I do wonder if the somewhat less fantastical recent IG designs are GW leaning into the popularity of stuff like Bolt Action?

I mean, there’s always been a market for WW2 models, and indeed games for them. Well, I say always. Clearly not before the war, because that would be a temporal paradox.

But it seems Bolt Action, which I believe to be really well regarded, is the first Mass Market take that’s shown staying power, and so better harnessed the underlying popularity.

GW of course can’t compete in that realm. But they can create Bait for some cross pollination. Because even if it’s just folks buying a kit or two for painting and display? It’s all money in the till.

I know that 1/48 and 1/56 scale stuff can look a bit small on a 40k battlefield, so it'll be be nice when we can see a comparison pic.

Folks might also want to check 1/35 models which I find look about right.

An understatement to put it mildly.

The BA kits are 1/56 and tiny compared to 40K models. Modern 40K stuff is somewhere between heroic 28mm and heroic 32mm, and historic 1/56 models just look wrong in that context.

1/35 might work out, as long as you replace the weapons with bits from actual 40K kits - 40K weapons are comically oversized.

Wargames Atlantic have their new truck/APC thing as part of "The Damned"

And as always there's heaps of 3D prints, some can be found that are free (legitimately). I quite like printing FDM vehicles, the layer lines aren't a bother with the 3ft rule.

It's interesting just how bare bones the rules are for the centaur in 40k, it's basically purely a mobile light bunker for firing out of. I don't really like the model (too straight up WW2 for my tastes) but I kind of still want one, maybe print off some more gothic tracks for it then use in OPR.

This genuinely pleasantly surprised me. In an era where units feel almost like MTG cards, it's a refreshingly honest piece of metal and rubber.

As opposed to the mini-tank it released alongside, which can Fire and Fade for some reason.

Honestly my biggest question is why did the Imperial Guard need a new infantry transport of all things. Don't they have like 5 now?! Those being the chimera, a super heavy transport, a valkyrie, the taurox and now this. Some factions only have 1 or 2 transports. Does imperial guard need at least 5? Seriously are they going to have a tank for transporting tanks or a plane that transports vehicles now?

Well, I think you can transport a Cyclops demolition vehicle in a Chimera/Valkyrie, so the tank in a tank thing does technically exist.

7 right now before the Centaur but very few people use the three super heavies (Banehammer, Doomhammer and Stormlord; the one your probably thinking of) outside of theme lists, Aircraft have been gimped this entire edition with that unlikely to change in 11 and a lot of people are speculating that the Centaur is meant as a replacement for the Taurox and potentially the Taurox prime as well. Also I'm pretty sure the Space Marines have planes that can transport Dreadnaughts already.

How dare you forget the CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT.
Also, IIRC the old Capitol Imperialis and the legs of some of the larger Imperial Titans are canonically capable of transporting entire armored units.
As to whether we need them...eh? We're certainly not lacking for vehicles (that is a full half of Our Thing as the Guard). That said, it's kind of nice having a basic Trukk-equivalent, since all our other transports have to pay extra for bigger guns and armor when we might just want a cheap battle-taxi to get troops from point A to point B in relative comfort.

The Chimera was always overgunned for a transport and cost more than the dudes it was carrying. I'm totally cool with a cheap disposable Rhino type transport for our squishy guys.

And it actually looks pretty good.

Now if they'd just add a trailer so it can carry 20...

It isn't about need. It's about want.

There 215 items in the shop all Space Marines tab of the store; there are 66 for the Imperial Guard. Let them have something shiny FFS. Non marine factions shouldn't have to go through a needs assessment to get new units when marines are working on, what, Primaris + Oldmark armour variants now?

I'd LOVE to see 10-15 kit releases for every other faction before I see a single new Marine product, and no matter what I think of any of those releases, all of them will be "More Necessary" than ANYTHING new that could be released for marines.

If you forgot i play Dark Eldar and we have about half of what most old factions get. I'm only saying Guard don't need more transports. I'm not saying Guard don't need more units.

I picked up this kit, as I had a spare Basilisk hull in my bits box. The kits' track/wheel piece is slightly narrower and shorter than the Chimera tracks. I'm going to narrow the hull by about 2mm as well and add some bench seating behind the cab .

I suspect it's more an attempt to make the Guard more technically and physically distinct from Marines - Marines get the high tech, ugly floaty tanks, while Guard get reskinned WWII vehicles.

A cynic might also point out that a new Guard transport vehicle can make the Chimera a less interesting purchase, right when WGA are releasing a significantly cheaper alternative model.

There's no way GW cares what WGA are doing or about trying to undercut their market in the most insignificant way imaginable.

People have been wanting IG halftracks and armoured cars for yonks, they're just responding to that I'm sure.

If GW wanted to respond to the popularity of Bolt Action they'd make a WW focused tank game.

They are big enough that they could "just do that" to compete if they really felt like it was a viable threat to their growth.

I agree this is just GW doing more WW inspired units in the guard and expanding them with things people have asked for and which appear in lore and so forth. They are bit less fantastical, but GW has done that before with the Guard. Heck the old metal Epic 40K Guard tanks came with camo nets, ammo boxes - the lot. They honestly are more detailed than the larger plastic tank kit in many ways and very "realistic tank" inspired

The fantasy of the Guard has always been that WW1/2 era army thrust into the super-future.

Regarding "Guard already has so many transports"
=> As far as I see we currently have only 2.5 (Chimera, Taurox, Taurox Prime) ground based and one flyer (Valkyrie) that are neither legends nor Lords of War. And at least around where I am the Taurox is... not loved to put it diplomatically.

Apart from that I still see aestetically as well as playwise some room for a real barebones softskin transport like a large jeep or light to medium truck. Something unarmored, unarmed but really cheap, just to bring a bunch of dudes from A to be fast. The centaur RSV is still to armored for this role and aestetic.
But that is my taste, I doubt GW will bring something like that.
