So in my fevered web wanderings I stumbled across this rather ..hmmmm........ WTF how crazy is this guy, article- see the attached map especially.
Now, whilst I guess given the fluidity of events in the modern world, it is impossible to rule this out completely ( although I do think he seems to severely underestimate the inner resolve, determination, resourcefulness and just darn perkiness of the septics I deal with here and elsewhere), I really don't see this happening, or at least not tiwth the speed he talks about.
Really what I was wondering about is how our American posters here would see the country going if it did divide. It struck me as unlikely that California-- which is fairly economically right but left leaning socially/private lifes (right ?) -- would wind allied with Utah.Under Chinese control. Chinese have a thing for Mormons or something ?
I can't help but think that the EU is perhaps a bit too far for New York and Co. to sign up with ( as opposed to China eh ?!).
And would anyone want Iowa ?
*thinks* Just in case : To clarify Please lets not have this turn into a AMERICA IS THE SUCK11 AMERICA IS THE AWZUMM thread. Not my intent at all, just wondering really where, especially our American members, see their country going, and if a break up is even feasible.

Presuming the US collapsed and things became a land grab: First off, Texas would *never* be part of Mexico. If anything, they'd re-take it and make it the Republic of Tejas. Texans have actual pride. Second, Alaska would never go back to the Russkies. Canada, perhaps, but Russkies, no way. Hawaii probably would go to Japan - it's very Japanese already. California to New Mexico could fold under Mexico, but most likely California would be it's own wierd hyper-leftist socialist enclave that everybody else despises. I.e. the status quo. So done with the wierd outliers... The Mid-Atlantic is too far south and not far enough west - take Ohio and Michigan, for the Virginia & Kentucky south to the Carolinas. But yeah, they'll be the new new-Euro trash. Southern Canada would pick up Utah and Idaho, probably Nevada for good measure.

I guess this guy has been reading some old cyberpunk sourcebook. Anyway don´t dismiss the join the EU idea. The hidden EU constitution (hush! don´t give up the big secret) has defined Europe as the big continent starting at Portugal and ending at the shores of Sendai. The other hemisphere is scheduled for the 22th century

You're completely forgetting about the upcoming North American Union of Canada, the US and Mexico. It'll be a utopia for all who drink the kool-aid! Political organizations are getting bigger, not smaller. We're gradually heading toward a one-world government, I see it coming by the end of the century. The only significant holdout I see will be Africa, because most of them don't know what an actual stable government that operates by the rule of law is.
By the way, Mad Doc Grotsnik, is there a British to American dictionary I can buy that will help me make sense of your more arcane utterances? No offense but Half the time I have no idea what you're talking about. I have a hard enough time decyphering all the netspeak gibberish. I guess I'm just not cool...

The progress of evolution cannot be stopped. By virtue of our steady diet of bovine growth hormones, discarded pharmaceuticals and leaking chemical weapon stores, not to mention all those alien abductions, we Americans are slowly but surely becoming the new model of Homo Sapien, for better or worse. The crack babies are doing their part as well.

All part of our cunning plan,
I kind of side with you in regards to the eventual one world Govt. thing, although I have a horrible suspicion it will actually be some form of global company instead.
I really don't see the USA fragmenting like in the article though. I can see Europe ultimately forcing a divide amongst the United Kingdoms, before we get relabelled as Airstrip 1/2/3 etc

It's all the trend right now to talk about the decline of the US and all, but I can't begin to imagine the series of events that has the US collapse and Mexico come to dominate some portion of its former states. Mexico right now is more dependant on US trade than most US states are.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Lawl! That map has the confederacy with Texas and the North. Only thing that comes from Texas are steers and queers. Only thing that comes from the North are douche bags. But no really, the New Confederate Union is what we'll be calling ourselves after your crap-tastic northern ways fail us once again. We have industry this time and we'll be just fine. We will most likely be made up of Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, North & South Carolina, Tennessee and probably Louisiana. We've been saying it for years "The South shall rise again!" with a swig of beer and a belch. I just hope we can recover from all the stupid and fat we have right now...

I'm being tongue-in-cheek here, but IMO it's a little ironic that a Brit would post something from a former Soviet about a country divided.
Seriously though, what the Russian guy doesn't understand is that as much as you hear about red states and blue states, we really are one country with a pretty united people, especially considering how diverse we are. Personally, whether I'm in the Deep South, NYC or the west coast, it still feels like the good ol' U.S. of A. to me.
