But which one first? Dune 3 will probably be sadder, but Doomsday might be a bit of a disappointment…

Doomsday comes out first. So, probably that one.

I happened to take a look at the box office for two recent, similar looking movies to compare.

They Will Kill You
vs.
Ready or Not 2

Interestingly, the sequel movie is out-performing the original film by almost 2:1.

They Will Kill You- 9.1 Million with a 3rd place opeign weekend. This is a disaster as it cost 20 million to make.

Meanwhile, Ready or Not 2 has made 20 Million is box office, and is about on par with the first. The first was considered a surprise hit. Also, this sequel had a budget of $14 Million so has all ready made its money back.

Just a quick glance seems to indicate that sequels have legs.... which is not surprise why Hollywood keeps focusing on them.

Ill likely see all 3 - Avengers, Dune.3, & Jumanji.
Violent Night II as well.
Violent Night - theatre, definitely before Christmas
Avengers - theater, ASAP
Dune - likely in theatre a few days later, depends upon other people's schedules.
Jumanji - theatre, likely on New Years Eve.

They Will Kill You had the bad luck to come out second of the pair. It’s too close in time and subject to Ready or Not: Here I Come.

It probably helps that Samara Weaving is an ethereal beauty and crushed it in the original film.

Also, neither is the sort of film I feel I’d necessarily have to see in the cinema. I prefer home watching for horror, as the big screen and shudder presence of other smelly hoomans don’t really add anything for me.

Doomsday? Yes. Dune 3? Possibly. Not sure due to Chalomet’s Paul being a right whiney little goit. Mando and Grogu? Absolutely.

There the sound and screen add necessaries to the overall experience. Horror? Much less so.

Yeah, and marketing for Ready or Not 2 seemed to be everywhere on my socials.

And admittedly having not seen it yet so probably talking out of my ass, the trailer for They Will Kill You seemed to show the entire movie, which is one of those sort of self defeating things that some studios do with trailers.

They Will Kill You is actually a fun B movie. Went to see it in Maidstone and was a fun b movie affair with an early twist. The plot is sufficient, the action rarely bother stopping and the cheesy camerawork appropriate to the topic. Preferred it to ready or not episode one.

I feel almost the opposite. I go to theaters for the audience experience, and horror movies tend to have great audience reactions. A bloody action-horror movie is sure to have all kinds of gasps, nervous chuckles, that occasional “Ohh!!”, and a big cheer at the climactic moment. Those make the experience memorable for me.

I agree, but audience reactions are very tough to find now-a-days. Everyone seems to watch everything in silence, even movies that really cry-out for a reaction.

It didn't. But don't worry, what it didn't show isn't worth the tkt price.

As if there aren’t enough bombs being dropped in the Middle East right now, Saudi Arabia stealthily comes through with Desert Warrior, an Anthony Mackie led historical “epic” tracking to be one of the biggest bombs in movie history.

$150million+ budget, with less than half a million in its opening weekend take. It will be lucky to hit $3 million in the US by most estimates. Overseas viewers might give it a little jolt, but it seems DOA everywhere.

This is the first I've heard of Desert Warrior. Good job marketing team.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

I’ll post the trailer in the appropriate thread to boost awareness and do some grassroots marketing. Perhaps the Saudi’s will mail me a check!

Just watched the trailer you posted, and I can’t believe this the first I’m hearing of this film, because it’s exactly the kind of thing that the algorithm should be feeding me. Very poor job on marketing, although they’ve made it look like the blandest of bland “hero’s journey” type affair.

I wanted to go see Bob Odenkirk's Normal but missed it before it left theatres. I was intrigued by it being set in Minnesota, as a former Minnesotan myself.

Looks like the bduget was aroud $25M and it scored about $45.3 Million at the box office, so nothing fancy.

I expect it to hit streaming pretty fast though.

I saw a few ads for desert warrior while my script blocker was down because Youtube increasingly says 'don't use our website, we'll slap 3 minutes of ads on a two minute video' and I refused to go see it out of spite.

Which was admittedly an easy decision because Desert Warrior just looks bland :/

Yeah, terrible title.

However the scene with the war elephants peaked my interest a bit.

So, Mother's Day weekend is over, so let's take look at the Box Office......

1. Devil Wears Prada 2- 43M North America
2. Mortal Kombat II- 40M North America
3. Michael- $36 M North America
4. Sheep Detectives- 15.9 M North America

The sequels won the weekend. Think about that the next time we begrudge Hollywood for only making sequels.

Prada 2 did more business than the first version, and is on track to be the biggest Female-driven movie since Barbie.

MKII doubled what MKI did in its opening weekend in North America. However, that was during the Pandemic IIRC.

If you included International numbers, most of these films doubled their take.

So, this is going to be one of those weekends that pops up in box office discussion for years. In some ways it’s behaving like a pre-pandemic box office weekend and 2026 looks to be shaping up as the best box office year post pandemic.

Mandolorian and Grogu is not the reason why, although it seems to be doing better than the “Star Wars is dead” predictions.

Michael has had an incredible hold week after week and will likely hit $1 billion.

Passenger is making decent “Blumhouse slop” box office despite terrible reviews, terrible ads, and perhaps the worst release date for a small-budget horror movie in memory.

The Sheep Detectives had a low opening, but word of mouth has kept them raking about $1 million per week day, which would be the incredible indie Word of Mouth hit everyone was talking about if not for…

Obsession. Obsession is the real story. Most horror movies have a big drop from one weekend to the next. Smash hit Sinners only dropped 5% in its second weekend, making it a phenomenon. Obsession’s second weekend box office is 30% higher than its opening weekend. It looks like it’s going to let out between $100 million and $150 million, domestically. Off a $750,000 budget. If you’re interested how movies hit with the audience, this is the one to watch.

On Mando & Grogu? First, an anecdote.

I shelled out for a 4DX screening. I had a whale of a time, and really enjoyed it.

It was the second, maybe third screening in that specific screen room, and it was busier than I can recall most recent movies being. Not that I keep notes. But for the most expensive way to view it? It was close to a full audience.

Anecdote ends.

Of course opening day is going to perform the best. Its opening day on a *checks* actually fairly reasonable for its genre and pedigree budget.

But as a child of the 90’s in the UK, when it took Effing Forever for a film to arrive on home media? I’m still left wondering in these financially tighter times whether D+ is hobbling Disney’s Cinema chances.

I mean, if it wasn’t for my fancy membership? The 4DX screening would’ve cost me £25 or so. Which is a lot, even just for not-so-little-and -not-that-old-me. Extend that to the group I saw coming in of probably around 15 adults and kids?

Why wouldn’t you just bide your time and wait for it to debut on D+? Especially as in terms of streaming platforms, it really doesn’t care that much if you share your account deets with friends.

I don't know about other places but around here The Sheep Detectives had very limited screenings with it having only a few showings a day and never in the bigger screens in the theater.
