Since its metal, they'd be rubber molds... but they would have a set of production molds and a set of master molds from which to produce new production molds from, and if they take care of the masters and refresh them in a timely manner with new masters, they could potentially keep that production line open forever.

Which opens the question of why keep this particular set of models and not any other. Did all the other masters get dropped down a flight of the stairs and the Steel Legion ones miraculously survived?

As someone who has a bunch of steel legion and from what I know about mold making and casting it probably is that the steel legion are real easy on the molds and therefor needs mold replacement way less often and were more profitable to keep around, as apposed to Vostrians who well newer had a lot more details and that fur texture on the hats that probably meant the molds didn't last as long

The other regiments were on the website for years, too (just the squads though). And some years ago they made most of the models available as MtO - they could do it any time again, if they want.

Maybe they left the Steel Legion because they sold better than the 2nd edition regiments and are simpler and cheaper to cast than the Vostroyans. Who knows.

Going to be sad to see these guys go, them and DKoK were my favourite guard regiments so hopefully they get revisited at some point by GW. Would love Guard to have some of the kit variety that SM like to monopolize in their faciton.

Thanks! I think its due to it being black and white inkspot art that I couldn't pick it up on it. I honestly thought they were either Armageddon Ork Hunters or Catachans moreso than Steel Legion since most of them weren't wearing the trademark gas mask.

The thing that always was intriguing about me, was why did they pick this particular metal kit for sale when they discontinued all other ones. I mean there had to be a very specific reason, yeah?

the metal kits they kept on sale were those that were selling so slowly that they didnt sell out.

That's it. they swapped things to finecast when they ran out of the metal.

they used the same molds for finecast as they did for metals. That was the point of the formulation of finecast (and why it was such an inferior resin to, say, forgeworld, which obviously GW would have had access to but you couldnt just pour FW resin into old metal moulds and get anything out of it.)

Isn't that a Tallarn guy? I don't see how that's a Steel Legion guardsmen.

I did say "reimagined", didn't I?

I thought he was Tallarn too at first--but bits of the kit make more sense as Steel Legion.

For what it's worth, I think we're definitely seeing a bit of an attempt going on at differentiating things from the DKoK. There's another possible candidate for the Steel Legion in the Core Book though! P139.

The big ol' rumor dump, as well, is supported by the Cadian art on p22+23 in the Core Book.

Pretty sure thats a Tallarn... the last image we saw of an Armageddon guardsman was an Ork Hunter that had a much more "gangers" style appearance, and I have a hunch that thats the direction GW is moving them in if they ever make a comeback. While the clueless often associate the DKoK with Nazis, the ASL are more directly based on actual Nazis in their design and I can imagine GW wants to distance themselves from that a bit.

Worth mentioning that the Ork Hunters have always been described as being different to the Steel Legion in terms of kit and the like.

Doesn't help that they seem to have had Catachan training officers.

Nice conspiracy theory, but I doubt GW would have enough stock of these to last them 10 years on hand. Or somehow dig up leftover stock of white metal minis such as Diaznettes every time they offer MtO, I have handled freshly cast definitely metal ones myself. But maybe I am wrong and they really just randomly find things like metal bonesingers or 2nd edition farseers, I bought both brand new on last Eldar MtO

RIP Steel Legion Squad. My first fully painted army was Steel Legion Mech infantry in 4th edition. I loved those models, and even after all these years they still look pretty good.

They definitely deserve a hero’s goodbye.

Perhaps it is a case that the molds were not used as often as the others and are only now beginning to wear - basically, did not sell as much as the others.

It never ends well

Wargaming is littered with projects that never came to be or were cut short half way through because we never got around to it before the models were discontinued, didn't have the funds or were distracted by the new, shiny toys.

I'm so glad that I was right place, right time, right disposable income level to break the back of my Praetorian IG army.

For those who still need to do a 'Steel Legion', Wargames Atlantic Raumjagers can fit as a proxy. The new Death Fields weapons sprue has a lasgun type weapon as well.

Of all the regiments, if they were to do new plastic guard, I'd like to see SL or Catas. Who knows, maybe this is the beginning of a future of multiple guard releases?

IIRC, there is a rumor floating around about an upcoming KT box with Catachans vs. Tyranids.

Would be nice to have a squad to go with Sgt. "Ripper" Jackson..

Tempted to get 10 boxes for my retirement...

So what else was there in the range that is not present here? 2 Commanders with Powerswords, 1 Commissar, Sergeant with Ork Head, Plasma Gun, Heavy Bolter Team, Lascannon Team, and the Necromunda Sniper?

I really hope so. I was able to get The Colonel and Jackson, and I'd LOVE to have new catachan infantry...especially if they didn't look like they had Bicep cancer.

Except the Steel Legion squad did go "temporarily out of stock" multiple times, and so have quite a few of the other still-metal kits...

Not as sad as about last chance to buy vostroyans I wasn’t able to grab in time.
Still sucks…
I will take resculpts of catachans as an acceptable apology though.

Well depending on how things go, they really could easily do kits for the major six regiments (Vostroya, Valhalla, Steel Legion, Catachan, Cadian, Tallarn).

All they need to do is Infantry Kit---Command Squad----Heavy Weapon Team + 1 character per regiment. 24 kits total, could be done as a big update to the guard range. Overall, the vehicles are fine as is.

Thanks for posting this! I was hemming and hawing about getting another squad of these for my guard. Shame there's no alternate poses or other weapon combos. But I was surprised last year to find them still for sale and still metal, along with the old sanctioned psykers.
