I could have sworn scarabs exploded on vehicles in 2nd ed, and yet narry a rule in sight I could find for that in the 2nd ed WD list.

When was the earliest edition a scarab could explode?

I must be going senile...

It was in their first 3rd ed. Chapter Approved list in White Dwarf 230 (UK)

Ah thanks, it was the very next army list a year later....

I must have conflated the two.

I loved that list. So simple, yet effective. You could make a list without looking.

'Do you want the terrible Scarabs or the effectively mandatory Destroyers? Huh?!'

Actually, I made great use out of scarabs. They were fast, and the smallest baseless model ever, which made them insanely easy to hide. My priority targets were Devastator/Long Fang squads, crisis suits, or the like. Getting their points back was never the objective, although when one did explode you could get at least two hits per scarab if you had some luck.

They did become more viable once the max unit size was increased beyond five by the list's update.

My 2000 point list from mid 3rd Ed through 4th Ed was something like:
2 kitted out Lords
2x10 man immortal
4x10 warriors
5 Destroyers
2x10 scarabs

Lords and one squad of immortals would teleport around killing hidden stuff and being annoying, warriors and immortals would blob up the center. Destroyers were fast response support to holes in the line.

2nd Ed Scarabs lowered the AV of enemy tanks they latched on to, and I think they were T8, so a pain to deal with.

I think they also messed with enemy BS?
