I put my Militia aside. Once you start converting them, the number of models that has to be done becomes too intimidating. And I decided to wait for the new SA tanks to be released.

Got the next two squads on the workbench (well, work occasional table. The rest of the time it’s a rather confused Soviet Spy whom no amount of evidence will convince him that bit of history is largely over).

Grim Black is taking forever to dry tonight. But the plan for the weekend is get this guys to tabletop tomorrow, and the next and final two squads drybrushed and Grim Black, ready for Sunday.

My game got cancelled, I was going to play the backup guy at a 40k tourney but someone dropped so he has to jump in. But at least I had a look at my models for the first time since the Mk3 Battlegroup dropped.

And that’s 120 infantry done in just 18 days.

I know many are understandably disappointed that MkVI only has five body poses, but it does make painting them pleasingly formulaic. After the first twenty, I knew my brushstrokes and where I wanted the paint to go, speeding things up nicely.

Anyways. Have a cabinet shot.

Other upside of cracking through my painting? I’m now open to getting the odd resin unit.

Nowt too fancy, but stuff like Cenobium Knights and Interemptors. Also definitely gonna be in the market for the Dark Angels Praetor.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

First 500pts done!

Pros: I can paint something besides infantry for a bit
Cons: the next unit on the painting list are my Contekars: 40k CSM levels of trim

Will be back once they're done!

I really like the FW DA models. My concern is whether they are the same scale as the new plastic models. The Deathwing Companions, for example, are noticably shorter than the Mk VI Marines. Probably not an issue with the Cenobium Knights, but the Praetor is probably also a bit of a short-arse. Also - nearly all of them are out of stock online.

just don't field it with a demolisher.

Or field it with a demolisher and reach the needed points for a full army in a hearbeat. Of course side effects include getting tabled exponentially faster if you do so.

Built my first Jetbike, as I’m too tired for the attention span painting requires.

This is a really, really nice kit. Lovely flush fits, the weapons have enough off a peg to be easily swappable (though they could drop out during play. Ooer)

Even the ball joint for the flying stand is super snug.

Will build the other five over the coming week or so, as and when I fancy a hobby break from painting all the things.

Agreed - this is a great kit. The only tricky bit is getting the rider’s arms properly positioned. I don’t think that flying stand stem will last long, so I went for more heavy-duty bases. The bases are quite large, so I added a lot of scenery to them.

Here are a couple of mine - I used Ravenwing bits to give one of them a nuncio-vox and convert another into an Apothecary.

Only bit I had a slight bother with was the ribbed bit atop the hull. It’s a very snug fit (not rhino baseplate snug though) so needed a bit of pressure to pop it in.

But I’m really impressed overall. And hey, now I’ve got 6 Volkite Serpentas to play with.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

I didn't even know you could get plastic jetbikes...

Hmmm, maybe my next purchases once I've got through this initial 2000pts will be a jetbikes for a Clan lord army.

Is a whole bike army worth getting? Would that be fun?

Six of seven Contemptors painted now (bases not withstanding).

Seventh and, for now final, to be done tomorrow. Weekend I start work on the Leviathans and Deredeos. The shelf of Dread may be completed by Monday.

You probably could make an all Jetbike list, or at least one featuring them heavily.

The downside is you can either specialise each squadron, or risk wasting firepower every turn. Their weapon options aren’t poor by any stretch, but as they can’t split fire (few can in Heresy), they’re not terribly complimentary. For instance, Multi-Meltas on such a speedy platform can be deadly, and only a massive idiot wouldn’t fear them. But, that unit is then tied to tank hunting. Great against heavily mechanised opponents, but of limited use against Infantry Hordes. Plasma Cannons are probably the best all round gun, but need to get round behind armour to really worry it. Volkite is Volkite. Heavy Bolters remain fairly crap in Heresy.

I can see them working well in a more general list though. Whilst far from invincible, their speed and firepower should make them priority targets for your opponent, and you can use that to your advantage.

This isn't meant to be a thread about unit effectiveness, but I am interested in this point. I don't plan to use magnets on my jetbike weapons - I plan to commit to one type. I like volkite weapons, because they seem inherently WH30k, but I realise they are fairly hit-and-miss. I've never been much of a fan of plasma weapons. Why are they good on jetbikes?

Plasma Template Spam is useful. Sure with Breaching they’re swingier than before, but the sheer number of hits multiple Plasma Cannons can inflict make them worth it.

And on a Jetbike platform, they can use their speed and the Plasma Cannon’s perfectly reasonable range to threaten unexpected areas of the battlefield, and hit armour from unfavourable facings. And unlike Plasma Cannon Heavy Support Squads can withdraw/redeploy pretty rapidly, and respond to any cheeky deep strikes quite handily.

Jetbikes are a bit maligned at the moment, but depending on what Legion you run, they have their uses. One of the local lads who plays Iron Warriors uses 3 multimelta jetbikes as an absolutely filthy alpha strike unit. It's shocking effective against vehicles or isolated HQs. I've seen him slag land raiders, spartans, kratos', Scorpius' and more all on the 1st turn. He uses them to pick off things like lone HQ's too, namely my Vigilator. Twice. Because I didn't learn my lesson the first time.

For 150pts, they can easily earn their return in points with one good round of shooting and often it's something big and pricey that his opponent generally didn't want to lose so early on. It can also fail spectacularly as well on occasion, but he figures for 150pts, it's a worth while distraction unit if nothing else.

Dark Angels can also get some benefit from them. Dreadwing makes them a touch more survivable and Firewing w/Volkite or plasma helps with the nuking of units with attached HQs. (IE lascannon heavy support squads w/Master of Signal)

It’s done!

All 7 Contemptors done to a tabletop standard.

Sorry to harp on, but as someone who’s always been a reluctant painter but enthusiastic buyer, this is immense for me. 120 infantry, 7 Contemptors. Next up are the heavier Dreads. Which I should thrash out next week.

Have you done the bases yet? Bases make a huge difference - a neat basing job lifts a ‘tabletop standard’ model enormously.
