QAR - As always your models inspire me. Fantastic blends, smooth NMM all around fantastic work.
Maxin - Bravo. One of the best Ghaz I've seen and I screw around on insta a lot. Love the chrome work... the heated gun... the face all of it. Props dude.
Modock - I love your work as always! NMM on this is impressive beyond words. As underrated as it may be, your chainmail is perfect. Not an easy task that...
DV8 - Fantastic blends, great work on the freehand...
Chris56 - Love those skin tones dude! nicely blended.

Incorporating Wet-Blending

Once again, lots of outstanding work this month. You all inspire me to do better and try new things.
Nevelon: Nice, smooth bone colors on those banshees-- it's hard for me to believe you did it with Contrast paints. I also like the red hair-- it stands out nicely against the off-white without being garish.
kb_lock: The Force weapon is great-- I can never seem to highlight gold-- and I also like the swirly power weapon and reflected light on the cape.
Rybrook: Cal Jericho's bright green coat stands out well next to the grimy clothes his sidekick wears.
queen-annes-revenge: Once again, some inspirational NMM. I like how the highlights on the skin aligns with the highlights on the clothes-- I don't usually put that much thought into light, but I think I might try to from now on.
Viterbi: You did a fine job on Baron Zemo' hood-- pink is a hard color to pull off, especially when everything is so much more naturalistic.
E3DD: You did some fine blending on all the purple-- I particularly like the pink/purple shading on the archer. I think the models would benefit from brighter highlights, though.
Zergsmasher: You're risking a civil war by adding Space Wolves to your collection, aren't you? The greys are nice and smooth, and will look great on the tabletop.
Captain Brown: You have a different, but equally lovely, take on the green coat. I really like the two-tone hair on Cal.
Tyranid Horde: The turquoise spot colors contrast nicely with the purple. I like the blending on the eye shield, as well.
inmygravenimage: The yellow lighting effect on the Harbinger is jarring and eye-catching. I wouldn't have thought to do that.
Jamie Shred: Good work on the variant skin tones. The highlights on the red blood are quite excellent-- I thought they were reflected light rather than painted on.
me: Restic remains a frustrating material to work with, and I wish I had known how transparent Warpaints pink was before I started. It's nice to have another team ready to field, though!
Freya: I like how the legs and flanks of this model are darker than the arms and face-- you show far more awareness of light than I do.
Yorkright: I see that you figured out the highlighting on the shield-- that's hard to do with metallics.
maxwin: The NMM is great, of course, but I'm even more impressed by the smoke. I'm not even sure how you did that.
MobileSuitRandom: I love the cloak-- it really looks like it should be on a Yes or King Crimson album cover.
Maharg: The smooth orky skintones look great against all the wear and tear on the equipment. It must have been a long, patience-trying job to paint all those rusty spots.
Turaxa: Kudos for attempting the diamond patterns-- I wasn't brave enough to do that a couple of months ago. The mask could use some shading.
Pariah Press: Lovely bright colors on those Slaan, especially the yellows.
Paradigm: I can't decide which I like better, the rust on the armor or the sadness in the eyes. Nice work!
Vejut: The red skirts contrast nicely with the cool grey of the armor. Kudos to you for taking the highlights so far-- I can't seem to make myself do that.
lifeafter: The blue metallic wings are a wonder to behold.
Modock: Your NMM gold is spectacular, as are the eyes.
DV8: What an odd, delightful model. The freehand maps really make the model.
DJJazzyJeff: Those are some nifty Gaslands cars. It must have taken forever to get the white that smooth.
Chris56: Nice work on the cape, especially all the dots-- it gives the model a real tribal feel.
Ezki: That mega-armor looks lived in-- the yellow patches on the red really catch the eye and sell the battle-damage effect.
Midget Gems: Purple and yellow shouldn't go well together, but with all that red and greed, it works.
feltmonkey: This is an interesting exercise in lighting effects, but the model is a little hard for me to read. Maybe it needs more midtone?
Arakasi: that's a solid BB model. The chalk line in the grass is a nice touch.
All in all, I'm proud to be among such excellent painters. You all make me want to be better!

