You can 100% easily slot into plastic guard army. You know how? Here's the super secret trick: You put the models to the table.
There are some major advantages to that approach, even if you turn it up to 11:
- You get to collect and paint all different Regiments without having to paint the exact same miniature dozens of times
- You can easily identify which Squad a mini belongs to (mine have poker chip stripes on their bases, what is your solution to this problem?)
- You never have to worry about reposing your models
- Likely a rather smaller pile of shame (no duplicate I might need these squads in the future boxes)
- You can show other people the history of the Guard, first hand, without needing a second apartment for that
The only negative:
- You miss out on the horde look of absolute uniformity
Like this?
I did get a little bored though.
Some of those Praetorians are painted in schemes inspired by WWI, Kitchener's Camel Corps and the 95th Rifles.

It's not like anyone can pick up an army or detachment of Steel Legion, and an individual squad can't be easily slotted into a plastic Guard army.
Yea that is a big point too. If you wanted to do pure SL from just buying from GW, you couldn't no Hvy Weapons unless you want to go the Ebay route.

I think the ship for a pure Steel Legion army from GW sailed a looooong time ago.
This is for those who wish to pad out the force they already have.

I mean you say that, and yet GW just relased the DKOK infantry in plastic. While the rest of their sub-faction is not avalible in plastic.

a) It wouldn't be unexpected if we got more plastic Death Korps in the near-ish future
b) There are Forge World Death Korps. Unlike Steel Legion
c) The plastic Death Korps have enough parts to make some stuff beyond a sergeant with a single weapon option, a single special weapon, a single heavy weapon (illegally based), and six dudes

This kit is comprised of 10 metal Steel Legion Troopers and is supplied with 10x Citadel 25mm Round Bases. The Sergeant is equipped with a laspistol and chainsword, one specialist is equipped with a Missile Launcher, one trooper is equipped as a loader, and another specialist is equipped with a grenade launcher.
They haven't been doing anything with heavy weapons teams for Guard releases of late. Cadian repackage didn't include them, the DKoK sprues don't have them. Both when shown in their 'standard' playable format are closer to the current Veteran loadouts than an Infantry Squad in that they have multiple Specials.
For what it's worth as well, the plastic DKoK options for the Sergeant are also partly available to something called a "Confidant" in KT. Only thing the Confidant cannot take is the Power Sword.

Not illegally based. Official rule is what comes in box is legal. Anything else is not a legal rule

Fixture of Dakka
|
When I run IG, I like a platoon of the same squad, or to mix and match remnant "Veteran" squads depending on the type of game.
Thanks to Dakka Dakka, I've been able to get the figures I need, and also have the flexibility to go back and play with figures people are now scrambling around trying to buy on a "Last Chance" fake benchmark.
One thing I would have liked to see however, would have been recasts of the Sniper model, the LT model, and the Heavy Bolter team.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

Well. ain't that a B. I recently got back into 40K and built an entire 5000pt Steel Legion Army. Even purchased 10 boxes of these metal figures in 2020.
I, for one, could care less if they go OOP. I am just glad I built the figures I enjoy looking at.

I’m pretty damn disappointed they didn’t bring back the old heavy weapons/specials. I’d give them my money. Instead last year I picked up a ton of (almost certainly recast) metal heavy weapons teams on ebay.
I’d still be happy with more, though.
GW can have my money for 5 more boxes and a direct-only defiler, I guess I get a primaris sergeant out of the deal. Maybe someone will want to buy it.

The Polito form is dead, insect. Are you afraid? What is it you fear? The end of your trivial existence?
When the history of my glory is written, your species shall only be a footnote to my magnificence. |

Just ordered my last squad. Had to struggle with whether I wanted two more, but I think one is enough. Maybe if I could get the alternate sculpts rather than all the squads being identical.
Still pretty surprising that these guys are still available at all in metal, but sad to see them go. They've been my favourite Imperial Guard models since they were released.
