Overread wrote:Lets not forget the FW stuff back when Old World was around was basically hived off on the separate FW website and mostly still hidden under the whole "with opponents permission" and "rules in expansion books" kind of thing.
For the most part it was cool stuff, but I think less accepted in some ways than the 40K.
Fast forward and now all that is gone away and the FW stuff is getting core rulebook rules and is sold right alongside the regular. This should see it become way more common and popular.
Honestly its a good direction and makes me wonder if next edition of 40K, GW will just put ALL the rules in the codex. The rules are already in the app right alongside for most of the models
Bear in mind that Old World is a Forge World game now, unlike Fantasy of yore. There really shouldn't be a reason not to have old Fantasy units and Forge World units all in the same army list.
That doesn't have to mean anything for 40k which was, is and will remain mainline.
True, but now GW are selling the FW right alongside the regular on the main store and many of the FW models (barring super titans) are appearing in the app alongside regular units.
So whilst the Hiroduels are not in the Codex, they are basically front and centre everywhere else for Tyranids that customers and gamers will interact with.
So I suspect the shift was after the Codex were written that GW decided to just close FW as a separate wing and blend it into the main-line.
Which is why I wonder if we'll see it sneak into latter edition codex or into the next edition.
This assumes GW doesn't replace FW resin with Plastic versions of some models, but that's always an if situation and caan take utterly years to manifest.

I like those goblins though.
Only kit I'd rather have seen more than these brought back would have been the 6th edition night goblin kit, as they are getting more expensive to pick up in the last year. They've jumped from €50 brand new sealed to €70 almost new and I'm not paying that when I want to hack them to pieces for conversions.

To each their own. I've always hated those kits. The proportions were really weird, as they were as tall as humans but their heads were twice as big. I've also found them very much unfun to put together. The later (current AOS) night goblins were much better proportioned and I thought they had more character.

These Orcs are still the ones' that work the same like the 40K boyz, though, aren't they? And the 40K boyz kit is better than their newer brothers from 2 years ago.
GW wants you to pay 35€ for 11 40K boyz, and 60€ for 30 Warhammer boyz that are of a similar quality. That's... okay for me. I don't need 30 of them, though, rather just 10 for some conversions.
I could draw a similar comparison between those goblins and grotz, but the grots kit has quite some variation and if GW hadn't raised their price madly within the last 4 years it'd still be a great kit. Those goblins are rather bland though.

I don't play 40k so I wouldn't know.
All i can say is that most Ironjaw models look leeps and bounds better than the 24 year old orc boys imo, even if their styling isn't really to my liking.
Sure, the prices have been insanely inflated and you get less models for your money in an AOS box (i also believe you need less models in that game compared to warhammer), but I would gladly pay more to get better models.
That being said, i can still get 20 'Gloomspite Gitz', or night goblins to you and me, for the same price as a unit of goblins in the box cost, and i'll take those any day over those ancient normal gobs.
Again, that's just my personal take on it. I also much prefer the new AOS wolfriders to the old ones with the 30 year old plastic wolves, so what do i know?

Partly a question of taste of course. I agree with you on the Wolf riders. And I think GWs old Boars look really terrible, as we can see in the chariot.
Concerning Iron Jawz, though... they replaced the Black orks kit with them and I compared the sprues and IIRC the old kit had more options and more different weapons than the new one and the new one is much more expensive. So, personally, when they announced the new ironjawz I immediately ordered one of the old kits and don't intend to get one of the new ones .
Not sure I wanted to defend the old Goblins because you can get better stuff from Mantic or shieldwolf, but I stand by my statement that it's a decent price - for GW. They want you to pay 40€ for 24 Moria goblins these days, a kit that is now 23 years old and never changed. They were good back then but nowadays don't really hold up. It's not something GW usually cares about though, more often than not older kits get higher price increases than newer ones when GW gets around to price rise again.

