I think it's the latter, they definitely said they were holding some back for stores when I was in there the other week.

Alchemist, Darksphere, Wayland and GW themselves are all still allowing preorders in the UK.
I'm still curious to see if my prediction of some Saturnine-style discounts will materialise after release, as third-party stores try to shift all these boxes.
This 40k set no longer has the cool big book which is jammed packed with fluff and art, which is usually a big selling point to me for even picking them up in the first place.
That was a big book because it was a combination of lore and the rulebook though. This set still has both of those things, it's just split into 2 books now with the lore side being the Operation Imperator book.
Not really the same. The Operation Imperator book appeared to be a campaign book dedicated to this box/Armageddon only.
I like the big edition books, that are full of fluff, art, fold out maps, new art, where the whole edition/game/universe is as a whole. That to me was a perk of forking out for one of these big boxes. I'd never buy a big book like that separately when the rules are outdated within a week, they are too expensive separately, but I do love new art, fluff etc. that comes with a new edition. Being bundled in a big box made it feel like part of the 'value' of coming alongside new models.
A smaller dedicated campaign book, not so much. I'm very unlikely to ever set my games on Armageddon when my group have been playing our own campaigns/planets/corner of the 40k universe for over 30 years. A new dedicated campaign book is a one time flick through, and then would sit on the shelf forever more. I still pull down older big rule books and read through them/check out the art on a rainy afternoon/when I'm not paying attention at work when they are years out of date.

It isn't just that. Armageddon is obviously a significant part of it as that's the theming of the edition, but according to the store description there's "a broader look at the Warhammer 40,000 setting, including every faction vying for control of the galaxy".
It's 114 page of lore. Some of the big rulebooks have had more than that with closer to 150 - 200 pages, but from what I can tell some have also been around 100 - 150 pages, so it's not that much of a discrepancy overall.

Good for planning those conversions ahead of launch!
Some of the sprues were out on the table at my local GW as the manager was building his set for the store. Got a chance to look at them. Things I noted was that the chin gun for the speeder should be easy to magnetize, and a lot of the arms on the VV are simple pegs on otherwise flat torso connections. So a simple clip of a peg and any arm will fit. And if you just push fit for now, it can be easily pulled off and swapped/maged later. Not every guy, but enough to be able to add new gear if options unlock in the full kit.

So, listings are already up on Ebay, the rules portion- cards, books, everything- is going for around £30-40, so if that all thats interesting anyone for now, might be worth a look. The models are all being sold off at shockingly fair prices so far, around 10 to 15 each per character, units around the 20 mark.

Thanks for that as I have zero interest in any of the models, but would love those dumb cards I apparently need to play the game.

FWIW there was a rumour floating around that the next preorder will be for the standalone rulebook, card decks, & terrain footprints. That puts them in stores a week after Armageddon.
Should be confirmed in a few hours from now.

While the initial glut of boxes being broken up is still working though e-bay, it’s still probably worth checking there. GW might be selling them individually soon (plus the non-launch starters at some point) but getting them direct from the source is going to be more expensive.

Don't GW normally have no additional pre-orders during a new edition? So I'm not expecting to see anything this weekend new since its all focus on the new boxed set
Yes, two-week preorder, shouldn't be anything next week. Standalone book going up for preorder in 2 weeks when the launch box is out makes sense though, seems plausible.

The cards are selling for over assumed rrp atm.

Makes sense. Supply and demand and all that. The rules are online for free. If you don’t care about the campaign stuff, the second deck and other book are deadweight. If you want to play 11th and don’t care for the armies in the box, the deck is the one thing in the box you care about. You and most every other non-marine, non-ork player in the world. So that’s going to sell for a premium.

