Subject: Dakka Painting Challenge Round 131 January 2026: Shiny New Toy
|
 |
The Marine Standing Behind Marneus Calgar
|
Welcome all to the 131st round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.
This topic this month is the Shiny New Toy - something fresh from under the Christmas tree? Ork boss with a swanky new boomdakka? Tanks rolling fresh off the assembly line? New captives for the dark gods or archon? Parade ready fresh recruits? Your entry should be something new. Or shiny. Polished chrome and steel. Or a toy. As always you can let the topic be your muse and take it away, but make sure the results tie back to the theme.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of January and will end at midnight EST on January 30th. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

I'm in. This is the only "named character" mini I've ever bought and is perhaps my favorite mini of all time. It's finally time to conquer my fears of screwing it up and put some paint on her.

I originally hadn't intended on joining this month, but I was able to prime some of my shiny new toys yesterday. I almost finished painting one today since I have off from work:
I intend on doing a review on my Big Fantasy Epic blog this weekend and I'm trying to get a few painted by Saturday night. Might as well enter 'em here while I'm at it
Stay tuned.

Here's my entry, Lord Inquisitor Hesh on his shiny new toy - an antiquated Imperial hoverboard. He's my Lord Solar Leontus proxy and the last unpainted model of my imperial guard army.
It's an awful photo I'll take nice ones when he's all painted up!

So I finished my homework early this month!
I'm pretty happy with how he turned out - I experimented with metallics on his tunic, trying to go for a silk sherwani style, and it's the first time I've ever painted a pupil on a mini!
He was difficult to photograph in my usual lighting setup (morning sun on my nerd room floor), so I might try and see if I can take some better photographs before the end of the month.
Good luck everyone 8-)

So I need some feedback. First test Necron done. Scheme is not finalized. Looking for that classic look, and table-top battle ready. I need to push out a silver tide for my vision of the army, and that’s not going to happen with a lot of steps/highlighting. So willing to make some quality cuts to keep it quick and easy.
Basecoat white
Leadbelcher over almost everything (barring tubes and wires)
Black Templar on the gun. (bayonet left bare)
Tesseract glow in gun recesses, gun tube thing.
Exposed wires in red, and eyes.
Cable conduits in deadly nightshade
Nuln oil wash over non-gun parts
Pick out pistons, gun coils, chest icon in brighter silver.
Done?
The problem is all the metal details, and not wanting to be pure monochrome. Base will probably be the same green grass bases as my eldar/undead.
I didn’t clean up the tube on the gun before the green. So there is a little slop showing through the tube. Also wondering if I want to pick out the circles on the gun barrel before the green so they pop a little brighter. I think on larger guns this might be required.
Red eyes or green?
Are there enough differences in the metals? I thought maybe going for my normal marine gun scheme for the gauss rifle, which is black with a heavy leadbelcher drybrush. I could have also included it in the nuln oil wash, but had already put the green down. Also the coils on the gun above the grip I just hit with the light silver, green them?
This guy just has an unpowered stabby bit on his gun, but at some point I’m going to have to work out the nasty phase blade things. Might just go with my gloss green power swords.

Definitely liking the red eyes; gives them a T100 look which is hard to knock.
I think overall the scheme you’re running seems functional and will work great with a few units of these things trampling around. It’s an efficient painting approach for large numbers to be sure.
One question though… what is the yellow tube? I am not a fan… it doesn’t ‘fit’ with the rest of the mini.
Also, are you hand painting the base coat or using a rattlecan/airbrush. I would be super tempted to mix a base black with dark purple around 50/50 and then drybrush the leadbelcher over the lot leaving the purple/black in shadows. That would deepen the shadows and give the overall minis an even more striking appearance without anything in the way of real additional effort. I’m talking black with a HINT of purple though… super super dark.
Oh, and, while I’m firing around ideas and feedback… I would leave the plain black wash in weapons etc

Simple ways to get a bit more color on a Necron without adding different steps are green glow in the rib recesses and a colored sternum and icon. Gold and black for instance. If you want expanded inner glow, the end of the plating on the forearms and lower legs might be good spots, as well as the neck. In case just the rib cage looks too localized for your taste.
I think blue and yellow in addition to green on the gun might be overdoing it a little, especially with the rest of the model so bare that it doesn't take much to draw attention. One less color might be a better choice, without losing the spot color effect. Something to consider is that other Necrons may have cables on or leading to their bodies, so think ahead how you want to paint them. Not everything is as simple as a Warrior.

I’m not a huge fan of the yellow tube thing myself, but a lot of necron pics have it the same color as the gauss effect, so I went with it. Might go red instead.
I rattlecan white, and then hand paint the leadbelcher on with a fuzzy stick. Don’t own an airbrush. Also, I try to keep all the paint straight from the pot without mixing. For consistency (and laziness), plus I tend to drift in and out of secondary armies, so I don’t want to make a batch and have it run dry next time I get around. Not a bad idea, but I don’t think it would fit my style of work.
The black templar contrast paint works more like a glaze then a shade (which is what I use the Nuln Oil for) GW makes a different one that covers a bit darker. Not sure I want to take the gun that far black.

I was not planning on going for inner glow. It might be a good way to make HQs stand out though. The gun blocks the view, but the warrior has some blue and red wires/conduits hanging out like guts from his torso. So there are colors are not just on the gun. I tried some of the green glow on the chest emblem but didn’t like how it looked, so painted over. Maybe a brass accent? But then again, this guy is a disposable soulless warrior. I might just want to keep him plain to set the base of the army’s look
I was thinking of using some white accent color if I get around to elite units. And the blackstone bits are going to be black with some form of green edge highlights. I’ll figure those out when I get there. HQs will get some gold and/or brass.
I really should take a look at the rest of the models and see how I want to paint up the ranks, and if things more prominent on them need to be echoed on these guys.
Thanks!

+1 here for a black base instead of white; it provides more contrast with the silver without any extra effort and you might even be able to paint only the proud metal surfaces (kind of like drybrushing) and possibly even skip the wash step.

I don't think you need to change too much here to get him on point. I'd suggest finishing off the base before you make any drastic decisions - they go a long way to helping a mini feel complete and might help you pinpoint one or two extra areas you want to tweak or make pop against the silver tide.

Unfortunately half of the necrons are already based coated white. So while I could go back and re-prime them all black, or just basecoat them all black before building them up again, I’m going to take the lazy way out. And going black might darken them up more then I’d like. I use silver over black a lot for marine guns and the like, and it does work well. WIP 2 So I hit the little nubs in the barrel with bright silver, and then hit em with the glow, as well as the coils. Did the tube in red. Hit the chest symbol with a brown wash to bronze it up a little. I plan on going over the gun with a deeper black contrast paint, but that reqires a trip to the store. Edit: once I get him where I want him I’ll stick him in my flock tubs to see how he looks based. Will get some comparison pics. Probably green grass , but maybe snow.