Another great round to finish off the year. Really fantastic work from everyone and it was really hard to limit my voting to just five for me. I won't reveal who I voted for as usual but I'll drop some votes on gallery pages available and add some comments for folks. Thanks Josh for the comment and glad you like the shield Chris56 (only spotted it in the other thread now)!
Nev: Mentioned this in your P&M thread but great work on the ladies, the basing works nicely with the armour and the gemstones have a lovely pop to them.
kb_lock: I like how you've gone in on the theme of this round with a Blood Raven stealing stuff You've done well with all of the detail and the armour has a nice shading (gradient on the greave?).
Rybrook: Great job on Kal and pal, the hazard stripes on the las pistol are a selling point for me and I like the contrast you achieved on the jacket with the leather holsters.
QAR: Overall a lovely piece of work. I am fond of your use of natural materials for basing and the added flowers are a good contrast to the figure, which has gorgeous greens and skin tones. Can't fault this one.
Viterbi: The difference in scale here is amazing but you've done a great job on all three minis. Eowyn is my favourite, great vibrancy and colours picked but I do have to mention the flying jacket, that looks like a proper leather jacket.
E3DD: Nice to see another warband to compare to! I am impressed by the gradient on the clothing and the variety of skin tones used on the minis which makes them very distinct. I think a few highlights on the deeper purples would add some more definition but overall bang up job!
ZergSmasher: Great set of marines, good panel lining and layering overall and I like the sgt's face, which has some good definition. Great job with the crisp freehand on the right pauldrons!
Captain Brown: Great rendition of Kal and pal, I like his dark green coat and how it contrasts with your brown leather and good work with the the las pistol hazard stripes.
Tyranid Horde: Overall I'm fairly pleased with how these turned out. I got to try some new techniques with my airbrush and gave environmental lighting a try. Noticing a few mistakes but live and learn.
Graven: Love the colours you used on the Harbinger and how they contrast with your shadow colour. The pumpkin king looks brilliant, especially the eerie glow off him.
Jamie Shred: Great bunch of preds, they feel very much out of the movies and the basing job you've done works well off their sculpts. Well done on the mottling, I find that difficult to pull off.
JoshInJapan: Great set of figures and I'm impressed by the shading on the pink. The blue goggles are a great focal point too and really draw me to the faces.
Freya: Great work developing some nice blends on the space puppy. The frost axe looks great coupled with the red haft and the ice effects are neat. Only thing I could suggest is add another bright highlight on the NMM backpack? It's looking a little yellow for my taste.
Yorkright: The shield captain looks great, I like your colour transitions on the blade along with the subtle OSL and the silver filigree breaks up the gold nicely.
maxwin: Probably my favourite this month, you've nailed what Ghaz is all about for me, over the top Orkish madness! The chrome exhausts and glowing barrels are tremendous but the skin tones you've used look really complex!
MobileSuitRandom: I liked this one a lot, the colours you use are vibrant and the basing blends with the sculpt so well. Great freehand on the cloak too with some nice transitions.
Maharg: Another one that caught my attention, the improved photos do your piece wonders. Great weathering on the armour and metals and that scope sight is a great focal point!
Turaxa: Classic model to choose. I like that you've gone for the diamond pattern which is no easy task and I think it's carried off well on his leg. A couple of highlights would make it pop I think and I like that little crystal!
Pariah Press: Great paint jobs on your Slaan, you've achieved good saturation in your colours and the details are well defined.
Paradigm: Nicely done bust and I think you've done a great job showing off the living and dead side of the Knight and I like how the decay increases across the mini.
Vejut: I like the highlighting work you've done on the mini and the difference between the materials is obvious with the style you've gone for. I think something else on the base might be worth adding as a bit of extra interest but overall a good job!
lifeafter: Celestine looks great, those wings are the stand out part of her and you've done some lovely layering. I think the face and cape could do with a little bit more highlighting to push the contrast to the same level as the wings but great job overall.
Modock: I'm considering saying this is one of my favourite pieces from you. Lovely work overall, and I sure as hell can't fault it.
DV8: Another of my favourites this month, I like how fun the mini is and the paint job back it up. The maps are just lovely and the little nicks are a nice touch of realism.
DJJazzyJeff: Bang up job on the gaslands cars, I think they both look great but the black yellow and orange scheme is really eye-catching and I like the roll cage in there too.
Chris56: Great models and you've nailed them I think. The skin tones are amazing and the freehand is a lovely addition. I think the beast could do with a little bit more work on the face but it looks great overall.
Ezki: Great looking meganobz and you've incorporated some great weathering into their mechanical bits. Great skin tones used and the check patterns are awesome.
Midget Gems: Great bit of work on this captain, you've packed him full of detail and I like the skin vibrancy. Only complaint is that one undrilled barrel!
feltmonkey: I like that you've gone for a limited palette on this one and I think the lighting effects do a great job of bring the mini to life. The swirling on the base is a lovely touch.
Arakasi: Nice scheme and feels very "football" with the bright colours. The pitch is a great bit of skill getting the pitch marking down and I think the only place that could be improved is by adding a highlight or two on the skin.
Great work everyone, I'm really enjoying these monthly challenges!

