Space Marine Heroes 2022 – The Blood Angels Take Charge

Spoiler:

It looks like they're just re-releasing some of the Season 1 Heroes (including Japanese exclusives), but in red...

Spoiler:

But - "There’ll be more Space Marine Heroes to come in the future – this is just Set 1"

Also - really interesting that there's a Primaris on the box but these are First-born.

Original Series 1 had 12 figures, so I'm guessing 2022 Series 2 will have the remaining 6. Wouldn't mind getting another of the captains.

Compared to the original models, some of the painting choices this time are questionable. They definitely don't look as good.

Also, nice to finally get more Space marine heroes. Though the US did have the option to pick up extra heroes en mass thanks to the Barnes and Noble game expansions.

If they re-release the plaguecaster that I spent $100 on, I'll cry. Stupid scalpers and stupider me

but I don't think the terminator with flag was ever released separately. And the Death Guard had a global release

The Terminator Ancient was available in the Global Series 2 release. Don't remember just how common it was, but enough that I got 3 or 4 out of the 3 cases I picked up.

How is it they can tell us the release date of these but not for anything else?

I might pick up one or two. They have interesting poses and I like the heads. Good for kitbashes.

There was a rumour that they're not made in-house by GW, as the sprue looks different to the normal GW ones. If that's true (or they are made in-house, but on a different machine) that might explain why these aren't stuck in a production queue.

Yes, that's right. However, think of this as a movie; you don't hide the face of the A-list talent, not at the price you've paid to have them in your movie. So even though I think it's stupid not to wear the helmet, I do build the squad leaders and characters without the helmet, so they can be distinguished in game.

{Recently reminded of this when given a number of Karist Enclave troops for Maelstrom's Edge. The previous owner built all but one squad leader with helmets, and since the SqL only carries a upgraded version of the basic assault rifle, one can't tell the difference between him and the rankers. I'll give the SqL a different color trim on his shoulderpads should I get around to painting them.}

I can't help but not being to able to unsee the fact that all of the models shown have a light skin colour.

Blood Angels are supposed to be pale and Angelic/Vampiric, so it does sorta fit.

These were originally only for the Japanese hobby market...not a ton of skin tones over there...

Urusei Yatsura, Cerebus the Aardvark, Machiavelli, Plato and Happy Days. So, how was your childhood?

they were originally a partnership with Max Factory in Japan and at least the first series were marketed as 'made in japan' or manufactured by Max Factory

eg https://mykombini.com/en/12277-warhammer-40000-space-marine-heroes-series-1-box-of-24-max-factory-5011921087433.html

but later stuff tended to cite games workshop as the manufacturer so i wonder if max factory got to do a single run then handed the tools over to GW to use as they saw fit as part of the licencing deal

Probably, since the various SM heroes showed up in several boxed games exclusive to Barnes and Noble here in the US.

Good to see these again.

I am pretty sure the Heavy Bolter & Auspex were not in the Global release.
They were only in the Japanese release and the B&N games.

Edit...There were 9 in the Global release.

The Auspex, Close Combat, and Heavy bolter were only in the B&N game in the US.

Do they have Blood Angel details sculpted on or can they be easily used for other armies?

I wasn’t going to mention it, but since someone else did, I’ll weigh in.

The Japanese range did have a diverse range. In fact, these were among the first darker skinned marines we saw painted by gw. And with the blood angels being lighter skinned, it’s a bit jarring

True. It's a fair point. I think they are made under licence. I have one of the blue ones, they're not bad.

I can only see Primaris cover art (good!)?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I believe the manufacturing style is different and I doubt as a consequence they are made in the GW factory. The sprues are the no clippers required variety for toys in various countries. Good for easy assembly, but tricky for plastic flow through the mould if you don't have the experience and machine.

Yeah I think they're designed for the Japanese capsule collection market, so you collect the set and snap fit them together. The fact they're the same scale is probably to get new people into the hobby and simultaneously make something that appeals to people already in the hobby.

And then a further 4 different ones were included in the "Space Marine Adventures" boxed game:

Which I think covered all of the original Japanese releases.
