I'll start:

7th edition. I have a Librarian Conclave, with I think three members. I separate from their squad, while my opponent has two key things:

A S6 AP3 Baleflamer on his Heldrake.
A Power that would reduce their Toughness by one.

For those who don't know, back in 7th, if your Strength was double the Toughness of the enemy model, you killed them outright. (Barring Eternal Warrior.) If you failed a save, insta-dead. And AP3 meant my Librarians got no save.

So, one roasting later, I lose half a Dev Squad and all three Librarians. I don't concede-I fight to the end!-but I got BOPPED. Was one of the shortest games I've ever completed-maybe half an hour total, because HOO BOY. That wrecked me!

I failed to adequately screen out Deep Strikers during my deployment in the last game of a tournament during early 8th. My opponent rightfully took advantage of that and did some near-crippling damage to my army in his first turn. It probably cost me the championship.

Dem. That's rough-mine was just a random game at the store, no prizes or prestige riding on it.

I did something very similiar.
For some reason I got it in my head you can only DS within minimum of 12" that one game. No idea why. I knew the rules is 9" DS, and had plenty of experience but just had a mental block on and convinced myself its 12" lol.. Lo and behold a unit of DG blight lords dropped behind my reaper squads and characters and turned it into a blood bath.

I made the decision in 6th edition to play a fluffy Nid list vs a pure Imperial Knights list. Worst decision I ever made. Game was over in 1 turn.

It had been a long day, I wasn't on top of my game by the time the final match came around. My advice? Get good sleep and eat well before important games.

Actually, just get good sleep and eat well always. How to win at lyfe.

I think deployment is my most risky time in a game. I'm often not fully engaged yet, chatting with people or just not fully paying attention. I feel like I sort of "wake up" in turn two a lot of the time, lol. I tend to start by playing a defensive game for that reason, then spend the rest of the game correcting whatever mistakes I made in the first 20 min.

Taking a list that resembled something approaching a fluffy, characterful army that exists in the stories instead of the flavour of the month WAAC army.

For this reason, I will always be terrible at 40K.

Whenever I take the Guard Grand Strategist warlord trait I always forget about the free reroll. Not a huge thing, but it could be used to swing an important roll in my favour.

I often lose track of the stratagems available to my army. There's just so many things to keep track of these days. Many Guard stratagems aren't amazing, but they can definitely be useful. Something like Jury-Rigging is normally pretty bad for 1 CP but if your tank is only 1 wound away from going back up a bracket it's a no-brainer. Just little things like that.

Back in 4th (I think), first time using the Eversor and I was under the impression that his Melta Bombs could be used for every single one of his CC attacks. So something like 8 S8 Ap1 attacks made short work of any tank he came in that game.

Ouch. That's a nasty spot of "cheating", though obviously accidental.

Waaay back in 2e, not reading the event description properly for a game at a con.

I showed up with my x-whatever pts worth of Guard & found myself in free-for-all 8 player game where, other than me, the lightest things on the board were wraithlords. Uh oh....
Beyond that there were Armorcast Warhound titans, Reaver Titans, Chaos Reavers, Baneblades, & Shadow Swords galore, + 1 Eldar Phantom titan and 1 Ork mega-Gargant.
My heaviest piece was a LR Demolisher. :(

Suffice it to say, my vehicles did not make it through round 2. By round 3 all I had was a bunch of foot slogging infantry running about trying to survive/do as much damage as possible.
Fortunately I operate on the Boy scout motto - be prepared. Every single squad had special & heavy weapons (mostly AT stuff) & anyone who could have them had Krak grenades & Melta-Bombs.

By the end of the game I'd taken 90%+ casualties, only had half a squad of Stormtroopers left, accounted for several Wraithlords (one in melee!), can claim an assist on a Shadow Sword, & put damage on several other things.
But best of all? Very late in the game that stormtrooper squad bagged themselves a Reaver Titan - by chucking Krak grenades on it from a rooftop.
Player marched the thing down the road, parked it next to the building I was on (knowing full well I was there), & ignored me in favor of a "real" target. {seriously, what threat is half a Stormtrooper squad?}
(shrugs) Having survived to my turn I took my best shot. Kaboom!

Back in 5th playing my Orks against my young son's Space Marines.

1st turn my Loota's targetted his Whirlwind as the biggest long distance threat.

His brand new, shiny Whirlwind that he was playing for the first time.

Needless to say I got lucky and the Whirlwind exploded in its first game without ever firing a shot. I felt terrible.

Still haunts me to this day.

