So I was posting in this thread at TMP yesterday, and looking at the WM/Hordes forum here today about the new casters, and I was wondering about quantity. Now, we know this hobby tends to, shall we say, encourage certain OCD behaviors: squirreling away figures, bits, etc. for that project we're going to get to someday. But how much is too much? How many armies do you have? How many different scales, game systems, basing systems, etc.? How many projects are on your table? When do you know you've gone over the deep end? When do you start selling things off, scaling back the lead mountain?

I struggle with this (as you can see in my post from the TMP thread). I try to keep ideas in the hopper for a while before I act on them, but sometimes that impulse buy just gets the better of me. It's even worse when it comes to getting rid of stuff. While I purge every now and again, I still sometimes feel like I've got way too many armies, especially for 40k, which I'm not really playing lately, but don't know how to get rid of the figs for fear I'll get back in and regret it...

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

At my peak about 4 years ago, I had the models for 8 separate 40K armies and 5 Fantasy armies. Of those 13 armies, only 3 or so were actually playable. The rest were in various states of assembly and painting (most hadn't even gotten close to the painting stage). I also had two Blood Bowl teams, 3 Mordheim Warbands, and a Necro gang.

After my wife got pregnant, I started paring down. Now with a 2-year old in the house and a second on the way, my time for the hobby has been greatly reduced. I -want- to spend the time with my wife and kids, but I also want to keep dabbling in the hobby, so I've got one active army I'm working on and one on the back burner. It seems to be a pretty good amount for the time I have these days.

Well right now I have 2-3ish 40K Armies, I only really count two because I quit Chaos I just still have the figures. And I also have 2 fantasy armies, But I recently gave up tomb kings for either a bit or good to focus on an army I like. So I figure 2 armies for the game that you are into the most and 1 for the other game isn't all that bad.

In the now, I'm normally working on three projects
A fantasy type (Mordheim or Warmachine) a Sci-fi (40k or Void) and always terrain
I find I get more done by having something to bounce to if I'm sick of working on one thing

I almost never sell things off...
For stuff I'm not going to get to soon (ie a year or so)....
I'm a fan of the 'cold storage' method:
sit down and think about what your going to work on in the next year
keep whatever rumors of upcoming stuff in mind, ie I've left my Space Marine stuff unpacked for the fall
TIGHTLY store everything that you wont be using in mid-sized easily shuffled boxes (~ 2'x1'x1')
- make sure the box is double walled though
I use thin foam sheets to densely pack my stuff, I've only ever had 2 broken model with this method, the key is NO airspace
Inventory everything in the box before it goes in, I use a spreadsheet
Seal it, attach the inventory, a leave it

I've stored A LOT of projects this way, and it takes up remarkably little space
and if you use standard sized sturdy (d-walled) boxes, you can stack and plan your storage easily
and since its so neatly packed and easily arranged you don't need to worry about ballasting it
unless you live in a NYC or Paris closet (but the get a tablecloth and use it on furniture)

plus as you build a collection this way and you want to introduce someone into the hobby you'll have whatever materials they need already

If your wondering if you have "too many" then you just don't have enough opponents...

I think this answer is different for everyone. It largely depends on a variety of factors.

1) Do you move or are expecting to move a lot? If you rent your situation is more volatile than if you pay mortgage. And moving all that crap is a pain.
2) Do you have a large storage area? Such as a large (preferably walk-in) closet in the room you do your modeling or a basement or a large garage?
3) Do have a "She Who Must Be Obeyed"? I notice that tends to limit (moreso than any other criteria) how much stuff you can accumulate.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

I stand in awe.

I cut out some of my minis. About 50% of my Eldar, my Space Marines and my Tyranids and my BFG Tyranids got dumped on Ebay.

I still have

Lizardmen 2500
Eldar ~2500
Assorted Chaos (including odd stuff)
And my LoE grows daily.

Note that I don't actually HAVE a basement, I am saving up to get one. But when I do rest assured it will be full of minis. XD.

Right. Well, at the moment I have the following.

25mm Aztec Ancients
25mm Wars of the Roses Medieval half finished.
15mm Incas for DBA (De Bellis Antiquitatis)
15mm Early Imperial Romans for DBA
15mm New Kingdom Egyptians for DBA bare metal
15mm Ayyubid Egyptian for DBA bare metal
15mm Crusaders for DBA bare metal
15mm Lithuanian for DBA bare metal (needs some more figures to make it legal)
2mm New Kingdom Egyptians for DBA bare metal
2mm Ancient Assyrians for DBA bare metal
15mm ACW Union (no cavalry)
15mm EIR to add to my DBA army and make it an FoG (Field of Glory) army bare metal
28mm Tau bare plastic and metal, 8 tanks and fishes, Kroot, FCW, sniper drones, Vespids, etc about 4,000 (?) points worth
6mm Napoleonic Russian 1812 building (I've sent these away to paint)
6mm Napoleonic French 1806 building
28mm Samurai skirmish -- about 60 figures, hald of them are painted
50+ Terminators and SMs for Space Hulk
20+ RPG figures in 25/28mm
30 Cold Navy SF fleet ships, half painted

