Cleaning up the mess. Seriously, if you take nothing else away from this little project log, learn this lesson. Keeping everything clean means that your wife (gf, mom, etc) will tolerate, or even encourage your projects. Leaving a mess means that they'll associate your hobbies with their messy house and resent it.

Very nice board, I was thinking of doing something like that myself. I may add a few dead trees/grass and skeletons to break up the sand.

RoB board - £150 + painting and decorating it.
This one - About £40-£50 total.
this one also looks better, allows you to design it yourself and chose how its going to work.
Love it, and also may have to try it.

Very nice! MDF is pretty hefty stuff, though. Are you concerned about it damaging the board surface?
|
What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

I'm just starting using this as the basis for my table.
A tip for anyone buying from B&Q.
Price each size of MDF sheet as price per 2x2 board. I got 8 2x2 boards per type for around the price of 4 by getting the biggest size they do, and letting them cut it to size.

I'm half-way though this article, and here's something I realised...
If you want to have corner hills that fit together side by side:
Work out how many levels you want to have (I went for 3)
Take one of the square boards, and mark 3 points along the edge, possibly around the 1/4, 1/3 and 1/2 points (or whatever you think)
Use that as a template to cut your corner hills to. Make them symmetrical.
Cut 4 or more of each size.
Stand all the same-sized hill pieces together, and cut them to the same length.
Stack the peices to work out which go best on top of which, and glue.
It sounds complicated, but if you cut all the bottom hill parts to standard lengths, you can mix and match the corner hills. They can be a big central hill, or hill on either side to make a valley, etc.
This is how the GW board works, and it's all down to having corners cut to the same sizes.
I've made one board to be a whole side, so is the same as having 2 corner hills. It'll go in the middle of a 6x4 table, with 2 corners up against it.
It could go on the end instead, making a long corner hill.
