Just kind of curious if there is any particular reason they don’t get to have whirlwinds or command rhinos. I mean I understand not having access to things like speeders or land raiders because they are specifically made for them but why not the rhino variants?

Because they have Immolators, Exorcist, and Castigators.

In English, because GW want to sell different kits for SOB rather than more Space Marine Kits.

I guess, though that still leaves them without an anti aircraft variant

Like the two pointless ones that GW made for space marines and never figured out what to do with? Why would Sisters need one?

Gods, the height of the overpowered flyers era and everyone needing a counter, no matter how mediocre they were.

The option would still be nice

hmm weird that the exorcist doesnt have an AA missile option. Really, all they need is a flakk missile strat to use with the exorcist to cover that niche.

Yet.

This is a faction that got a completely new line of models just a couple of years ago.

Controversial opinion but if firstborn marines ever get squatted for primaris. Just give Sisters all the old firstborn rhino vehicles.

Would be kind of ironic for the church to have the exact same vehicles as CSM.

I suspect lore-wise all they got given was the Rhino. Lets not forget that everything the Marines use is basically considered a holy item and whilst the SoB are a holy order, they aren't Space Marines. Chances are they just don't have enough political power and religious influence to tell the marines to give them other technologies.

Not forgetting that in this world setting making modifications to technology without the proper authority (from another techo-religious group) is heresy and can lead to all other kinds of nasty things happening to you.

So chances are the SoB only have the design work for the Rhino so they have to adapt what they have with other technology (with the proper permissions, rites and approval from the AdMech etc...). Once done the like as not don't "need" the marine equivalents.

What is it nowadays with everyone wanting to homogenize every bloody army?

They found the STC’s for their other Rhino based vehicles. Immolator and Exorcist. They made a deal with the Ad-Mech. The Sisters of Battle would give them these STC’s for exclusive rights to have these vehicles produced for them.

Not sure on the Castigator. That thing’s new.

Unless you're some variant of Marine in which case you can modify an STC(Templars and Crusaders) or outright deny an STC to the Mechanicus(Blood Angels and the Storm Raven) with no repercussions until GW decides it's time to give it to all Marines and suddenly those Chapters change their minds.

And loads of Imperial Guard regiments have small modifications here and there to their equipment. Either hiding them from their commissar or having one with a slightly broader mind than most.
Doctrine and rules tend to apply at the top end for standard things ,but break down as you get into the local scene.

Historically the rhino has been relatively available to various imperial organisations as a lightly restricted vehicle (the arbites use it for example).

The sisters rhino from 3e was actually a newer mark than the model used by the marines, created around the heresy with various enhancements (such as a powered turret ring) it was rejected by the astartes due to having a higher profile and this wasn't seen as a drawback by the ecclesiarchy.

The immolator was a partial STC for a flame tank found by the faithful and traded to the admech for exclusive rights and supply of a vehicle using that technology - the admech threw the flame turret onto a rhino (adding different weapons to chassis isn't 'invention' as far as tech heresy goes). They later found more STC scraps and completed the original flame tank, but didn't tell the Ecclesiarchy that they had broken the exclusivity contract in producing the hellhound tank and its later variants.

Exorcists were archaic vehicles found within the holdings of the ecclesiarchy on Terra. Their origins are unclear but the church have managed to hold onto them by virtue of having found them. Under the hood the exorcist is just another weapon system that has been fitted to a rhino - fundamentally they are semi-guided melta-missiles along with a poorly understood targetting cogitator, all the pipe organ stuff is purely for show.

Repressors were riot vehicles used by the Arbites. One of the sisters orders militarised a few of them (pretty much just swapping out the pintle mounted water cannon for a flame thower) during a joint operation and after lengthy discussion the high lords decided that using a police riot vehicle didn't break the rules on the ecclesiarchy arming up.

All change with the new edition stuff.

If I'm not mistaken, weren't the predators ordered to be given only to the marines? I remember reading about a decree during the horus heresy that because they were in high demand the Emperor ordered all Imperal Army forces using them to hand them over to the Legions and all further production handed to the Legions as well. Then Big E got oofed and no one was willing to retract the edict.

That would be the Land Raiders iirc

But didn’t the Inquisition have land raiders? Or did that get ret’conned?

The Inquisition is the Emperor (nominally), so any and all restrictions wouldn't apply. Also, IA 2 states that even some influential and very rich Rogue Traders might have one. Plus, there are a lot of Land Raiders in existence, who is going to poke the Inquisitorial bear or risk alienating a potentially powerful Rogue Trader ally? The Emperor was also very explicit that people shouldn't build a religion around Him, yet a couple of hundred years after He kicks the bucket, a big state-sponsored church appears.

Plus Balance and flavor.

In addition to flavor bits like the smoke stacks, and Gothic Arch bits (flavor) there's three Heavy Bolters vs the Predator's (Destructor) two, and a Battlecanon vs Different (Double) Autocanon on the Castigator for 10 points cheaper.

In other words, for 10 points less the Castigator has 1 more HeavyBolter and 1 more Autocanon (Balance).

This also keeps Sisters into their Heavy Bolter/Heavy Flamer/Multi-Melta flavor paradigm instead of giving them Lascanon on Predators. (Flavor)

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

IMHO if GW wanted to give the SoB a main battle tank, they should have looked into the pred variants. Especially if you go into the HH stuff, there are plenty of options that keep within the trinity.

But GW loves faction bespoke kits and flanderization, so here we are.