Over the years I've sold

15mm Napoleonic Saxons, full corps
20mm USA Vietnam infantry platoon plus slicks and gunships
28mm Judge Dredd about 20 figs
Many painted and unpainted RPG figures
Bare metal Squats, Imperial Army, Space Marines and odds and sods
28mm Italian Wars about 50 figures for skirmish

Also sold off a load of vehicle and truck kits for 20mm pulp skirmish

Still have to sell hundreds of 1/32 WW2 and modern figures.

On top of which, last year I started rebuying 20mm Vietnam vehicles and planes.

And now I have got into Blue Max and am considering 1/72 biplane kits again!

One main reason so much stuff is unfinished is that it's locked in a warehouse in the port of Tokyo since last August.

I've seen his basement, folks, and he's not exaggerating.

What's sad for me is how the number of armies owned but sold w/o ever fielding them is larger than the armies I've fielded.

fielded: Deathwing, Tau, Biel-Tan Eldar
own, but haven't finished: IG, SM
sold w/o using: Dark Eldar, Tyranids, Iron Warriors, Tomb Kings, Iyanden Eldar (this army I sold years ago to somebody here on Dakka, but I don't remember who)
currently for sale: Lizardmen

The last couple of years, I've gotten much better about not buying what I won't use. In particular, simplifying by limiting myself in what systems I play- I'm slow enough modelling and painting what I already have, I can't afford to go adding more to the list. I'm selling all my WHFB w/o ever having played, and I've been resisting Malfred's repeated efforts to get me into Warmachine.

@Ghidorah: I have only heard the legends about your basement and it's store-like quantities of stuff. Whenever I feel totally overwhelmed by my collection, I think of you (and the folks that have to card catalog their unpainted collection) and feel better...briefly.

@G_P: c'mon man, you played Dark Eldar at least once, whupping up on me . I'm also trying to be better about getting only for things I'm actively playing, or things that can be used for multiple games/systems (which is a lot). And Warmachine is a lot of fun without needing a lot of figs. Definitely try it out with Felix's figures. he's on a roll painting anyway, so you could just make him paint some stuff up for you .

I hear that! in 2004, I could get a game of 40k a week in, which meant there was little problem with having as many as 4 armies (I could always cycle through to the next one, depending on what was my flavor of the month). Now, not so much, and yet I continue to collect and build armies like I've got a game lined up every weekend. Wishful thinking? Pretty figures taking over my mind? Who knows! At least I'm painting, which is at least half the hobby for me (and sometimes has been way more that).

Probably the best geek-related existential question.

Due to the almost crack-like addiction I have for bartertown, I do believe that every 40k army, and every whfb army has appeared in my house, sat in a box, and then been traded away. At one point I had so many shrinkwrapped boxes in my dining room, it looked like I had opened a store. Fortunately, a GT came up, and I decided to make a marine army.

Presently, I have:
40k: Marines, Daemonhunters (with IG), Chaos Marines, Dark Eldar, Eldar
WHFB: Bretonnians, couple units of new VC
LOTR: Rohan, Isengard, Gondor (second age), Haldir's Elves, Rivendell
Epic40k: Space Marines (on sprue)
BFG: Marines, Imperial Navy, Chaos, Eldar
Mordheim: Middenheim, Possessed, Skaven, Undead
Necromunda: Orlock

Warhammer Ancients: Crusades, Romans (one box of the new plastics from Warlord, I think)

Seven Year's War: 10mm Austrians for Might and Reason

I have 25mm French and Indian War, 25mm AWI Hessians

Some Confrontation minis, some 1/300 metal aircraft (for Blue Sky/Red Sun, as mentioned)

Stuff for Legands of the High Seas and Legends of the Old West.

And I'm a sucker for rules. I'll buy a game just to read the rules, with no intention of ever playing (Warmaster Ancients, for example - although I'd like to play )

Finding opponents is always the trick, though, due to travel, time constraints. While I'm only 5 mins from the local GW at the Mills, I'm a little leery of playing there, as I've always played with a good core group at home.

I find myself always selling off odd things that I finally realize I'm never going to paint, or never going to field. And those sales fuel my impulse buys. So I keep a relatively constant supply of new stuff, that I either get around to painting, or I sell/trade off.

