Very old and still just an Imperial theory in WD 118 and Waaaagh! The Orks (1989 and 1990 respectively). It pops up from time to time because, y'know got to keep some humour in Orks.

But as with so much older background in the age of the Internet, theory becomes fact because sources never get looked at.

I think you'll have to re read your sources then, because the snotling entry on waargh the Orks states it as fact rather than as a theory.

That states that Orks both pre-date and post-date brain boyz, as they were just a temporary sub-caste of Orks - it does not support the notion that the brain boyz are the lost creators; that came later. This snippet is fully compatible with later information.

The first time you see any suggestions that the brainboyz created the orks was in 2007, and this time actually as a legend and theory rather than 3rd person fact.

In 2nd ed they were simply the 3rd caste, brains, warriors and slaves.

The argument was whether snotlings had ever been definitely described as degenerative brain Boyz, which they have. They have also been described as MAYBE brainboyz according to the imperium..both of which can be true, because one is omniscient fact and the other is in universe theorising.

What the brain Boyz actually were, is still up for debate. But the snotlings were at least once definitively described as being them.

EDIT: although technically nothing has actually contradicted that first statement. So at best you can say that brain Boyz defiantly are snotlings that aite fungus, while the legends about what a brainboyz is have changed over the years.

In one of the recent Tau novels, Aun'va says the Earth Caste have examined the Orks and concluded that the Snotlings are the degenerate "Ethereal" caste based on genetic examination.

In terms of human civilisations? The Imperium itself is a wildly diverse coalition of worlds.

The Adeptus Mechanicus, and its sovereign Forgeworlds are an empire unto itself. And it has alliances with Space Marine Chapters and Knight Worlds. Plus other holdings.

Outside of that? Life and civilisation varies wildly. A Primitive World is completely different from an Industrial World, as are Hive Worlds. Each world will have its own monetary system and even language - High Gothic essentially being the Lingua Franca of the Higher Ups. Everyone else will speak whatever language or languages have evolved on the world.

Provided the tithe is met, and the Ecclesiarchy are happy enough with your world’s take on the Imperial Faith? You’re pretty much left to get on with it.

So there are indeed multiple human civilisations within the galaxy. They just tend to be part of the wider Imperium.

Gorkamorka has humans living on it... and quite well (all things considered).

Technically, Gorkamorka doesn't have anything living on it now.