Thanks Nevelon for running this round and for such a speedily created voting thread!
Freya – Thank you very much, it means a lot.
JoshInJapan – I’m glad someone noticed the smoke, took me longer than the chrome! I wanted the barrel glow to illuminate the smoke so used
wet blending with red and grey to create a sort of osl effect.
Tauist – Thanks!
Tyranid Horde – Thanks man! I pretty much rethought my approach to every element on this model and it seems to have paid off

@ Tyrnaid Horde: I'm glad you noticed the visors/goggles/sunglasses. I originally planned to do them as mirrorshades, but couldn't get it right.
@maxwin: Thanks for commenting. I was pretty tired of painting pink and black by the end of the month, so it's kind of relief that they turned out as well as they did.

I mean, Dark Angels and Space Wolves can work together, they just have to have a little honor duel before doing so, right? I'm pretty happy with how the gray armor turned out other than where I missed my mistakes with the other colors.

Thank you good sir! The Pack Leader's face (Sons of Russ don't need no sergeants!) is probably the thing I'm happiest about with the unit; it came out better than I had hoped. The freehand on the pauldrons was done by laying down the red background, roughly blocking in the pattern in black, and then switching back to red to clean up. I couldn't just paint the black that neatly, I don't think!

Yep I agree. I don't know what I gotta do to fix it but it was my first go at NMM (Thanks to JoshInJapan for the inspiration) so I'll hopefully have it down with a few more tries.

Your NMM technique is definitely going in the right direction. What I would say is that generally NMM needs super high contrast, so I would try to push those light points up super bright. Even on my NMM gold I usually do at least one layer of pure white on some of the hard points and the edges.(despite gold not reflecting pure light) but the illusion is key rather than complete realism. Once you master this then you can experiment with dialling down the contrast a little whilst still maintaining the metallic illusion. This is something I've yet to do myself.

Thanks for the comments everyone, im really pleased you can still see the skin patterns as they were heavily muted when i applied the wash.
Standout for me this month is Maxwin and the vote count shows it. Excellent work and not content with one amazing piece you threw another in too.
Also thanks to the organisers and everyone involved for keeping this going.

Utilizing Careful Highlighting
|
Thank you everybody who's commented and voted so far.
JoshinJapan: thanks! I don't think I took them as far as it looks due to glare though.
Tyranid Horde: I'm glad the different highlighting worked on it! I was kinda trying to match my other "for RPG work" bases, but it is a bit plain. Thank you.
Maxwin: Thank you! I was hoping the brush work wouldn't be quite as noticeable, but at least it mostly worked?
and trying to give back with comments:
Nevelon: The color choice came out nicely, I like the bone, and neatly painted. I think could use more highlight but they came out pretty good.
Kb_lock: some nice blending and spot osl
Rybrook: characterful old models, and nice work on the guns
QueenAnnesRevenge:wonderful job all around, subtle and neat freehand. Your usual top tier work.
Viterbi:very neat painting on all of them, I really like Eowyn's dress. Severa could probably use a bit smoother on the highlights but they look good together.
E3DD:The masks and skin are a bit flat, but the painting is very neat and I really like the fabric blend.
Zergsmasher: Nice looking Space Wolves, the poses are nicely active
Captain Brown: another set of classic models. I like the paint work for the fabric on both of them
Tyranid Horde: I like the nice bronzed skin, and the effect on the sheild is great
Inmygravenimage: the pumpkin monster is quirky, and I like the orange on it. I'd have liked to see more of the other monsters wings, they look like a good blend
Jamie Shred:bright and cheerful colors on them, they look good
JoshinJapan: I really love the pink on these girls. The shading is great.
Freya: I like the ice attack effect, and the NMM looks good.
Yorkright: the jewels are nice bits of spot color. I like the cloak, but you could probably push the highlights a bit further.
Maxwin: eyecatching and amazingly painted model. If I had to pick a favorite part, it would be the barrel glow and smoke.
Mobilesuitrandom: wondefully trippy colors. The freehand looks good as well.
Maharg: the skin is great. The missing bit of weathering on the back of the plates wasn't glaring, but does help now its there.
Turaxa: The diamonds came out very nice! Shading the mask a bit might help separate the parts out.
Pariah press: colorful classic models! I like their style
Paradigm: the color split and the side views work very well. He looks good.
Lifeafter: The wings look good, and definitely draw the eye.
Modock:another all around great looking model. I like the hints of rust in the chain armor
DV8: the paint job is great, but the whole concept and pose is cute and what really sells it for me.
DjJazzyJeff: They came out pretty flashy! Ghe windsheild highlight is a nice touch.
Chris56: the skin came out great! The mane and lion face is looks a little rushed from your normal standard, but the freehand is pretty cool.
Ezki: I like the weathering on them. They look good!
Midget Gems: I like the copper and skull. The base works well
Feltmonkey: you really made the limited pallette work, the base especially is a nice bit of minimalism, but works.
Araksi: The markings on the base and the jersey are pretty cool.

