I agree that this was fairly underwhelming content for a headline "Warhammer day" preview. However that's almost certainly a symptom of the ongoing disruption to the release schedule. We know that several 40k codexes were originally meant to be out at least 2-3 months earlier than we got them. AOS is definitely still disrupted, as Maggotkin was planned to be out by now and the dragons still aren't available.

It's fairly likely that today was mostly stuff originally planned for announcement by Gencon, but instead has ended up in line with Warhammer Day. Perhaps at the start of 2021, GW expected today would be the first unveil of new CSM or Eldar. It's a shame, but on the grand scale of things hardly the end of the world.

Of course it isn't the end of the world. But its the latest trickle in an ongoing saga of 'massive' 'exciting' and 'best ever.'

They could manage expectations rather than -consistently- creating and then underselling them.

Just do regular updates as they become relevant, don't bother with the two heads yammering about nothing.

Other than that, the preview had not much for my taste (maybe the Pirate Oger)

The chrismas teaser will most likely be da black Gobbo (the old enemy of the White Dwarf)

Spoiler:

As opposed to the red gobbo who has already appeared as a christmas mini in the past couple years, and wears red as indicated in the preview?

The Red Gobbo is a 40k character.

Whereas the Black Gobbo is a character from the Fantasy side.

It would be odd to make an AoS themed teaser for a 40k character. There's really no connection between Goblin or Gretchin and Christmas, but GW rebranded the Red Gobbo from a revolushunary hero to Santa. If they're determined to share the love between the two main systems, it's not illogical to assume that the Black Gobbo, who already has a history of breaking the fourth wall as the counterpart to the White Dwarf, will get a Christmas miniature to give AoS players a Santa goblin of their own.

Not sure if you can count a box with 25 models, 2 of them tiny familiars, a "BIG" box by any extent.

Just came home.

Scope of reveal about as modest as I expected given the supply line issues etc.

Warcry has cool terrain, meh fighters.

Ogre Pirate is okay, a bit bland in the posing.

The rest ain't even worth mentioning. 40k battle box is meh, Nurgle character is meh, Dungeon Bowl barely counts as a release with no sculpts.

I still think it's weird how many of the Dungeon Bowl tiles look like the original Warhammer Quest tiles. I kinda want them now...

But yeah, this preview was lousy, and so many of us predicted it. Hell, my lowball predictions turned out to be way too optimistic. In the first 1/2 hour they managed to reveal 3 whole miniatures. Sorry AoS players, you only get one. Live with it. And twice they took the time to convince us to sign up to W+. No thanks.

If it weren't for the lovely Warcry Terrain there'd be nothing to be excited about.

This is about what was expected, though I did think there was maybe as mall chance of an announcement for next year.

Still,

2 more dexes knocked out for 40k is a great thing. That's 10 dexes this year if you count the SM supplements. Looking forward to the year of chaos next year since those rumors have been super accurate.

This HQ may well end as this character from the BL book https://www.warhammer-community.com/2019/11/10/black-library-weekender-2019-the-reveals/ so no new model for SoS is possible.

Honestly that would be good, not sure why they thought that was done well in the first place.

This might be utterly futile and only inviting raging trolls, if so, I'm sorry for that in advance.

But was that 1:45min of advertisements really it? That is the entire thing they made such a fuzz about? I never followed warhammer day, but I figured it must be some sort of alternative to Games Days, now that Corona made those impossible.

What I mean is, the entire "show" was 2 dudes talking to each other, barely even looking into the camera, about how great the new miniatures are and that everyone should totally buy them. I get it, GW needs to sell miniatures to stay in business and hence they need to advertise. Fair game.

But what about the rest? Why is there no designer "workshop" where they present the design process of one of the recent Codexes. Someone from the art department, showing of how they created some artwork and give some context to their thought process. Some BL author, talking about an upcoming book. An army on parade slot were they show of the coolest entries for 2021....you know....any of the stuff that is remotely in context to the actual hobby. I heard something about presentation slots, did I miss all of that? Their twitch channel only has the 1:45min vid.

And what is a half preview? Something like a preview to a preview? I thought they meant half time preview and I only got them wrong, but then the vid was over. If that really was it, then I have to admit, this is laughable. For more than a week they kept reminding us to watch a 1:45min QVC advertisement block.

Considering a lot of people consider anything GW does to be marketing/advertising including lore videos and interviews - yes yes that was advertising. I mean what else were you expecting? They've been doing these for several years now.

I believe that Warhammer Day and some other events have had panels and such, but in person; however the UK situation is still, on iffy grounds for such things so I can appreciate if GW didn't want to run one in the UK at this point.

The red part is the standard format of GW online previews. I don't remember if it's been exactly like if from the very first one on it, but it has quickly settled into that format.

Games Day, these days called Warhammer Fest, is still a thing that happens in May. Obviously not in physical form the last two times.

Warhammer Day is something GW randomly pulled out of its... hat a year or two ago, if I remember correctly. It's not much older than that. It's not a thing that is tied to or tries to mirror Warhammer Fest. Just a new marketing initiative without much meaning or use to the customers.

Online previews are set either to coincide with large events, both GW and non-GW where before Covid GW would have a presence, and at a suitable time determined by their release schedule and marketing plan. The online previews follow the same format, sometimes with more, oftentimes with less to show. They tend not to be specifically tied to any event they may coincide with.

There isn't any point to actually wasting time watching them. I just check in a couple hours later when the actual previews are up on WarCom.

And still find its basically a nothing-burger.

So it turns out that out of nowhere Octarius II is up for preorder next week.

Weird that they didn't mention that yesterday, and the Tau codex was announced in a random separate article mid-week instead.

Considering the reaction of twitch chat to all the other campaign book announcements they probably deliberately avoided it.

The difference between this preview and earlier ones is, that they talked much more and showed lesser as they did in the past.

It was billed as a preview of new stuff, and they previewed new stuff.

Not sure what the issue is for some.

Anyway, I loved ye olde Dungeonbowl of 2nd edition BB, so I'm rather chuffed it's making a comeback in it's own fully-featured boxed game. No new sculpts is fine, it's a starter set.

The Red Harvest box looks great but will probably be too expensive for me, so I'll just wait until the barbarians pop up in their own box because some of those sculpts are must-haves.

The pirate ogre and his crew are absolutely great. I'm a big fan of the Pirate Coast in Warhammer: Total War and have been (incredibly slowly) working on a Pirate Coast themed undead army, so I may pick it up just to paint because of the theme.

The 40k box doesn't really interest me, but I have a small force of Custodes and SoS, so the Codex will likely work its way into my collection at some point.

The rest didn't really interest me so I don't really have anything specific to say about it, nor do I feel compelled to criticise GW over it. What a world.

That pretty much took everyone by surprise, I'd think.

And the Warcry box is up for pre-order next week as well. That was fast. They spent more time hyping up Cursed City!

And never mentioned again...

It was a damned weird preview. 45m in and they'd only shown off 3 minis. AoS got exactly one mini reveal.

What's wrong with them over there?
