Looks like six of them were in the Ultramarines configuration, with one rocking the arms from the Dark Angels dread - and none of them on bases, which is interesting. This was before the sculpted 60mm base, and probably before the standard 60mm base, but I'm pretty sure Dreadnoughts came with a 40mm square base at that point, to help them not fall over as often.
No, they didn't. Firstly that dreadnought will never fit on a 40mm square base, even diagonally. Secondly, the model came without a base - it was a vehicle after all, so it's not like a base was relevant to the rules. All the studio ones were based on what look to be 60mm squares, probably made from plasticard or from multiple square slottabases glued together.
Also, the multi-melta, power fist (Blood Angels and Ultramarines), lascannon and missile launcher (Dark Angels) and Assault Cannon (Bjorn and Ultramarines) had no chapter-specific markings - only the sarcophagus fronts, banner tops and Bjorn's lightning claw were chapter-specific. Even there, the sarcophagus from the Blood Angels drednought has a winged skull - pretty generic, really.
As noted by other posters, sometimes they did come with a base, sometimes they didn't. While a base wouldn't affect the rules (from memory), they'd definitely help with keeping the dread stood upright.
And I'm fully aware that the arms were interchangeable - but the boxes they were sold in were listed as "Ultramarines Dreadnought", "Dark Angels Dreadnought", etc, and I was merely noting which patterns seemed to be used in the display. I wonder what lead to that one dread having the weapons from the DA box on a UM chassis for this display while the other six appear to all be standard Ultramarines dreadnoughts - was it something HQ asked for, or just something a store did, and did they catch any flak for it not being another UM dread straight from the box, for example...

Never seen that blister in my life. Is it not possible that that was the blister inside the DA Dreanought box? There's no price on it afterall, and GW did put blisters inside boxes (the ones that spring to mind are all the Warhammer Quest expansions).

The price is on the back. Honestly I don't remember seeing it on the shelves, I came across it googling "space marine metal dreadnought" (I was sure they came with 40mm square bases, but I must have imagined that!) - you could get them them separately from mail order however.

GW is notoriously bad at scale and numbers. Pretty much always has been. Just smile, nod, and embrace the fun. Look too close at the details, it all unravels.

Consider it a far-future space-fantasy and you'll be pretty much spot on. I think that originally and for a very long time, GW was mainly headed by very enthusiastic nerds who got excited about stuff but didn't always check their maths/numbers/real world references. Which is why you find little discrepancies here and there. One thing that comes to mind is that somewhere it mentions how thick the armor on a Lemon Russ or Land Raider or something is... and it turns out that on today's modern tanks, it's substantially thicker than that.

I don't recall the Dreadnought weapon arms being made available in a blister pack in stores - while you could certainly Mail Order them, I have no recollection of anything in WD at the time mentioning weapon arms in blister packs if you wanted the options.
Interesting find, for sure.

They weren't supposed to be. The idea was that vast numbers of guardsmen with their tanks and heavy artillery would do the fighting and then small numbers of marines would turn up and hit key strategic locations / individuals.

It was the 1st ed Dreadnaughts that came with bases (Furibundus class etc al) - the long legged variant I had needed a base as it was top heavy. The dreads in the pics here are the much larger, new fangled versions (to me!)

Depends a LOT on the gear.
A battle company is going to run around 3,500-4,000 points.
1st company is going to be around 6,500 (5 terminator, 5 sternguard, 10 LRs, command)
Tanks and dreads around 2,500.
Scouts, misc HQs, odds and ends I don’t want to parse out and count are going to add a bit more.
Plus the Thunderhawks, which are 800 points pop?
I’d ballpark the whole chapter at about 45,000 points. There is a LOT of flex in wargear though. That’s just my back of the envelope, had a martini math. Someone wants to crunch the exact numbers, feel free.