New article about the O&G Arcane Journal: https://www.warhammer-community.com/2024/03/18/old-world-almanack-whats-in-the-orc-goblin-tribes-arcane-journal/
In the What's Next? section they acknowledge it's going to take them quite a long time to get all nine factions out. Their current focus is reintroducing the world and setting over the course of nine Arcane Journals, then "Once that's done...who knows?" Given how often the scope of the project has been discussed on here (that it was reduced in scope/always intended to launch as is) this line was interesting:
" Danny: The game has been incredibly well received, and it’s great that there’s so much passion – the scope of the project has grown, so please bear with us."

At their current speed I'd wager 9 factions will take 2 years to get on the market. That assumes one at a time big releases like the Goblins we are getting.
So around 1 faction every 3 months; that's 8 factions over 2 years plus the duel release we got at the start. Give them another year ontop of that for delays, expansions to factions and so forth and I think that fairly much aims us for a 2nd edition in 3 years with new armies/big updates being the focus.

GW is doing their best to fully separate the model lines of Old World and Age of Sigmar.
Which means we sometimes get older kits for OW instead of newer AoS ones even though the AoS would work fine.
Another reason is that clearly a lot of people still have a fondness for old sculpts and there's demand for them so GW is likely also just doing it to fill that niche for a time.
I fully expect we'll see new plastics for OW in the future once the game is out and the armies that they've got set for launch are released to the world.

They are, and if they're made available it means you can also pull off the classic chaos troll conversion (which I've always liked a bit better than the actual chaos troll models).
That is, a river troll head on a stone troll body with some sculpted hair and plasticard bladed weapons.

The weird thing is that those plastic river trolls were warhammer models for YEARS before AOS even started. It's cool for people who like the old ones that they return them, but to me it still feel stupid that even models that were specifically made for warhammer fantasy are not returning to their original game.

This make absolutely no sense. Seeing as the game started as being toted as all new and shiny Cathay and Kislev teases...to being pulled back to 'here's some 30 year old models for a limited bunch of armies for some bogus lore reason we made up + tombs kings who we chucked in for the nostalgia points, and some pity PDF rules so we can still sell you the AoS models'. But now everything is selling out....now the scope of the project has grown again I'm glad I don't have to rely on GW to be in charge of anything more important in my life than plastic toys

What's to stop anyone from buying the plastic River Trolls and just throwing them on 40mm's? You can still use AoS Models in Old World, now granted ranking them might be a challenge even with larger base sizes.
But I'm in agreement Old metal Rivers > current plastic Rivers

The only thing that would stop somebody is their awareness (and how much they actually care) of GW's implied business practice.
If you buy AoS SKUs for your TOW army, from GW's perspective, their AoS line is selling well! Let's invest more into AoS! But oh, the Old World line is not selling well, maybe it's not worth investing into this.

Them announcing that the game is done well enough for them to increase the scope of their plans sounds great, but I hope that doesn't mean Cathay and Kislev?
Obviously them being part of the game would be good, but what I mean is that it would just be odd if it's a case of announcing they'll be including Cathay and Kislev, changing the scope at some point so there's no Cathay and Kislev, and then announcing a scope increase of including Cathay and Kislev. So "changing the scope" to take it back to what they said it would have previously.
I'm hoping that those are already part of their current plans, so the increase is something else...like bringing back the other armies would be great, although I'm not expecting it.

@Rihgu Yeah you aren't wrong there but at least we have options...and as we see from this thread there are those that prefer the newer sculpts and people like me that like the older stuff (for the most part, exceptions with everything of course). River trolls are a great example of this IMO.
I'm now debating buying the old Metal Ogres and using them as Chaos Ogres and pushing the conversions I currently have (Bulls from OK) over to my OK army.

The concept of an "original TOW army" is nonsense. A troll is a troll is a troll. Just like a scratch built warmachine is as good or even better than the default.
Openness to a varied range of model sources results in amazing variety and uniqueness of armies. In any game I play an army consisting of default models in their default roles is the last thing I'd ever want to build.

Well, how am I supposed to know that some slash and letter means sarcastic???
This is an international forum with users for whom English is not a native language. If someone decides to add to it another level of some leet speak or slang they should expect there will be miscommunication :(
I hope Kodos doesn't take offence, but there's a movement in many wargames (that I actively dislike) that says "only dedicated models in their dedicated roles!" so this opinion didn't sound implausible.
