Well done to those getting their entries in, some really lovely stuff here and great to see everyone testing their mettle on some new tools and techniques. Looking forward to the voting!

Some awesome work here, great to see so many pushing themselves with new techniques. That didn't happen here, I didn't have much painting enthusiasm this month (these wouldn't even have been done without the painting challenge), so I've just done some dwarf infantry. The new comes from new to me miniature range (North Star) and finally getting around to using the snow basing material that I've had for ages but never used

Done, even before midnight, for once
Re: New Tricks, that's my first foray into Warcry (which was fun!). I tried to make them look a bit more industrial and eerie to emphasize the weird diving suit design, rather than the original "Khorne with unhealthy skin" scheme.
I tried out some technical paints like Citadel blood and various Vallejo weathering gunk (mostly on the bases) and some washes, but somehow the minis (or my paint scheme) weren't that ideal for trying out inks as most surfaces turned out to be some kind of dull metal armour :| Well, next time ...

Sorry I'll need to bow out. Unfortunately time got away from me this month. Good luck to all of you and thanks for the kind words of encouragement.

Decided to change my entry line up as I got the minis finished in time.

New trick - All painted using wet blending ... mostly

First month of 2021 and already plenty of awesome entries.

This was quite an experience, oils make blending a cakewalk but you have to tackle them very differently and need some time to get the hang of them.
About 80% of the figure was done with oils, armor, cape, blade, pants, tabart and the face (except the eyes) all oils.
There is still a lot to learn for but I'm very fond of them.

Excuse me while I go and blow my brains out... What oils are you using? Abteilung? I need more practice using oils. Need to start using cardboard to sap some of the oil out as mine often end up too wet.

Hehe...Yes, Abteilung and Rembrandt from Royal Talens. I don't use them fresh I always put them on cardboard first and leave them for 6-8 hours at least.
They are good for a few days. Also I thin them quite a lot.

Yeah that's my problem. I need to do a proper project with them and do it properly. At the minute I mainly use them for glazing highlights or shadows.

Final pic, probably have to click through for larger (full size just eats the screen):

First peices of my Norse force for Saga, also finally broke out the snow flock I've been planning to use on this warband and my kinda stalled Rus warband. Vague gesture in the direction of NMM on the axes, but too half-gak to really count as an attempt I think.

Hi All

I'm still struggling with having to balance Work and Childcare during the lockdown (and now moving house as well) so hobby time has been very limited.

I've managed another simple one but something I always wanted to try, magnetizing a model. (did the hands, arms and head)

Here is the WIP

Here are my final pics of Rakkir from the board game Judgement.

I painted him with oils. As you have to do with oils, I basecoated everything with acrylics, and then blended on top of them with the oils. Essentially, all the paint you can see here is oil paint. I even did the eyes with oils, which was difficult more because of the state of my crappy synthetic brushes by that time than the unsuitability of the paints. I'd never used oil paints before for anything, apart from a single art project at school, more than twenty years ago, so it was definitely a voyage into the unknown. I kind of want to paint everything with oils now.

Aaahrg! Stahp with the amazing oil entries please, these are just too cool ... so tempting to clutter my 'home office' with even more art supplies ...

It's a shame you won't be able to finish, but there's always next time. Also, you should start a P&M blog so everyone can follow your progress.

Now showing Catachan Jungle Fighters and World War zombies!

New thread is up!

https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/795825.page

Unless anyone needs more time, I’m going to call this one closed. That said, there is no way I’m going to get to sorting it out until after work today, so if something shows up in the next 8 hours, that’s fine.

I know we say this every month, but amazing work from everyone! Truly this month more than most. One of the primary goals of this competition is to build community where people help each other, and push their bounds as painters. This has been on display in high form from everyone.

Thanks @JoshinJapan I've been considering doing somthing like that for a little while but I find I paint occasionally at best and sometimes just can't face it for months at a time so I'm not sure if it's worth it.

As for this month? some of the work looks fantastic. Keep up the great work everyone as you constantly inspire me and others to keep trying.

Nah, it’s a fair question. I said It would be up at the start of the week, but I’m a filthy liar. Instead of just hammering out all the work in one block, I’ve been spreading it out. I -think- the OP should be all updated and ready to go, it just needs to be proofread and the poll put together. I’ll do it over my Saturday morning coffee. Which, as we all know, is the best time to error check stuff.

This week was the major crunch week for me buying a house. I *should* be past the worst of it, but needed to juggle a lot of calls and paperwork. Which ate a chunk of my freetime, and jacked my stress level something fierce. But the die has been cast, and nothing to do now but wait for things to churn through the process.
