Didn’t hate the first season, though I found it to be pretty bloated.

Thought it was a unique attempt at something original. Never really rated Cara Delevigne as a good actress, but I felt she was adequate in this role. Orlando Bloom was good too. Looking forward to this 2nd(and final) season.

First season felt very much like it was fantasy Ripper Street - which is a really solid concept!

I also felt that its the first time Orlando has really felt like a lead actor in a leading role. Most of the other times I've seen him in a leading role something just felt a touch "off".
Really glad to see the second season coming!

I quite agree. Bloom surprised me, great to see him improve his acting beyond being an Elven Princeling. Mrs. GG and I are looking forward to season 2.

Couldn’t get into it. Mostly because Carla Delavign’s “Oirish” accent.

An accent she can’t do convincingly. And from memory, and from little I saw, no other Fae had - making her misguided attempted all the more baffling and distracting.

I am notoriously weird about Bad Accents though.

I assumed that since she was from England, that she wasn't even putting on an accent. Maybe she's spent too much time in the States and was over compensating.

Shadows and Bone was also good magic steampunk. Any word on a season 2?

Thanks for the reminder! Been meaning to check that show out and forgot about it for the longest time.

S2 looks to be march 16, after a cursory search.

Mrs. GG and I both recommend Shadows and Bone. Very much looking forward to season 2.

English and Irish very different accents - and lots of regional variations

Agreed re Shadow and Bone - most enjoyable

Since it's a fantasy world I wasn't concerned with her accent at all.

It's a funny rule in world building, stuff that doesn't exist can work however you say it does, but stuff that does exist had better be right.

If your heroes ride giant flying dragons you can get away with a lot. If they ride horses you'd better do your research and the horses had better act like horses. Otherwise you break immersion and suspension of disbelief.

So yeah, no one can argue what a Klingon accent should sound like, but if an actor is doing an Irish accent it had better be right.

Accents are funny things because often as not even small nations have multiple regional accents that can sound utterly different.

Take a real cockney accent, a posh British upper class accent and a modern Birmingham accent and all three will sound totally different. They are all British, they are all the same underlaying language, but the accents, local lingo and quirks and such are totally different.

So I can tolerate that a fantasy setting might have an Irish accent unique to the Fey or the setting which is similar but also very different to a real world Irish accent.

It probably makes a difference when it's an accent that someone is intimately familiar with. Either their own, or one they hear quite regularly around them. I'm in Texas, so I have no direct familiarity with what a real Irish accent sounds like, so anything "close enough" would be good enough for my ears. I wouldn't even recognize a so-called proper Texas accent, as there are so many variations at this point, and I've lived here for 38 years.

Discussions like this always make me think of My Fair Lady's "Why Can't the English" song.

"Through the darkness of future past, the magician longs to see.
One chants out between two worlds: Fire, walk with me."
- Twin Peaks
"You listen to me. While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is that I am a naysayer and hatchetman in the fight against violence. I pride myself in taking a punch and I'll gladly take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method... is love. I love you Sheriff Truman." - Twin Peaks

Oh definitely, it depends on what you know.

I remember a well-reviewed movie about a chap with radioactive spider blood and I hated it, just because the final action scene was set on an elevated train in downtown Manhattan that does not exist and looks nothing like any NYC subway.

Had they set the action scene on the 7 train in Queens I'd have been fine.

And I had no problems with their depiction of radioactive spider blood and web slinging teenagers.

But that damn train...

Just finished watching season 1 this weekend and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I was interested in it when it came out but never ended up watching it until the Season 2 trailer reminded me of its existence. While Orlando pretty much gave a one note performance (on purpose), I was actually impressed with the range Cara displayed throughout the season. I'm looking forward to season 2 and hope they don't screw it up.

Ok, please tell me what an Irish accent from a fantasy world should sound like when spoken by a fey.
