GW is doing a giveaway for a pile of models.

https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/articles/m5xrhsrw/remember-this/

All you have to do is log into their website to enter. Great.

The giveaway is nostalgia themed, they are repeating something they did in 1995. But look closely at those images:

https://assets.warhammer-community.com/50-year-giveaway-warcom1-xv4fu1frdg.jpg

https://assets.warhammer-community.com/50-year-giveaway-warcom2-(2)-bwmq3wd649.jpg

Between the big box games and the regiment / blister boxes, my back of the envelope math reveals the 1995 photo contains about 3,300 miniatures plus a ton of White Dwarf and Epic scale stuff. Wild guess, but I would put the value at £15,000 (or £36,750 adjusted for inflation.

OTOH, the newer photo features a number of single-model boxes, many combat patrols, and some big box games. My estimate for the 2025 photo is 800 - 1000 miniatures and some plushies. Wild guess, but I would put the value at £3,500-4,000 retail today.

In 1995, GW's market cap was around $142M USD. Right now, it's sitting at $7.05B USD. That's a 4,865% nominal increase without adjustments for inflation or anything. The percentage change in prize value has gone down ~89% despite the phenomenal growth of the company.

Giveaways are pure expressions of love from a company to it's customers to celebrate their enthusiasm and success. GW loves players 89% less than they did in 1995 and are cheering about it all over Warcom.

Their business model has also changed. in 1995 they loved people who converted out of a giant bits box that may not be fully their stuff, and most of what you bought was the blister pack. Now they want you to buy one or two squad boxes to make a squad instead of 4 Scout Blisters to make a Scout Squad.

Giveaways are advertising and customer development. You think McDonalds does Monopoly out of love for their customer? They do it to drive business. GW is going to get web traffic and who knowns how much Personal Information as people register and so on.

You know what that remaining +11% of value is though?
Spoiler:
The chance to win 11% more than you've been able to for the past 30 years.

I know it's not love, but the going rate for transactional sex is usually a lot more than 'sign in to an account you already have'.

For what it's worth I had a look at the original reader survey giveaway (WD184), and it says "almost £3,000 worth". (Specifically it was one of every boxed game, book, and miniatures boxed set currently sold.)

Again Marketing 101: what makes you think this is about people logging in with an account they already have? Sure they're happy to see potentially lapsed customers log in, but the real "profit" in this giveaway are the new signups. More people for the email blasts about the latest sale and new release. They're giving that haul away to one person in exchange for who knows how many new people handing over their personal information. Edit to Add: Its basically a grocery store loss leader with extra steps.

Yeah yeah, if you're not paying for the product you are the product, I'm sure GW have crunched the numbers and made darned sure they're coming out ahead on this per whatever monetary value they assign to sign-ups and sign-ins and marketing buzz. I work in direct contact with corporate marketing (thankfully not in a capacity where they expect me to pretend to be interested in it), so you won't find me wanting in cynicism, but I'm not going to get my hackles up over this.

Also, despite how many places I've changed my name, and that my Warhammer account seems to have my current name on it, they keep using my old one... :(

You don't need to guess on the value of this comp. They have given the full list, and an estimated value of just over £5k. See my N&R thread for details.

https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/817863.page

Hah! and the full resolution page explicitly states that the original giveaway was £3k worth of stuff.

I'm not really seeing the moral outrage here

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The Bank of England's inflation calculator suggests that £3k in 1995 would be worth about £6k now, so arguably the prize fund value is a little undercooked, but its just a friendly giveaway after all, and £5k is a decent prize fund for toys.

Also Also, given the content of WD these days, I'd prefer to win the merch than the mags.

Hello new best friend.

In all seriousness, I wish everyone the best of luck with the draw.

Despite people's dour corporate cynicism, someone's going to get a boat load of free models this Christmas and be super Happy, we can be glad about that without treating GW like heroes for it.

To be fair, the last Stormcast I model I got wound up being converted into a Chaos Lord.

I’d assume that GW is going to inform the winner before a giant box shows up on the doorstep. You should have plenty of time to get your story straight to avoid being murdered.

Now if you start with things like “Since I don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on the stuff I won, I can instead spend it on these other toys” you probably deserve a light stabbing. But that’s on you.

If you are truly smart, you can buy that Titan you've always wanted and slip that into the pallet of stuff you've won.

Oh... this extra thousand dollars? Those were tariffs I had to pay on this stuff I won...