I’ve probably got a third of the manpower of the Ultras. Not fully painted (yet), and more if I dig into the Pile of Shame for extra bodies. Might be closer to 2/5ths of the chapter if that got emptied out. One fully complete battle company, another one of primaris spinning up, and about half each of the 1st and 10th. But I barely have enough transports to embark the 60 tacs of my company.
Sooooo many metal boxes needed. And they basically double the cost of the endeavor. For things that are going to collect a lot of dust. Not that half the chapter isn’t purely for the display cabinet anyway, but marines actually have options.
The nice thing about Rhinos is you can use the chassis for other things. Swapping the top for a Razorback or Whirlwind is a snap, and with some careful magnetizing you can make them moddable to Predators. I've got 10 "Rhinos" and a box full of turrets.
While true (I do the same thing with my 6 boxes) there are 85 in the chapter pic above. Plus the 9 kitted with turrets. If you want to get a “true” chapter, they will break you. The motor pool in general. Every new kit they release the toss a few into the armory. And they have been doing so for a long time now. I mean. . . there's really not a point to go full chapter other than a crazy display anyways. Even in lore it's rare that an entire chapter assembles in a particular theatre. Most of the time you're looking at a reinforced company on the high end of things.
My collection is probably four companies worth. 2 Battle, the 1st, the 10th and maybe some odds and ends from reserve companies. I'd like to have transports for everyone that needs it (counting that Terminators don't because they can teleport, and Scouts don't because they Infiltrate) So far I've got 10 (standard) Rhinos, 2 RT era Rhinos, 6 Drop Pods and 8 Land Raiders. I'd like to round my pods up to 10 and maybe find another 2 RT Rhinos. That'll be a total transport capacity of 320, more if I ran my 4 'modern' Land Raiders as Crusaders. That'll be more than enough. Actually it sounds like a stupidly large amount when I count it out like that.
I have always though that a full chapter was more or less of a waste, unless it fell in your lap of course. My biggest issue is that the 8th and 9th companies seem rather bland to me, and can be very situational. Not to mention the fact that you really did not have a way to just play that part of the chapter outside of Apoc games in the past. 6th and 7th companies you can play regular FOC in the past, but once again a little bland. Having said that, I still had high ambitions when it came to my Space Marine Collection, and having all four battle companies with 1st and scout companies is a goal that I can see me doing. Personally I have a fully kitted out Crimson Fists battle company with full compliment of elites and scouts, and enough for three more battle companies with some items that I still need to get, not including elites, transportation, HS, and some scouts. Original plan was to go two companies of CF and eventually four battle companies of a homemade Space Marine army with all of the trimmings, that I have no problem going renegade if necessary.(even doing company vs company) These days, i am not so sure that I can do that without spending my inheritance on it. Ergo, I am contemplating a scale back, to fleshing out what I have for the home made chapter and call it a day. If I manage to find enough to get that fourth company then so much the better, but that is going down on the bottom of my shopping list for my hobby. I probably will not get that second company of CF, but you never know, a whole company of Space Marines may fall in my lap sometime in the future.

GW should offer a formation for a nice round 40,000 points.
Didn't they sell a whole chapter deal some years back?

At what point was it decided to make the Ultramarines the cover stars for the Space Marine faction/ the game as a whole?
It was famously the Crimson Fists for first edition, and the second edition cover art was Blood Angels, with third as the Black Templars.
But I remember when I got into the game in the mid nineties Ultras were already the box art for most SM units.

Black Templars may have had the boxed set for third but Ultras were already creeping in as the studio paint scheme army in second, as this painted chapter suggests. It was also "Codex: Ultramarines" rather than "Codex: Space Marines" in 2nd.

I'm not sure it was ever as true as we think it was. My memory is RT-Crimson Fists, 2nd-Blood Angels, 3rd-Black Templars, 4th Ultras (OK so there), 5th Ultras... can't remember past that. So it may actually be more of a modern thing.

Remember the 6/7th starter boxes were DA vs. Chaos. So while Ultras might have been on the unit box covers, there was a solid slant towards the Angels overall.
Also, 5th and prior encouraged you to take the named characters, kitbash your own, and include them in other chapters. So while Ultras got the lion’s share of specials, everyone could use them.

It's less about them being poster boys for the game, and more just unifying the image of the brand for boxes.
If all your basic Space Marine products are all in a single scheme, then it makes them look more impressive, cohesive and organised on a store shelf.

It also makes it significantly less confusing or punishing for new players.
I remember when I started I thought about going with dark angels but I didn't understand who could take what. I just wanted to play "Space marines" and have options.
The way that GW has it set up now is a lot better. There's only a handful of units that are unique, and I believe that all the new unique Primaris units are either characters, or a paint scheme ( SW reivers).

This was true from 3rd or 4th edition onwards - I don't recall exactly when they started encouraging it, but during 2nd edition there was a commentary from one of the Devs in White Dwarf, I think as an aside on one of the FAQs, that was dead set against the concept. The special characters were, in their view, inviolable, and people should be coming up with their own unique characters rather than just slapping a different paint job on Marneus Calgar to make use of him in different Chapters.
Which wasn't a massive issue at the time, since from what I saw at the time the vast majority of pick up games and tournaments didn't allow special characters anyway, as they were deemed to be too overpowered.
