hey all,

i got a question for you. would you guys let me in a friendly game (using the Ghazkull's Bully Boyz apoc data fax as a template) play a "Deffwing" army using all of the applicable rules for mega nobz and such? if that didnt make sense, i want to, essentially, make a deathwing army using Ork Meganobz and their rules, but using the meganobz as troops)

let me know what you guys would do if someone asked you to play against an army like that?

thanks!

I would, as it's a legal Army, As long as you have 2 warbosses you can take 2 squads of Nobs or Mega-Nobs as troops, Hence, you can up to 5 Squads of Mega-Nobs in a legal army. And really, until you get to the 2000-ish range, if you need more than 50 Meganobs you're doing something wrong. :p

Blargag, where are you located? This is the second time in as many months I've heard of someone wanting to make a Deff Wing, unless you're in Baton Rouge, in which case you're the same person.

I gave passing thought to doing a Deffwing army. I have the urge to play Orks, but someone else local is going to do Green Tide that I wanted to do, and I faced the facts I would never dedicate myself to painting ~200 Orks. Deffwing seems like a good alternative because no one's doing it, and it would be a LOT less guys to paint.

i have to agree about the hoard army. after painting like 6k of IG, im done with hoard armies. i want an elite army that plays differently from any army that i have ever played (not hard as ive only ever played SoB and IG )

either way, its nice to see that im not the only one to have thought of it, and that people arent screaming "cheezeball!" at me or anything like that.

Nah it's not an uber powered list. It could be fun, but it's not super powerful. Meganobs cost too much, don't have an invunerable save and are too easy to break or instant death.
They do make a horrible mess of tanks or marines in close combat though.

@ Grey Death: yeah, thats exactly what i was thinking when i had the idea for this army. it will probably be pretty fun to paint and will defiantly be fun on the TT.

@all: do any of you guys have any meganobz that you dont need and would be willing to sell/trade to me? i have a feeling that i will need like 30 or 40 of them for this army, so id like to get as many as possible second hand cuz $15 a mini will break me and my high school kid budget.

thanks a lot!

Well, two units of 9 with upgrades and two Mega Armoured Warbosses (Or Ghaz and one normal warboss) are going to set you back 1000-1100 points anyway.
Throw in 2 battlewagons to transport them for around 150 each and you've got close to 1400. So a looted wagon or some buggies or something, or even a squad of three in a trukk would get you up to 1500 points!
It's actually a very low model count army!

I do think you would lose a lot of games with it though- Meganobs are vunerable to morale in a big way, and they're so expensive and melee focused, while being so slow. A smart player would blow up the wagons as a priority and then chuckle as you lumbered slowly towards you, picking off your guys with lascannon, railguns, multimeltas and the like, before hammering you with counter assault. Ghaz mitigates that somewhat with his once per game speed boost, but even at that you're going to struggle against a balanced force.

what i planned to do was (essentially)

HQ:
Ghaz & Reg Warboss
Elites:
2x 9 Meganobz w/ Battlewagon
Troops:
2x 10 Meganobz w/ Battlewagon
Fast Attack:
Nothing
Heavy Support:
not sure if i have any points left, but if i do id take a looted wagon

PS: this is for 2k, not 1500 (but i might build it to 1850 first then to 2k)

let me know what you think (and if i have any points left after the list that i just laid out).

thanks a lot!

Might want to watch yourself there..

Regardless, as long as the models are at least partly WYSIWYG, I wouldnt mind. If it means less Smurfs on the face of the earth, that can only be a good thing.

It's a really cool theme for an army, but I would seriously think about the investment in time and money to make this army up to 2000 points. It's going to play the exact same way every time, and it's not going to do very well against a lot of lists. Any meganobs mob not lead by a Warboss has pathetically low leadership for the amount of points it costs, and at 2000 points there's going to be a lot of firepower knocking about that can kill off enough to force morale checks, and even if they pass they always strike last in close combat, so anything with rending or power weapons, or just wodgeloads of attacks is going to give you fits. They're so slow (Slow and Purposeful FTL) that they have a good chance of not making a charge on a unit that is rapid firing them, essentially doubling the amount of damage done by most units. I see a lot of people whinging about Terminators being underpowered. Well as a comparison, Termies get an invunerable save, no SAP, better weapon options, Teleportation to get themselves across the battlefield, better BS. The only thing Meganobs have on them is the extra attack and wound, and with instant death the extra wound isn't even worth all that much.
A small unit is good in a balanced ork force for taking down tough and expensive units that normal orks struggle with, but with 40 of them you're leaving yourself open to being out manoveured, out gunned and out fought. Remember that in 5th, even making it into combat isn't the safety net it used to be- you'll kill one unit dead, and then get shot to bits and counter assaulted the next turn. Since each of your units costs 400 points or more, it's really, really, really unlikely you'll have made your points back in terms of causulties.

If you still want to spend upwards of 300 dollars or whatever on this army after all my negativity, then I can only say more power to ya, good luck, and I hope you enjoy the hell out of it.

@ Da BossL yeah, i know just how bad this list will play on the TT, but im building it cuz it will be a fun army to play and a VERY challenging army to win with. not to mention that it will probably be pretty fun to paint! plus, converting a bunch of battlewaggonz should be pretty fun 2 (can anyone say tonka dump truck w/ orky gliffs and whatnot?!?!?)

@ JD21290: yeah... i wish that you had seen this first too. 20 meganobz would have (essentially) gotten me a 1000 point or so army in one shot. oh well. thats life i guess.

@ everyone else: thanks for the encouragement and whatnot. still looking for any meganobz or warbosses that you guys might have!

thanks a lot!
BLARGAG!!!

PS: how do you guys think i should paint my nobz? i was thinking of doing one squad from each clan (to represent the whole we are Ghazkull's retinue during the war for Armageddon). the other option is to just paint all of them Goff (which could look pretty kool, but could get boaring after a little while). let me know what you think.

i like the idea of multi clans, might be worth keeping them all the same colour, and painting the jawplates to match a different clan.
kinda like the way chaos black legion work.

also, check ebay, there are allways loads on there, and mostly 3-5 per lot, usually go for around £2 / $4 each lol

I love Bad Moon Meganobz. So I'd go with the multi-clan idea. More fun to paint and see on the table top, as well as having a sound theme.

Good luck with the army.