Back in 5th. at a tournament playing in what was suppose to have been the last game of the day. I explained to my opponent that a charge he wanted to make, crossing terrain, would force him to fight last. Had I waited it would have been a very different outcome. I didn't realize at the time that I was playing for first place. My loss was so meteoric that we had to play a 4th fame to end the event. This game was as you'd imagine played to the sounds of fire and screaming dinosaurs as the earth split and the oceans boiled.

The guy I was playing I had never played before but I knew he had a well earned reputation of winning ever tournament.
A really good guy, good opponent and extremely smart dude. Not winning that match will stick with me forever. Good times.

One charge cost me a tournament. lol Geeeez.

Sigh, Yet another doomed attempt by man to bridge the gap between the material and spiritual worlds

3E "Dakka Dakka" tournament, with special characters and super heavies allowed (they weren't normally allowed, then). I've got an Eldar list with 29 Aspect Warriors that was near unbeatable vs the Space Marine armies of the day. As now, they were very popular and a large majority played some flavor of them. I just made my Farseer the "real" Eldrad, as that was the mini I was using at the time.

I easily table my first two SM opponents then run into an IG player with a Baneblade, Solar Macharius and a Callidus. I don't remember the exact particulars of the custom mission, but I could only deploy half my army to start, and the rest randomly showed up on later turns. The IG player goes first automatically because of Macharius, and smokes my Wave Serpent hiding behind some woods. On my turn I cluster the surviving Banshees and Eldrad behind those woods as you could not shoot through them then, similar to obscuring terrain now. His second turn the Callidus shows up, able to be deployed anywhere, and hits all of them with her super flamer, then charges and kill Eldrad and consolidates into the few remaining Banshees. My opponent goes bananas before firing the flamer, and calls the TO over asking for a picture of the flamer hit. That picture might still survive somewhere. If anyone has it, its worth some kind of prize to me.

Anyway it was all downhill from there and I got destroyed. Two others went undefeated so that game lost me the tournament. Had I detached Eldrad and split them up better, things may have been different.

I think I played a game where I forgot to field around 600 points worth of models that was on my 1850 point army list. It wasn't a case of forgetting a unit in reserves but just didn't pull them out from the transport container for staging so they never got deployed. Whole game I kept thinking "wow this list is tiny" and it didn't dawn on me until the end of the game that I sat roughly a 3rd of the firepower of the army completely out of the fight.

Canadian Grand Tournament - fourth round. Both of us are undefeated. My opponent has Orks with many Pulsa Rockets. He has first turn and he announces his guess of the range to my Assault Squad. He reads from my face that I think he's off (I assume), as he then asks me for my opinion on the range. I give him my guess and he changes his guess to my answer. Which was dead-centre to my Assault Squad.

I looked at him thinking he was kidding and that he would honour his original guess but he kept on playing. I didn't feel like arguing, lost the match (my force was pinned) and notched that one up getting a better poker face (and holding people to their guesses//not giving them mine!).

All you have to do is fire three rounds a minute, and stand

Greentide vs Guilliman's parking lot, early 8th. I failed every single charge (2 or 3), killed like 40 points of marines in total and got tabled bottom turn 3 . Never again I played against that broken list.

In 8th I remember a game in which the opponent killed one of my already wounded vehicles with a single lucky pot shot, it exploded and wounded or killed tons of my models nearby, including finishing off another vehicle which also exploded causing additional havoc. I lost like 400-500 points due to a single anti tank shot.

Middle of eighth after a loooong hiatus where my main group had been playing a lot of D&D instead.

Playing my Orks against a buddies GSC. I move my warboss, fire his shoota and then end my turn. I forgot that I wasn't playing D&D, and needless to say I lost pretty soon after. He did ask me if I was sure and I stuck to my guns and wore the rather silly decision on my part. We had a good laugh about it, then played again once it was over.

Hmm. I suppose one of my bigger blunders would be having 2 Bonebreakers with Mega Nobs in them, failing their charges but rerolling the charges for free.

Only problem is that battlewagons and bonebreakers dont receive "Eer' we go!" to reroll one or both or all dies for free.

Roughly 80%-90% of the ork army has Er' we go! so i hadnt thought about the possibility that Bonebreakers didnt have it.

Didnt really cost me anything but i hate "cheating" because i accidentially dont know my own faction.

Hope, is the first step on the road to disappointment.

I think I’ve just met someone at my level.

Also, not so much a big blunder but a small one made consistently over and over. I play Thousand Sons a lot, my daemon prince has the spell gaze of fate, which lets you reroll a single die at any time during your turn. It’s warp charge 6 so it almost always goes off, and I have never remembered to use it ever.
