The usual new codex release question: Is the new Space Wolves Codex over-powered?

I figure if we keep doing this for every codex, maybe we can see a trend. . .

Nah, I don't think its OP, I put it down to hype. I have flicked through the book, and it is all scary, but expensive and by no means unbeatable. Their domination is ensured, but it will be, like all things, temporary. Guard are the ones that I fear most...

But they aren't OP either.

I haven't seen those point costs, but this thunderwolf cavalry nonsense had better at least fall under equivalent exchange.

No. It has some scary things, but most codecies do.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

So far, I have not been steam rolling my opponents into the 42nd Millennium.

I do owe an apology to a Dark Angels player. You can field more terminators with the Space Wolves, so, by that consideration, Deathwing players can cry a justified OP. I suppose that CSM players, especially the more Khorne-centric builds, can join in. (Or play 'counts as'. I'll shake my head in disappointment, as I was not playing my Space Wolves as 'counts as' for the preceding years. Whatever lets you sleep at night.)

While there are a lot of powerhouse units, it's hard to field very many of them.

I think the whole codex creep thing is really dying down. Now people just assume the codex wont be OP after a few months.

I have to say that in a few months we'll all be freaking out over how OP codex tyranids is.

Going back several codexes:
Eldar harlies were so OP they were going to break the game
Lash was going to destroy everything in it's path
Nob bikers were all the rage
IG air cav was unbeatable in theory

Something new is always scary at first. As we play against it we will adjust our game and the next codex will scare us all.

I would suggest to any one that thinks that the Space Puppies Over Powered not just Over-The-Top, just try to make up a 1750 point list just 1-2 Special Characters. After a few attempts just look at your Model Count and compare it your Armies List. That or try to build the same list with Logan or Njal with some Terminators and Land Raider.

I think it will get stronger later on

once everyone figures out that you do not need to take these rediculously costed special characters, and just throw out a bunch of cheapies, and essentially play a meq horde with missles and meltas mixed in or something... then, it will be scary.

Special characters are over pointed. way overpointed, in every book. i think grimnar may be the only real good guy to take because of scoring wolf guard, how sweet is that?

i think we have only seen the tip of the iceberg, and it will be interesting to see what the people do with it... mass a bunch of bloodclaws or use logan with wolf guard swarming the field.

It's not op even the feared JoWW.. It's true it's a 24 in line but a line none the less. If someone is playing the sw they know it's likely in the list so to beat it you offset your troops and spread them out. It's not that great vs eldar, sm, csm tyranids etc. It's only maybe a bother to slow I armies like necrons. Monstrous creatures get a bonus to shrug it off. The guy who is using it only has 2 wounds with no invuln save. He's very soft. If someone tried to beast out the units they would cause their units to be over priced and cripple themselves badly. It's a strong codex but it's not op. A good player is still a good player so if your playing a good sw player hes beating you with his skills not just a codex. I own the army and codex so I'm basing what I'm saying from play and reading the codex a ridiculous amount of times. Their termies don't deepstrike, almost no one is insta death proof, their hqs are in the range of ridiculous pt cost, range is their bane, etc Instead of griping about a percieved imbalance why not realize that one kinda iffy model will not break the game. Oh and one more piece on the hqs.. they can't spam the jaws, wargear, etc like lash, nob bikers etc.

JoWW is stupid broken. Lash/Siren/Fear of Darkness level.

It will do less damage to a unit than a str 8+ template.. Lash is more powerful overall than this cause it affects everyone. Anyone with a 4 or better I can shrug it off with maybe 2 losses at worst. I guess against folks like you it would be a fun to have one in the list so you freak out and try to kill him totally oblivious of the real threats gettin ready to lay the hurt. A wolf lord, lukas, and arjac are some of the sleepers that can be more brutal than joww.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

I think it's typical.

A Codex designed in a vacuum with no references to previous books, so new rules are created, identical units are given different rules in this book compared to the last, parts are overpowered, parts make you scratch your head wondering why they thought that was a good idea, and a number of units within the Codex are designed without any reference to units within the same Codex.

Pendulum-based game design within a multi-chambered vacuum - GW par for the course.

I don't know. But I do know the White Dwarf featuring the SW was Over Priced. 1250 Yen - about $15 US. I had not bought an issue in a while and needed some nerd reading material for transit. Apparently, they are still making Lord of the Rings stuff. Who knew?

space wolves are overpowered... just take nothing but grey hunters.

If you don't take the overcosted special characters, and focus only one the good value units, you can make a seriously hard space wolves list.

The whole thing about power creep is actually just people wetting themselves that something new is out and they may actually have to think of a way to beat it, as opposed to reaching into their mental strategy bank for whatever build is across the tablel. If they can handle the strategy, it was a good balanced game and they won because of deployment; IF they couldn't think of or execute a succesful strategy then it's classed as a power list and they other person is being unsporting.
But when there just aren't any counter-strategys yet, people JUST panic.

Codex creep is good, it makes players work to make there list better, so they dont get beaten by the new dex 'powerbuilds'.

I played one game against the wolf wolves. And from my experience they are not that impressive, at least none more then regular marines. Now I will say that my opponent, while not bad, is by no means a serious tournament style player. What they seem like is an army with lots of nasty but expensive characters. However the idea of someone fielding what amounts to orks in power armor is what scares me. 15 long fangs with missile launchers, and gobs of grey hunters would be a serious issue.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

Seems OK to me. Have not played/ with it.

Go Codex creep. Make the game better everytime. Look at how WoW classes have evolved over the years. As an example.

Im not all that experienced in WH yet, but from what I've seen, it puts the SM codex to shame. If I could start the entire hobby over again, instead of SMs, I probably would have gone with The Wolves. Too late now I guess =/

How are the ironclad, calgar, vulcan, kantor, master of the forge, Librarian, telian etc outclassed?

I find it ironic that when the Pony Express Rider comes in with news of a new codex we're as happy as can be but when the codex comes out cries of "HOLYDOGSHI-HOW DO YOU BEAT THIS?!" are too common.

Meh. I will post a more OT opinion when I have to play against them.

Never heard of a second or third army? I got Tau and Orks! I am getting Space Marines and I picked up a Basilisk and a Valkyrie just for fun to paint! If I keep picking up Leman Russ tanks and other units from Guard every now and then. Maybe 1 every other month or so. I will have a Fourth Army to go with my First Three!
