Yeah, I'm also getting the defiler eventually, it looks really great and judging from the uploaded instructions it looks fun to build as well.

There is no reason to get it now unless you want to rush it to tournaments as soon as possible.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.

That’s a good question.

I think the Defiler just pips it, as it feels like the original idea tarted up. The Biovore, whilst an improvement for me, is pretty damned different.

I Will pick up a defiler as soon as I can find it in the local store, no hurry. Havnt really bough anything for 40K since the box with new SW, but this got my attention. Hope they get to Vashtor minions soon.

I like the old Defiler too much to give it the win here. Sure, it's dated now, but the design is effective, much more so than the Biovore gorilla was.

With that said, the ultimately best glow-up is the Sister Dialogus.

Same here. I love both models, but the new one fits in much better with the new DG demon engines. I absolutely plan to play both.

I'd probably rate anything Dark Eldar higher, their transition from 3rd edition monstrosities to 5th edition outstanding minis is still unique.
Also, I don't find the new Deffy better than the old one. And given the massive price rise I'd give the win to the old one.

The Defiler, claws down. I'm getting two (hopefully). One to make generic CSM, and the other to make Thousand Sons. Gonna pick up a Space Wolves dreadnought to use as a basing decoration for the second one.

@Lathe: No, the SW dread will not still be on its feet. Or, for that matter, in one piece.

You know me too well...

I had assumed the Space Wolf Dreadnought would have been on its back and the hatch open with the Space Wolf climbing out.

This way, anyone who looks at it would know the honorable Space Wolf is giving the Defiler better odds of not instantly losing in a fight.

I didnt really like the old defiler, but actually find the soulgrinder to be a great model (own 3 of those). Dont expect the soulgrinder to be not-legends in 11th however.

The new Biovore is so different from it's predecessor that I don't even count it as a glowup. It's a straight up redesign.

And I can barely tell the difference between it and the Pyrovore.

The new Defiler kit looks amazing. So many options, good poseability.

I'm surprised and disappointed that the Mutilors don't get any head options.

One of the bigger downgrades in recent times, for sure. Definitely feels like someone in the Studio didn't like the BA.

Soul Grinders are very prominent in the latest Belisarius Cawl novel, so I'm guessing they'll get a new kit once GW decides which codex they're putting Vashtorr into.

I would not necessarily take that for granted, sometimes you see unexpected appearances in such novels.

For example the 2024 Elemental Council novel features old-style Broadsides with shoulder-mounted guns, even though the handheld gun version replaced the shoulder-gun model in 2013.

Yeah books are never a hint at the future model ranges. Heck sometimes the books are super light on descriptions just to get around the fact that a model might change appearance over time.

Other times its just the author adding to the setting with ideas of their own that fit, but which are never going to be made into models; or they are ideas that are floated in the design team, but never mature into models or get sidelined etc...

Some novels feel very heavy on the product placement and very much not shy about being essentially a written commercial, but others are definitely weird and wonderful. Makes me wonder if some authors are under more pressure than others to show off specific stuff.

Edition launch novels tend to do a lot of product placement, but some are a bit elegant in so doing. The second edition AoS launch novel, Soul Wars, gives the first edition Stormcast a good showing too. The fourth edition one, Skaventide, features mainly a cult of curious blind chain-whip Skaven as the antagonists, with no clear miniature counterpart.

from what i understand the product placement books tend to be newer authors who are kept on a tighter leash and have to write based on design briefs presented to them about the characters and context of the setting, etc. The more established authors are the ones given latitude to create their own characters and sub-settings from the ground up.

Which honestly fits - you don't want new to BL/GW authors making stuff up that might not work in the setting and thus require lots of re-writing when a book is at review stage. Meanwhile a more experienced writer within the setting has more chance of coming up with original ideas that fit the setting and tone; plus most likely need that creative outlet in order to not stagnate as a writer in general.