I'm moving toward playing more skirmish and small-scale games - we're starting Necro in our little group, we just finished our 4th BFG campaign, and I'd like to get more Combat Patrol-type games in, as well as play some more bigger games of Fantasy or Ancients. We've got one player in our group who is always up for trying some new game, and tries to pull everyone else along with him. I' find it to be bad enough without gamer's ADD adding to my list of projects and acting as a distractant (and yes, I will take no personal responsibility for it)

Bottom line, you have to realistically examine what it is you want to play, how many opponents you have that play it, and how much time you have for hobby and playing. I'd like to get to a point where I don't need to paint anymore, but could focus on terrain, or modelling projects unrelated to an army. I'll get there some day.

Legio Suturvora 2000 points (painted)
30k Word Bearers 2000 points (in progress)
Daemonhunters 1000 points (painted)

Kabal of the Tortured Soul 2000+ points (painted) - Balt GT '08 85th; Mechanicon '09 12th

Cruentus makes a really interesting point here that I hadn't thought about in a while - there was a point at the peak of my collecting when I got as much or more enjoyment out of trading minis on Bartertown as I did from playing the game. I got a rush from seeing a PM or email from someone about a deal.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

I've got about one more army in me. I've managed to accumulate more stuff than I actually have room to store. Sitting about 6 feet away from me is about 150 BattleTech 'Mechs because I simply have no where to put them. I haven't build my Necrons as I have no where to put them.

I have a lot, as follows:

Boxed Games:
Warhammer 40,000K 2nd Ed Box
Dark Millenium X2
4th Ed Starter Box
Cities of Death Box (+3 Imperial Cities, 2 Imperial Sectors + parts and sprues to make up a further Imprerial City)
Tyranid Attack X2
Space Hulk 1st Ed
Genestealer
Deathwing
Space Hulk 2nd Ed (in French!!!)
Necromunda Box X5
Outlanders Box X2
Warhammer Quest
Lair of the Orc Lord
Catacombs of Terror
BattleTech 4th Ed Box
CityTech 1st Ed Box
CityTech 2nd Ed Box
BattleTech 5th Ed Box

40K Armies:

30K Points of Chaos (including a complete Lost & The Damned army)
30K Points of Imperial Guard (including Inquisitorial assets and almost 10 Super-Heavies)
12K Points of Ultramarines
12K Points of Tyranids
8K of Necrons (unbuilt)
2500 Point Deathwatch Army

Necromunda:
Orlock (every metal model every made plus twice as many converted plastics)
Goliath (every metal model every made plus twice as many converted plastics)
Delaque
Escher
Wyrd Gathering
Scavvies
Redemptionists (including every priest and Red model GW makes, sometimes twice over)

Every Warhammer Quest character except the Imperial Noble (damn you eBay!).

Over 200 BattleTech 'Mechs and over 50 BattleTech vehicles.

I have no room left.

The only army that I want to do is a Crusading Marine army. I've always wanted to do a Crusading Marine army, but not Templars, and as part of my Deathwatch Army I got a Black Templar upgrade sprue and fell in love with the parts. I have grand ideas for mixing and matching parts from them, the Command Squad and the Dark Angel kits to make up a very ornate Crusading Marine army, the fluff being the remnants of 3 Chapters banding together to fight an endless Crusade.

But that's not 'til the end of the year. In the mean time there are still 'Mechs I don't own yet...

I find it somewhat hilarious that people (myself included) keep posting with things like "oh, I forgot about..." I love being able to go shopping in my closet when I start a new project. "Pirates? Let me see what I've got...Oh, look at all these 4th ed. Empire figs!"

(Of course, I forgot my Imperial BFG fleet. And my Tau. Whoops.)

Don't even get me started on rules. I have PILES of rules, some of which I have no idea where they came from, and may NEVER get to play. In fact, I'm researching new bookshelves, mostly because I'm sick of looking at these and need more space for my 'regular' book collection, but also because I've officially run out of rulebook and supplement space...

Here's my army history:

Marines started in '93
Then Eldar
Then Nids
Then Necrons
Then Empire
Then redid basic nids into alienids
Then Sold Necrons
Then got back into Marines
Then Night Lords
Then traded Night Lords for Tomb Kings
Then Tau
Then Kroot Beastmen
Then Imperial Guard
Then Sold Tau
Then Skorne for Hordes
Then Sold Eldar and Empire
Then Chaos Marines

whew.. that's a lot of army men over the years

Right now my "main" army is imperial guard. About to shelf them while I wait for the new codex. I'm working on finishing my chaos marines, and I'm going to be dusting off my nids again too for 5th edition. My Skorne army is more of a side project, as are my beastmen. My Tomb Kings I haven't touched in a while, in fact I've only played WFB once since the new edition was released and that was with my Empire army.

I really just don't have the kind of time I used to, so stuff is collecting dust a lot more now. I've toyed with the idea of selling my tomb kings, but I really love the theme and the models, so I think for WFB they're pretty much gonna be my main army if/when I get back to it and the beasts will always be stuck around 1000 pts like they are now.

