Subject: Re:GW Battleforces announced on Thursday (18th November)
Necron surprises me as they've had Indomitus last year and this year are in the Imperium Magazine - so whilst it is a very good set, it doesn't actually interest me. The bits I do want I can get in the magazine for cheaper and the rest I kind of have enough of already. However for anyone who missed out on those its a great set.
I think so far the 40K look like very nice, not perhaps as exciting to me, but very nice sets. The AoS are more "exciting/interesting"

As someone with both Ad Mech start collecting boxes I'm quite happy for it to have the more recent models in, and it goes well with the Combat Patrol box for anyone starting out. Can't really do one without the rangers/vanguard as there just isn't the troop choices.

The Ork one is pretty useless, Grots and Nobz? Two of the worst units in the codex. You only ever need max 1 killtrike and it's tricky to convert to another buggy, so this is definitely mostly for new players. It would have been better to skip the Grots and Nobz and added some Warbikes instead though, as currently it's a rather weird mix of units that doesn't synergize at all.

There's two options for Troops with AdMech.
It's either the Skitarii Ranger/Vanguard set or the Kataphron. Both have shown up in quite a few sets.
Personally, I'm a fan of Skitarii showing up. Means that I can fix my squads a bit easier while also getting some stuff I didn't already have(Pteraxii).

Well these are aimed to start armies so no surprise.

I like how Space Marines are most numerous after orks, despite having a vehicle in the bundle. We horde army now, eh?
I don't get why GW put old captain in there, though. Why not Gravis to go with HI? Or one of new ones? I'd also prefer Infiltrators instead of AI to match the theme of the army. Or hell, even Reivers. AI add very little, don't synergize with anything, and are very cheap from other bundles...

Well, yes, a vehicle would have been nice, but the box is actually quite interesting for me. I don't have the riders, flyers and the fat dude and only one walker and one squad of Sicarians. And I wanted to buy a hoplite upgrade kit from FW, so I need a new Skitarii box anyway... Dammit! Usually I never care for those boxes.

As these are likely candidates for gifts from the uninitiated, that might not be such a bad thing?
I think that they will never have "proper focus" because for most armies there are enough options that people will always have a problem with a kit in some form. More so for armies with more models where there's more diversity or odler armies where many established people already have most of the models and want specifics - often non-core things that they have loads of already.

Sure but it hardly does the newbies any list building favours, neither gameplay wise nor thematically.
The models are great (I love Grots and Nobs), and should be fun for a beginner to paint and I guess that is what they focus on.
Also, now that I look at these, they really should have added 1 more cheap, filler character to Sisters and AM. Would pad value a bit and make both look less puny on the table. It's just sad how little models they have compared to SM and orks, neither is supposed to be an low numbers elite army

The necron one is pretty disappointing. Not sure who told them people wanted two slot machines and even more warriors. Would have rather had more heavy destroyers and immortals.
The DG one looks pretty sweet. Guess that'll be my next army

All these boxes go absolutely great with existing discount boxes (from what I can see, I don't know tall the ins-and-outs of armies from a player's perspective but for an army collector they're super good). The usual whingers that are complaining that they aren't 100% perfect for their own individual needs would absolutely w/o a doubt have been whinging about these no matter what was included, we all know this.

35 infantry and a bike boss isn't super good for anyone no matter how much you bend over backwards to make excuses for GW. This has nothing to do with what I want for my army.

Well, I'd opt for two or three battleforces providing a decent start of an army.

Yeah you aren't on the list of usual whingers but anyway as I said it goes great with the existing offerings. ff the top of my head I can remember that the Ork CP has deffkoptas and a megaboss, anyone that has bought one or more of those is probably quite happy to see a plane and a different commander in here. This goes for all of the boxes from what I can see - the AM one, add that to the tank and the Enginseer and the Kataphron from the CP box, there's no duplicates aside from core troops. I reiterate, these boxes are great for beginners and experienced collectors alike.

Actually --- Scratch what I said about the Necron one - I just realised that those are wraiths in the background not the three legged warriors; and the Imperium magazine comes with the reanimator not the blaster walker.

The necron one is exactly the list of models i wanted to get lol (well... except the psychomancer. I already play night lords for useless morale effects).

Only bad thing about the Necron one (and it's a small letdown at worst imo) is the flayed ones taking up a good chunk of the value with the discount Imperium flayed ones just around the corner. The Sisters look kind of light on models I'm less excited about that now it has sunk in, might still buy it and try to flog off the vehicles and commander though six months from now, see if I can come away with a very hefty discount on the troops (which is all I want from this box) once the dust settles.
