This might be the worst thing that I've ever read. It's things like this that make me lose all hope in humanity. As Newt would say in Aliens, "They say there's not monsters, but there are."
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090319/ts_nm/us_austria_incest
The 73-year-old Austrian, who fathered seven children with daughter Elisabeth, has pleaded guilty to incest, rape, enslavement and murder, by neglect, in the death of an infant son born underground in 1996.

We've been following this in Europe for around a year now.
Quite depressing the amount of nutters out there. Seems that the verdict is due any moment now (BBC News just said the Reporters and Public have been allowed back in to the court room).

Guilty on all counts (as he plead, though not initially on the Murder and another one).
Sentenced to life in a secure mental unit. Hardly seems fair really.

As long as he's not free in society, I don't care where they hide him away.
Considering the nature of his crime, I think there's a real arguement that he had to be insane to do it in the same way that Ted Bundy 'had to be insane' to commit his crimes. My guess is that the Austrian is not mentally fit and healthy, but also not criminally insane. He covered up and hid his crime.
What's the story with his wife? She helped raise 3 of the children. She must have known what was going on.

Some say so, but I'm not terribly sure.
He explained his Daughter's disappearance by claiming she'd run off to join a Commune. When the kids were born, he'd take them upstairs and claim that the Daughter had abandoned them on the doorstep.
Even a Lodger in the house didn't notice. It's a shocker to be sure.

I can't believe it took this long for this story to cross the atlantic. I'm not sure if it's been a year already, but I'm sure it was at least 6 months ago.
And fraz, I don't think midieval would quite cover what that guy deserves.

As much as the logical part of my brain believes that the justice system should be above the base human instincts for vindictive revenge and that life imprisonment in a mental institution is the best thing all round for this nutter, there is a part of me that wants to see him thrown to a pack of rabid badgers. I can't even comprehand the mindset of this man. Actually that’s probably a good thing.

Incidently I remeber a letter in that great British institution Viz magazine that was printed just after the deatails emerged about 6 months ago which went somthing along these lines:
"I dont see what all the fuss is about, the last time an Austrian kept his familly hidden the basement it was turned into one of the most well loved family musicals of all time."
I laughed, I felt slightly evil for doing so, but I still laughed.

Viz is good/bad for that.
WHEN I make comments about the size of Britney Spears's tits and women not making good pilots, my girlfriend accuses me of being sexist. Yet when I punch her in the face she starts ranting and raving about it being wrong to hit a lass. The hypocrisy of it all dumbfounds me.

One of the curious points about the case is that the cellar wasn't sound proofed. Also, he had to keep buying food for lots of people while claiming that there was only him and his wife in the house.
There are a lot of loose ends not tied up. And I expect they never will be.
Still, every nation has a (hopefully small) number of disturbed individuals. When talking about mental illness and crime it is difficult sometimes to imagine that someone who can function fully within normal society is doing something so weird and depraved at home that it boggles any normal person to find out. Are they mad or just very bad?

Odd story, my roommate found a picture of this guy online by typing "creepy old guy" into a search engine while looking for an image to make into an avatar. However he didn't bother to read the story that went with the image. So he did a creepy digital painting of the guy and made it his avatar on another site. Last night I came across this story and told him what the guy did. My roommates is currently looking for a new avatar.

I don't believe in the death penalty, but locking this guy up until he dies in 10-20 years somehow doesn't seem fair considering the torture he committed. He raped hsi daughter over 3000 times according to BBC news... this is about as low a human being can get.

Well this upsets me to the core,I don't really get how he could be so cruel as to lock his daughter in the cellar for basically her whole life and rape her and then father children by her.One more chilling thing is the vid of him on holiday having a good time while his daughter was locked in the basment.Oh and I think a nuthouse is where he should be!!!
