I think the IF Captain was a modified version of one of these, released during 2nd edition? I'm pretty sure he wasn't in this wave of six on their initial release.

Yep, he was a rather crudely modded version of the Captain with Terminator Honours, packaged in the Imperial Fist army box. They slapped a fist on his shoulder pad and another on his imperialis, replacing the skull. Don't believe he ever got a separate release, but GW did some weird stuff with some of these guys without ever announcing it. Even rereleased the Wolf Captain as a Wolf Guard model during... 4th? 5th? Wish they'd included the Fist Captain in this MTO, though. I'd pay $35 for him easily, no regrets, even missing the proper cape backpack. The rest... eh... At $25 and with the correct original backpacks I would have gotten one of each, even the ones I already have, and duplicates of some, even the ones I already have.

Captain with Terminator Honors is the model that got me into 40k and I'd put one in every single Space Marine army I have if I could.

Huh, they couldn't be bothered to take pictures newer than the miniatures, huh? I guess they don't have the original ones around.

Man, I would take that proto-tycho, but not at $35. I recently got the second version of him and was shocked at how small he was. This one's even smaller and I just can't justify it.

@Abdykp - Now they may be ugly, but compared to most of the models at the time, they were pretty amazing. We've been spoiled by great advances in sculpting and mould making.

These may be released in a catalog prior to release of 2nd edition (I have no way to verify). But I wouldn't call it RT era. RT is mostly the mk 6 armor in general, while mk 7 was mostly considered 2nd ed. and never saw any players with this style during this time period. Except, may the SW model, I know they got a codex and models before 2nd ed released.

They are commonly adsociated with 2nd ed, since thats where they were most used, but 2nd ed didnt get released until late 1993. So these are in fact middle to late rogue trader era.

$35 a mini is laughably bad. Not even my nostalgia can get me to justify spending that on one of those.

$35 US is ridiculous for such dated sculpts. Yes, I thought they were great back in the day, and I've kept a primed, but still unpainted Blood Angel Captain in artificer armor (at least that's what it was called when I bought it around 3rd ed) for nostalgia's sake. But at $35, I'd rather get a box of Wargames Atlantic for bulk, or at $28 a Stargrave kit.

I hope whoever at GW came up with the idea of "one for the price of two" gets a promotion. Genius deserves recognition.

I would love to know how well these models sell at that price, actually. We'll never know, unfortunately, but it sure would be interesting to find out.

Wow. A hard pass.

I can get lots of rogue traders if I decided to spend that type of cash on ebay.

Yep, sculpt one parent model as a base, and then make lots of little changes to create multiple children of it. GW still makes some like that. I think I even remember reading an interview with of GW's founders where they talked about that.

Since I'm sure the molds have long made back their tooling costs, even paying the wage of who ever has to run the spin caster, I'm sure just selling a few minis will be a profit. Especially if they can use the original 90% Lead/10% Tin alloy. Lead is still cheap. Ironically, tin which has the connotation in English of being cheap, is the more expensive metal.

I considered buying the Dark Angels and Space Wolves ones, just because I happen to collect and play those chapters, but I saw the price tag and went "Nopenopenope." You can get the modern plastic characters at that price point (or you could before they hiked the prices). Why would I pay that for extremely dated sculpts? Nobody should buy these, but as has been stated already in this thread, enough idiots probably will that GW will do this again, at the same ridonkulous price point.

Crikey.. I had been tempted to grab these, as somehow the only one I actually have in my collection is the Ultramarines guy - and it's either a bad recast or has been rolled around on someone's concrete floor for a while at some point.

Temptation went away at the $56 each pricetag. I'll keep an eye out for them on eBay instead.

I'm pretty sure these were blistered at £2.99 around the time I would have bought Tycho. Maaaybe 3.50, an outside chance of £4.99.

Either way, putting those figures into the Bank Of England inflation calculator places the current day price between £7-£12 approximately. Even allowing for the fact that's up to 2021, and there's been a spike this year, £21 on something with next to no associated costs outside of manufacturing is pretty breathtaking.

Damn, the INFLATION which we all know is the only reason Games Workshop The Infallible ever raises their prices, must be really bad this year, huh? That INFLATION of theirs, has to be crazy, for minis to go from 3.50£ at release, to 35$, eh? One wonders how the British economy stills hasn't collapsed with INFLATION driving up the prices of everything by so much, and there's nothing that Games Workshop could ever possibly do about it!

The biggest problem I find with using those inflation calculators is that I am fairly sure nothing GW has sold has ever been included in the "inflation basket", and probably nothing comparable has either.

And, as with any luxury or niche items, their individual inflation costs are often a lot higher than Consumer or Retail indices.

They are what they are price wise, but I'll never understand the logic behind the MTO programme.

Surely GW would be better off looking at "what goes for money on eBay" and working their way down?

Assuming the price is set based on some projection of sales, the only fair thing they could do would be to have a start price, and the more people that order, the lower it goes to some minimum, the collective buying approach.

Not only that, I'm sure that at least some of them were in a two-pack blister, like old Captain "Peg-Leg" Picard. I know this because I bought him and his twin in one pack, painted one as a World Eater champion (decades-old paint job and gloss coat ahoy!) https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1138088-Corrupted%20Marine%20Captain.html

...and intended to use the other as an inquisitor, but I never got around to it, and have no idea where he might be.

Edit: Whew, maybe I should back off a little the next time I take a pic of one of my paint jobs...

They had some good deals with MTO. The Vostroyan platoon was actually cheaper than the box they sold back then (at least in Germany). Single models on the other hand always had a span from rather expensive to quite obscene prices. Those SM captains are a new level though. The Space Wolf was even available in their shop as Wolf guard some years ago.

They should have made the option for a set Space Marine Captains of Renown with all of them for a more reasonable price. But well...

That's one heck of a price point. These aren't particularly rare sculpts in the first place, I think all of them can be gotten for less on ebay, at least in the UK (British sellers' postage prices post-Brexit have gone up a lot so the rest of us are perhaps SOL).

The supply does not get to make the demands.

I think it's safe to say the price point was set to match the current price of a standard Space Marine character, which went up to 27€ with the price hike after sitting at 25€ for years.

There's little chance the price was set for any other reason than that GW wants you to believe that's what a run of the mill Marine character is worth, no matter the size, material or quality of the sculpt.

This is my read of it as well.

And the price of a single SM character has been crazy for a while now, and is getting worse.
