In an ideal world, we discerning consumers would reward companies with passion for their products, and punish them when they break lore/consistency/balance to sell more toys.

Well, that's obviously happening once the codex comes out. [Assuming old marine models aren't squatted, which I'll reiterate seems very low probability... this go around]
The marine wounds upgrade is a given once the GK, TS and Chaos marines get their relevant codex.

Why in the world would they want passion? What good would that do them? The trade is money for things, that isn't hidden or complex.

No, you're thinking of skilled artisans.
Passionate consumers begets internet rage.
Unless you're bedding someone (and have a healthy relationship), passion is frickin' dangerous.

1) And how exactly do you think I'd punish such a company?
2) GW makes most of thier $ from me due to them selling me models I like - wich is not at all reliant upon their rules.
So why would I punish them? They continue to do what { I } want....

No, it doesnt.
If theres anything youd think people would realize by now, its that making the best highest quality whatever does not put you on top in a capitalist system. Every category of everything the most successful thing is just whatever tricks peoples hardwired brain chemistry into getting addicted to it.
The most successful music is songs dumbed down so you can predict the lyrics when you first hear it. The most successful food is junk food crammed with sugar salt and oil. The most successful video games are microtransaction farmville-alikes, and the most successful movies are zero budget pop scare horror flicks.
Obviously the most successful miniatures game just puts people in a cycle of manufactured discontent and fomo.

Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

Passion begets high quality products.
There's a whole King Of The Hill episode that proves this wrong in a very practical and palatable manner.

For clarity, I was replying to the comment that claims that they change the lore to sell more even if it is forced.
In an ideal world the company is invested in their game, and they design it with care, crafting it to a high standard. Obviously there needs to be skill involved, as passion does not guarantee quality. That is not the vibe I get from GW anymore.
I am with scotsman, many successful companies are the ones that simply exploit our shortcomings not the ones that create the best products (think processed foods as an obvious example). Or tobacco companies hyping their product with the whole marketing based imaginary they build around it (cowboy, tough guy smocking, or whatever other iconic image).
In current times companies put lots of effort towards tricking us, compared to skilled craftsmen who put their effort towards perfecting their trade.
GW had something truly original, IMO, in their grimdark world illustrated perfectly by John Blanche. They are living from the carcass of that, since IMO it is clear that the whole things been taken over by suits and marketing ploys.
I’d rather have a GW run by people who care about their product and take pride of its quality. Seeing how they butcher balance, obsolete minis and leave entire collections hanging (what the heck will happen to GK?), I don’t believe there is true care in GWs top brass at the moment.

Whilst I certainly have done my fair share of complaining about stupid changes to lore, ultimately it is the models that matter. If making cool models requires changing the lore, then so be it. Especially if the changed lore is some utterly inconsequential minutiae like whether Grey Knight Space Marines have 19 or 22 made up extra organs.

I just hope that GK strikes don't end up being, we took an intercessor with a autobolt gun slaped a power weapon on him, now go play with a 26pts intercessor in a world where the regular cheaper ones are considered not worth playing with.

I can accept 19, but 22 is just too far

Similar thing for me. I really like the Vanguard Space Marines, for example, and the Repuslor Executioner. [I wish it wasn't so tall, though. Maybe being half as tall would give it a lot more of an "MBT" look]

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |
