Warglaives which I really enjoyed. Nice to spend some time on matching heraldry and details.

GSC. I quite enjoyed these, although TBF I've only got 1500 ish points worth so it's mostly cool characters.

Nurgle Daemons. I quite enjoyed these, straightforward and gross, lots of pus and slime. I also tried new techniques with these guys, base of white and then layers of washes. It worked well. I'm definitely getting more of these.

I have just picked up a Tau army for pennies, all now stripped and repaired I'm looking forward to getting my airbrush in the near future and getting some digi-cam down. Not an army I think I'll play, but I'm wierdly looking forward to painting it.

I have painted many good-sized armies:
Space Marines, Drukhari, Tyranids, Orks, Sisters of Battle, Imperial Guard, Eldar, Chaos Marines, and am currently painting elements of my friend's Necron army. They all have their ups and downs, and I prefer converting and building to painting.

Having said that, probably the most satisfying were the Chaos Marines due to a cracked armor effect on the troops and vehicles.

Orks are fun because I like the gritty grungy look.

For me it has to be the Death Guard, as I've painted two armies of them (first one in the late 90's, second last year).

Next might be Iron Warriors and 40k Orks, then Skaventide for AoS. I've completed all of these in 2019-2020, each one taking around three months of work (with loads of converting involved).

The first armies I ever managed to finish were Dark Elves and Undead in the late 90's. Very warm memories of both projects. Was unbelievably nice feeling to have an army completely painted.

So pretty much dark & dirty things seem to be the most fun!

I don't personally think so, but many find them very fun to paint. They have too much detail for me, but their cloth/capes are large enough to have designs on them.

I'm also on team "great models, a pain in the ass to paint".

The 40k army I've had the most fun painting was my Drukhari. Lots of possibilities: they don't have "assigned" colors and they don't use camouflage. I'm also very satisfied with the black, dark pink and dark blue scheme I came up with for them.

Orks are always fun to paint. My go-to color scheme for them was inspired by the movie "Waterworld", and I made it look like they had stitched their clothes together from shammies.

What's good about them? Easyish to paint. Also, there is no need for uniformity. Get a detail wrong between units? who cares? get bored of doing the same paint scheme over and over? Change it up, they are Orks that don't do conformity.

I'm going to throw out one that hasn't been mentioned yet: I had more fun painting my Slanneshi Daemons than anything else I've done.

A big chunk of that came from Bubblegum Pink skin with Wistera purple armor being both a difficult set of colors to work with and producing an end result like something out of a hentai from the 90' so there was a constant giggling sense of "I can't believe I'm actually trying this" while I was working on them (which may reflect poorly on me as a person) but they're also really pretty models.

The only thing holding me back on them is the fact that most of their schemes are light colors, which suck, and metallics, which are boring.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Most fun? Hmm, that would be a painting style which takes the least amount of time. So for me this would be drybrushing.

SM WERE the most tedious to paint because back in the day there were no pauldrons with chapter symbols. So you had to paint the symbol on your own which was time consuming and therefore pretty frustrating.

Yes, there were paper symbols too but they didn't help you when creating your own chapter. In addition, those paper symbols didn't look all too well once applied.

No one is preventing you from painting them in the way you want. Mine got a green paint job to go along with my Catachans.

Necrons are probably easiest to paint.
But if you consider (green, glowing) details to paint, it will be not that easy.

Fun is too relative a term to make any solid declarations as "most fun".

Some like a lot of little doodads and geegaws on the model to pop out with their painting.

Some like intricate details like baroque trim of regular Chaos Marines.

For some it is just an activity to get a zen going, so little things like doodads and trim could prove to be a frustration.

So it is all you to decide what is fun and why, then pursue that.

I've been having a lot of fun painting Nurgle Daemons recently. Though all the boils and so on can get tedious!

Aside from that, I think basic space marines are pretty fun to paint. Bold colours, simple schemes. There's a reason they are so successful.

I think some of the stuff that looks the coolest, like rag tag mobs of cultists and stuff, can often be a bit of a pain to paint.

I've just started building an AOS Nurgle army and after Orks. they have been the most fun to paint. I leave all the pus filled boils till the end, I find it weirdly satisfying to paint them.

Why is painting skin a problem for you? Usually I just do a base color + flesh wash, done.