Vejut wrote:Zergsmasher: Nice looking Space Wolves, the poses are nicely active
Thank you! The poses in the Intercessor kit are fixed, but at least they are cool poses, and I really liked the Chainsword arm from the Space Wolves Primaris Accessory set, so I just had to use it.
Been a while since I did this and I can't remember who got my five votes, so I'll go ahead and give everyone a comment:
Nevelon: Banshees turned out well. I'm used to seeing a brighter white tone on the armor/clothing, so these make an interesting change from that.
kb_lock: Long time no see! The Bluhd Rehvens Chapter Master looks good, and it's fitting that he's got a "donation" from Roboute Guilliman on his belt.
Rybrook: Very crisp and nice paintjobs on those two. I especially like the green on Kal's jacket.
queen_annes_revenge: That freehand on her cloak looks really good. Nice and muted rather than being bright and garish. The rest of the model looks great too!
Viterbi: Eowyn looks a little out of place with those other two, but all three are painted well!
E3DD: Good choice of colors; you can't go wrong with purple and gold on Slaaneshi models. As others have said, a little bit more highlighting would do wonders (although from me that's the pot calling the kettle black! ).
Yours truly: My entry came out okay, but I think if I'd done more throughout the month instead of cramming most of it in the last couple of days it could have been much better. Still nice to get some more Sons of Russ done.
Captain Brown: Another Kal and Scabbs, this one with a more muted palette on Kal. They turned out great, especially the faces and weapons!
Tyranid Horde: Another Dread Pageant! The blending on these is phenomenal!
inmygravenimage: The models look nice, but I wish we could have a little closer look at the guy with the wings, maybe a couple different angles. You've definitely done well on them though.
Jamie Shred: Those are some ugly motherf*ers! (yes, that is a compliment!) I'm a huge Predator fan, so it was cool to see you paint these guys.
JoshInJapan: I like the color scheme on those players. They look flashy, but not totally gaudy, which is nice.
Freya: Very nice use of blending! I'm not brave enough to try doing NMM, so I have to respect anyone who can do it, especially if they can do it well.
Yorkright: I love how instead of doing pretty much all gold, you've picked out some of the model in red and silver. The blue gems are a really great touch also!
maxwin: Holy crap! 'e really is da biggest, baddest boss! Ready ta krump sum zoggin' 'umie gitz fer shure!
MobileSuitRandom: The model looks nice, but like a lot of the new Lumineth models the spindly support on the base almost gives me anxiety!
Maharg: Pity you could only do one Flash Git instead of a whole unit, because the one you did looks amazing! Now you just need to paint his fellows to the same standard and you'll have some of the flashiest gitz around!
Turaxa: Gotta love old school models! A few shades and highlights would really make these pop.
Pariah Press: More old school stuff, love it! I like the bright vibrant colors; somehow they are very appropriate on Lizardmen.
Paradigm: The more I look at this model, the more I like it. Especially the heavy weathering on the armor.
Vejut: Interesting to see you do a model that's not an animal! The skirt turned out really good!
lifeafter: Celestine's wings are really striking! The rest of the model looks good, but man, those wings!
Modock: As if we needed proof that you can do good work in any scale. Some superb color gradations on the armor plates, and those eyes are gorgeous!
DV8: Now THAT is a characterful model! I love all the little details like the map and the compass; stuff like that really enhances a model like this.
DJJazzyJeff: Those cars look like they belong in a Fast & Furious movie or something; much brighter than most Gaslands stuff I've seen. They turned out pretty good!
Chris56: I'm not sure what kind of beast that is, but we'd better hope that trainer is good at his job! The freehand markings on both are fantastic!
Ezki: Now that is some of the best weathering I've ever seen!
Midget Gems: As a contrast to some of the other Ork entries on this list, that captain looks pretty clean. I suppose if any Orks would keep their stuff clean and well polished, it would be Flash Gitz!
feltmonkey: Something about the color palette and her facial expression looks really sinister. What game system is she from?
Arakasi: I love the crisp paintjob on that guy! And the yellow football makes me think of some of the ones they use in Australian Rules Football.
Overall everyone did really well this time around! The quality of the finished entries is sky high, which is probably why a lot of entries haven't got the votes they probably deserve. Still, everyone here deserves kudos for getting something done! Shout out as always to Paradigm for getting these challenges started, and one last time to Nevelon for stepping up while Para's been indisposed. See you all in the next season of challenges!