Oh, I forgot I sold my Elf, Dwarf and Human Blood Bowl teams this spring!

And I forgot my 5 boxes of official 15mm Traveller figures and about 100 official Laserburn 15mm figures.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I'm sorry to say too, that at one time I had decent sized armies of Goblins and Dwarves using (I think) Grenadier figures, and they just vanished from my garden shed !11!

I have no idea what happened to them. I never sold them or gave them away, they were just not there when I cleared out the shed to move hosue.

Maybe they escaped and are fighting in the garden even now

You know why I love Dakka, and specifically this thread? Because it makes me feel a bit more focused. My friends tease me for not concentrating on one army or project, always making remarks along the lines of "Oh, let me guess... Lizardmen?" or "Ok, so you're starting Eldar now?".

And all I've got is (all estimates rough):
2500 pts Brettonians
3000 pts Wood Elves
3000 pts Vampire Counts
10,000 pts Imperial Guard
2000 pts Tau
5000 pts Imperial Navy (BFG)
an entire fighter wing of Imperial Navy Aeronautica planes
and a small smattering of Chaos Renegade Militia and Inquisition forces.

And this seems a paltry sum next to these aforelisted, impressive collections. I tip my hat to you, good sirs.

Oh yeah, forgot BFG. I have a chaos and imperial fleet both around 2000 pts. Also play mordheim, but I just use models from my regular WFB armies.

Also I have a lot of ideas for modeling projects and small armies so I'm going to start building a few new armies at 500 or 1000 pts tops.. At the moment I'm thinking renegade guard using the FW models, and a small nurgle demon army .. I can use either for small games or combine them with my marines for big apocalypse games.

Also thinking about pirates for Warmachine. Plus a few folks in my group are getting into Flames of War. I got the rulebook so far, and if I get into that I'll go with either Soviets or USA.

Nope. My DE were never even close enough to painted that I'd have put them on the tabletop. In fact, I don't think I had a single one past priming before 4th edition came along and I built a Brute Squad out of them (they are easily the best race for that, BTW). I'm fairly certain you and I have only played two games of 40K- one w/ me using my Deathwing, and the one where I surprised you with the fact that I even owned an Eldar army.

You know, for a man of god, you sound an awful lot like Satan.

The problem is that if I like Warmachine, I won't be able to stop myself from buying my own minis.

Yeah, I too know the joy of measuring my Mech collection in number of Battalions (and I may be up to 2 Regiments; I haven't counted recently).

I think for a lot of people, there is no such thing as "too much", at least until it reaches a point at which you can't afford to store it / aren't making your rent or mortgage / stop eating... I think "too much" is very much a personal thing.

Army-wise, I have quite a few armies for quite a few systems in various scales, but I'm very heavily into 40k:

40k
- Craftworld Tian-Bing (8k Eldar)
- Ragnarok 1st "Einherjar" (4k IG)
- Knights Sovereign (4k SM)
- Templars Illuminati (3k CSM)
- Ordo Lucifer (2k =I=)

WFB
- Solland's Ghosts (4k Dogs of War)
- Neue Solland (4k Empire)

BFG
- 6k Eldar Corsairs
- 2k+ Imperial Navy
- 2k +Chaos Fleet

Necromunda
- Spyre Hunter kill-team
- House Escher gang

Epic
- Eldar

WarMachine
- Cryx

Flames of War
- 2.5k Panzerkompanie

Heavy Gear
- 5k Southern Milicia

OGRE
- 1.5k Paneuropean

I generally limit myself to working on 1 project at a time, as my workspace is limited. A lot of stuff sits in boxes, but the majority of my models are built, and about half of what I own is painted. So I've made pretty decent progress over they years.

A few years ago, I consolidated my gaming and miniatures and refocused things down to the armies you see listed above. I don't expect that I'll be adding any new armies in the foreseeable future, as I went through a lot of effort on Bartertown to trim things back, selling and trading.

At this point, I don't believe that I have "too much" stuff at all. All of the stuff is stuff I want, and I don't have any pressing desires for stuff that I don't own. So it's a good alignment of haves and wants. If you have what you want, then that's all one can really ask for.

[SNIP ludicrously large list of stuff!]

The only army that I want to do is a Crusading Marine army. I've always wanted to do a Crusading Marine army, but not Templars, and as part of my Deathwatch Army I got a Black Templar upgrade sprue and fell in love with the parts.

That is a ridiculous amount of stuff. How much of it is playable (built and painted)?

Also, do you have a picture of it all spread out across a garage floor?

Crusading Marines are awesome, and the BT sprue is easily one of the best bitz sets GW has ever produced. I've got one planned and ready to go once the SM book comes out and I can figure out what exactly what I'm going to have for 5th Edition.
