You forgot the SPace Hulk compendium.
Other then that, this has to be one of your best posts yet. Good conversation, great layout.
I'm not holding my breath on Space Hulk, redux.
I have the old stuff. I could be happy with the 2-4th edition models. Now gives me time to get the stuff that was overpriced the first time around.
You cannot improve on a classic game like Space Hulk. It was perfect. Anything else to it is crapping on the game.
Great post!

Good summary. I have both exditions but never really looked into the 1st Ed rulebook. And I've never even read the Deathwing/Genestealer books, or the compendium.
One thing I like is that the 1st Ed, 2nd Ed and Tyranid Attack tiles were all compatable with one another, so you could do massive ships (I could cover a 8X4 table with tiles without even using the 'Nid Attack ones), and you could do a 'transition' style board, going from technical corridors into corridors overrun by alien growths.
As we're looking to get into Dark Heresy soon, having 1st Ed + both expansions, 2nd Ed, two copies of Tyranid Attack, all of Warhammer Quest and heaps of Necromunda Terrain gives me heaps of options for settings and locations. I already have an idea of setting up three sets of Space Hulk tiles on a single table to represent the three decks of a ship that the players can fight over.

Very interesting piece. I didn't know anything about second edition Hulk or the later games until I read this.
Thank you.

I remember Space Crusade. I used to play it when I was 13 or 14. Like a lot of people my age, this game and Hero Quest were my introduction to GW games.
That said, I don't have many fond memories of the former. My friend who owned it always played the "games master" role and never read the rules properly. He would pop a genestealer out whenever he felt like it and the needless to say...
"Game over man, gave over!"

While I have never played space hulk (Except that free PC version that sprung up some months backs) i'm extremely excited about its upcoming release. Based on what i've read in this thread and elsewhere I think i'd prefer the 1st edition as it truly seems to be a superior experience.
Is there a large consensus among fans that 1st edition is better than 2nd? In this case i'm wondering if GW will actually listen to the fans on this issue? I just have a feeling that this new edition of Space Hulk is simply going to be a redone version of the 2nd edition because of its simplicity.

Never played space hulk second edition or saw the books. I remember space hulk had awesome style. Awesomeness. Genestealer was especially awesome.

I had first ed Space Hulk, which was a lot of fun (even painted up yellow blood angle terminators out of the box!).
A friend borrowed it (as well as Space Marine - epic) and I never saw them again.
Recently picked up Space Crusade and Advanced Space crusade at a flea market for $30 for the two - just wanted them for the minis (including twin linked lascannon tarantula), although my son likes to play army men with space marines vs whatever on the tiles it comes with.

Space Hulk was a close second to Blood Bowl as the boxed GW game I loved most, aged around 11-14. Space Hulk was good and Deathwing and Genestealer were absolutely awesome. The three-wide tile sections referred to above made for some awesome fun.
The other good thing was that although we mixed it up from time to time, I preferred playing as Terminators and my friend as Genestealers.
I have fond memories of having my librarian use celerity to devastating effect time and time again.
The terminator models sucked donkey dong, but the genestealers are still my favourite 'stealer models to this day. I just don't like the modern ones anywhere near as much.
Good article, thanks for finding it.

I've got the complete ruleset (well, barring White Dwarf articles) for 1st Edition of Space Hulk, and I would like to add with a brief review of the Space Hulk Compendium Book...
We shall start off with the Contents....
Pages 3 to 57 comprise of 4 seperate Campagins, a series of linked Missions which often start off with static forces, and the more the Marine player loses, the less he has for the next Mission.
In order to play them all, you would require both Expansions for the main game, as not only does it include Hybrids, Psionics, Patriarchs etc, but also the Board Sections that came with them.
As well as playing the Missions individually, there is the option to play them altogether, and a complete floor plan for The Last Stand and Sentinel V campaigns.
The Mission Objectives were quite different to the normal Space Hulk missions. One for example, involves the Marine player trying to Poison the Genestealers!
Following on from that, you come across the additional rules for the game, including Traitor Space Marines. This, rather handily, included Force Strength for the already published Missions, as well as how to run the game as Imperial V Traitors, taking the Genestealers entirely out of the equation. Sadly, I never did really get round to playing this way, as being aged around 12, I didn't exactly have the sponds to spend on Tratiors. Though I did pick up a few! Bizarrely, you also had a D10 table to roll on to discover which Legion the Traitors were from, which told you how many Traitors would comprise a squad. You would have to fulfil the number as much as possible, with any remainder forming an under strength squad. Notably, Nightlords, Word Bearers and of course World Eaters are all listed as Khornate....
As well as note on how to use them for Mission Generator, erm, generated Missions, there is also 'Contract Revoked' which is a special Imperial V Traitor Marine mission.
Other special missions, including new rules for pit falls etc are also on.
Then, we get to the bestest bit, the Power Armour rules. Not exactly reccomended as they were especially wussy when it came to HTH, but again, it was another iteration on the Missions which was good enough reason to play. Notably they were far more spritely and manouverable than their Terminator Brothers, so it wasn't all bad. Oh, and you got butt loads of them! 4 Squad types were available (Tactical, Devastator, Close Assault and Heavy Weapons.
And as with the Traitors, there follows a Power Armour specific Mission, 'Denzarks Hammer'.
Then we get a variety of new Weapons (Essentially those also introduced from Genestealer) and most useful of all, a complete listing of Weapon Tables, showing what needs what to kill whatever. Though, if memory serves, the Flamer never did show up...
And right up the back the cardboard cut out section. As you might have guessed, I can't say what was in that as it was cut out long, long ago!
Overall an essential piece for the Space Hulk enthusiast!

just a question, but has anyone considered that GW are going to do a mighty empires on space hulk.
ie:
1)take a classic complete game.
2)produce some plastic tiles
3) sell said plastic tiles at massive mark up taking piss out of good name built up by said classic complete game
Just throwingthat out there to see what people think....

Its always possible, but does it matter?
The rules for both editions are readily available all over the place online.
I hazard to guess that some people would want the tiles more than they want the rules.
I personally want tighter rules more than snazzy tiles any day of the week.
Hulk boards are easy to build, getting a group of people to play with house rules is not nearly as easy to do.

I'm not sure that Mighty Empires qualifies as a "classic." Just cause it's old doesn't mean it was a great game.