Thank you for any comments on mine, its pretty basic but my time is very limited. I'm really getting conversion withdrawal symptoms, hopefully I'll be able to do a good one for you guys this year
Been quite a while since I’ve done a full entry post so doing one now.
Nevelon: The Bone armour looks really nice and the green base with the red hair looks very effective.
kb_lock: stunning model, and really cool effect on the scabbard.
Rybrook: 2 very iconic models, green is really nice on the coat.
queen_annes_revenge: wow that cloak is epic, great display piece
Viterbi: look like very cool models and good blue highlights on the dress but hard to see them.
E3DD: very nice transitions of colour across all the models
ZergSmasher: Great work Zer, theseguys look very good and nice attention to detail with the shading/weathering
Captain Brown: I really lke the hair on these models
Tyranid Horde: Very interesting to see your take on these compared to E3DDs. Bases are good and the green/turquoise adds a good contract to the purple.
inmygravenimage: That monster looks a beast but need some more pics of it!
Jamie Shred: I like how you have made the blood and gore really vibrant, really draws the eye compared to the plainer metal areas.
JoshInJapan: The pinky/purple has a really smooth highlight to the raised areas, well done.
Freya: Excellent pose and highlights across the model. The model has a real purposeful feeling.
Yorkright: A very serious model with gritty determination.
maxwin: Wow Maxwin, this has to be my fav model I’ve seen from you, you have nailed this one. Some many bits from the Crome to the, red hot gun done so well.
MobileSuitRandom: A very showy off model, I’d be scare to move it. Nice colours on the cloak
Maharg: Well you kicked my ass in the Flash gits show down. The weather looks great.
Turaxa: Well done Turaxa, I always have a sort spot of the old school models.
Pariah Press: Some very fancy colours on those reptiles. Fit the theme very well.
Paradigm: You have made the bust have a really hunted look and a nice reveal between the 2 different sides
Vejut: Good tones on the dress and hair Vejut, well done
lifeafter: Those wings are amazing, really draw you into the model.
Modock: Damn Modock, it almost looks alive.
DV8: Great skin tones and very fine detail on the maps
DJJazzyJeff: Well done Jazzy Jeff they look ready for a race
Chris56: nice highlights on the skin and intricate detail on the cloak looks great
Ezki: Really well painted and I love the different weathering on the different surfaces.
Midget Gems: meh, it’s a table top standard entry but all I can do atm. Looking forward to when the schools finally go back and I can have my evenings back.
feltmonkey: Very interesting use of a limited platte, cool experiment mate
Arakasi: very dynamic model, I hope he doesn’t show off too much and drop the ball

OK, time for the winners!
Tie for 3rd, with 26 votes each.
First is queen_annes_revenge with a Kingdom Death Order Knight Pinup. Who needs armor when your cape has freehand like that?
Trust the squirrel. He knows the way to the podium.
DV8 -- Halfling Navigator
It’s hard to find words to describe the second place winner, besides “breathtaking” With 29 votes Modock’s Excelsy, female warrior.
First place should not be a surprise. Orcs are going to fight, they are going to win, and bigger is best. Amazing work here backs up that with paint and 31 votes. maxwin with Ghazghkull and Makari!
As always, amazing work from everyone who participated. This wraps up the year of competition and my tenure running it. I now hand the reins back to Para. Looking forward to another great year painting with all of you.

Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to everyone who left comments. I haven't had time to leave comments this month due to all my time and especially my hobby energy being completely eaten up. It's the same reason I had to enter something that I hadn't spent a lot of time on. I would have liked to have been able to spend more time getting it right, but in the end it was one of those "streak extending" entries. Again, sorry for the lack of comments. I would have liked to keep that streak up as well. Suffice to say there was a lot of great work on show from absolutely everybody.

Thanks to those who commented on my entry. I'm glad the diamond pattern doesn't look totally awful. I want to have another go, but perhaps on something a little bigger before I tackled another tiny Harlie. The mask is actually pearlescent, which adds a little definition, but the camera renders it as a flat white. I hear you all on the need for shading and highlighting, I may go back to it at some point and add some.
Congratulations to the winners, those are some stunning entries up on the podium. Also thanks to Nevelon and Paradigm for running this competition.