I'll be converting all the SM to fit in with my Space Wolves army. I wish the SM Ancient had less moulded detail on his banner like the Banner Nob, which is a great model. If I could have one thing the design team could've done differently, it would have been to leave off the massive eagle, and have it be a water transfer.
Many of the SM Ancient kits are like this, It would be nice if they included a nice plain banner to let hobbyist bring more variety to their armies, without the pain of carefully removing unwanted details. Not a deal breaker by any means.

It's early days, people are grabbing for the hot new thing and there's probably a fair deal of panic buying too. As more people get their box sets and start splitting them up, you'll see a lot more card decks flood eBay and the price will start to fall to something more reasonable. Just wait it out for a bit.

I have a feeling all the Armageddon box contents will be easily available from ebay for a long time to come. If you want to grab any of this stuff for cheap, dont get tempted to grab anything early

Yeah, I really dislike sculpted banners as well. Even when painted they just look a bit wrong, as the cloth should be flat. But unfortunately most GW's banners are like this these days. I have smoothed some, but it is a lot of work.
The burning pits of Hades, also known as Sweden in summer
Those sculpted details really are a pain. The detail is so shallow and soft it's really hard to get any definition.
On banners that are heavily deformed by wind, I get why they do them, as banner decals wouldn't readily work on such surfaces (it'd look very unnatural if the cloth was bending 45 degrees right due to the wind but the symbol is perfectly straight). I still have issues with it though.
Although I am a newer player (I've only been in the hobby for about three months ), I think this is a pretty good boxed set. Sure, the Space Marines could have a little bit more stuff but that's why I have a resin 3D printer so I can print little things like Purity seals and skulls out for them. The addition of so many character models actually is nice, and breaking down the price from many retailers at $250, it comes down to about $4 a figure, taking into account all the character models and vehicles!
I like the Orcs in this set a lot more than the ones that came out in 2021. Not that those models were bad, but I like the heads on these a lot more, as they are more reminiscent of the stuff they did for sets like assault on black reach.
The Gretchen are one step forward and one step back in my opinion ( although that's mainly because I like goofy faces on my models, and those Gretchen had hand-sculpted faces)
I love the new ATST-like vehicle; it is also very reminiscent of a squig, which is another thing I really like.

Yeah right now most of the selling are scalpers/stores splitting stock they hope to get. Give it until launch week and the prices will come down as the market floods with stock and people just wanting to get rid of excess. Also note that FB will often have lower prices now and then as more independent trading went to FB over ebay (its why ebay have been slashing fees and such because they couldn't compete with free FB market listings)

Yeah, for sure. That's how I got a bunch of second-edition miniatures for about $2 a mini. If it were on eBay, it would have been $80 to $90 total instead of $30.

Funny enough Element still saying out of stock since this morning. Makes you wonder whats happening there and how not reliable they have become when shopping for any new 40k box sets online.
Yeah element, which is my local and fave shop by far seems to be doing stuff different with big boxes, a few times they didn’t even sell some on line or sold out super quick, but in store they have a really good range. I know the online warehouse isn’t connect to the main shop in Stockport anymore.

You can download the rulebook today if you want to and the datasheets and whatnot will be available to all at the same time. We don't know yet what the situation with the cards will / won't be but even if they're only in armageddon and they're essential that still means anyone who *knows someone with a set* will be able to play as they aren't 1 per player.

The missions are mandatory given we have the core rules and a mission isn't in them, but I'm happy that you are happy that waiting 2-3 weeks at the mercy of someone who bought a launch box is an acceptable outcome.

I guess I'll just have to content myself with the 1000's of missions from the 10 previous editions, White Dwarf, Codexes, GDW magazines, campaign books, etc. that will all work perfectly fine with the new edition with a few minimal updates.
EDIT: According to the preview article, we should be getting the updated faction rules over the next week too.

Colour me surprised, book and cards are in fact up for preorder next week. It's a bit odd that Armageddon is a 2 weeker but the solus book and cards are going to hit stores the same week.

I know right, it's almost like I said - they dont want the new edition to be softlocked to those who bought the box.
