Basically, I want to know how everyone sees the Alpha Legion, until recently that I borrowed a copy of some Chaos Codices I thought the Alpha legion was just another spiky marines chapter.
Now I'm really starting to believe they are somewhat loyal(ish) to the Emperor.
Fire away please.

I've had the same feelings, before hand I just pegged them off as a sneaky spiky chaos legion, but after reading Legion...and to keep this brief so no spoilers are given out, i'm thinking that the Alpha Legion joined the Heresy on Horus' side because they realized that in the long run This ultimate act of undercover work would do more good for the end game than just joining the war on the emperor's side and it ending about the same.
P.S I also think that because of what I just said their battle cry of "For the Emperor!" is not actually them being sarcastic, but them shouting that all they do, for ten thousand years is for the emperor. Just the other legions assume they are being sarcastic. Genius

I think it is highly like that over the centuries, some Alpha Legion members have well and truly gone to chaos. The whole 'gaze too long into the darkness' thing. Others may still be somewhat on the side of the Imperium, although far more likely on the side of the Emperor and dislike some the way that the Imperium has gone.
It is stated in places that they have kept their tradition of having human operatives infiltrating places or already in positions of interest. So it appears that either warbands have individual goals or the legion as a whole has several goals, but nobody knows what they are. The original goal of destroying chaos from the inside hasn't worked the way it was planned (since Horus got killed) but they may be searching for or implementing another plan/s. I think half the point of the Alpha Legion is that nobody clue what they are doing, and their defused and multifaceted leadership make it incredibly hard for anyone to disrupt or cripple them.
And imitating loyalists to get places is an interesting stratergy. It makes me wonder if at times they've fought in a way that actually does defend the Imperium and been thought of as a rescuing space marine force, just because it suited one of their strategies.
I feel they're the Tzeentch of marines. Near impossible to understand, always plotting, and quite good at manipulating everyone else to get things done.

OK, if you don't already know this*, and you're reading this thread, you get what you deserve.
I think.
Anyway, I believe that yes, the Alpha Legion are playing at a 'bigger' game.
I also believe that, after so long, some of them really have 'gone over'.
I also beleive that eventually Alpharius and Omegon are going to have a falling out over just how they should be doing what they're doing.
I also believe that GW themselves have no idea what is ultimately going on because, well, they're GW and there are som many contradictory fluff pieces already out there.
I'm just hoping that Abnett eventually writes a sequel.
God knows we didn't need 3 Dark Angel books. OK, at least not the 3 we're going to get...
*"This" being the whole Alpharius/Omegon thing...

Alpharius was killed in a battle by Smurf Primarch Robot Gullible, according to Lexicanum.com, apparently as a strategic ruse played by the Alpha Legion themselves (Omegon and Alpharius were twin Primarchs, and they use the 'hydra philosophy' as their credo). Unfortunately Robot Gullible escaped.
This adds to the fact that the logic/motives of the Alpha Legion are on another level altogether, so who knows? Maybe Omegon has totally joined chaos, maybe he hasn't, maybe Alpharius did, or didn't.
I like the idea that they are loyal to the Emperor, in a similar vein as the Souldrinkers chapter. But until GW actually progress the story, which they very rarely do, I have no idea for certain.

Actually, we have no idea what happened between the Ultras and Alpha Legion after the Heresy.
The full story given in the Index Astartes article states that:
1) The Ultramarines themselves have NO record of this event
2) The Inquisitor responsible for bringing all this material to light? Gone missing, declared heretical and is almost certainly an agent of... The Alpha Legion.
So, given all that, be don't really know what happened.
But we do know what most likely didn't happen.

My take on it is that the Alpha Legion always was and still is pretty withdrawn from everyone else. They're very close knit, and loyal to the legion as a whole, moreso than even their primarch(s).
So if each legionnaire is loyal to the legion, what are the legion's motives? I'm not sure. I'd think it would be something not particularly in league with either the Imperium or Chaos. Sort of the third party in 40k elections.
Also, the guys in Dawn of War are the kind of people the Alpha Legion uses to make itself look like a bunch of divided crazies.

I find the Alpha legion is working for the Imperium not for mankind's sake, but to control the Imperium in the "Emperor's" name. They probably think they know something and through controlling the Imperium they can save it.

Well the Soul Drinkers are considered Traitors because they aren't loyal to the (corrupt, by their saying) Imperium. They are loyal to the Emperor and no one else.
Maybe Alpha Legion is similar as they attack the Imperium but apparantly like the Emperor.

This post is full of win and potential.
I believe that Chaos corrupts and eventually some Alpha Legionnaires went over.
And who couldn't relate to sibling rivalry? One brother thinks they should go one way, the other thinks they should go another. While I do know about the "Two souls, one body" bit, even twins fight. One brother says we should go Chaos cause our plan failed, the other says we should play the villain and take them down from the inside. They argue, stuff happens.
Ok, while I go by most stuff by Lexicanum, I understand that if it aint from GW, it aint canon. But lets say one of the twins was killed by Guilliman. Imagine if one twin set the other one up to get killed just so he could lead the legion in the way HE wanted to (Either clandestine loyalists or Chaos). Factions in the Alpha Legion take sides and splinter off into their own agenda's.

Yes it drives me nuts when people write that Alpharius was killed by rowboat gigglyman. The whole article is suspect..
Although I will always consider the Alpah Legion traitors, If you wish to think of them as loyal you could lump them in with these nuts in the Inquisition.
Istvaanism - To this ideology, conflict is desirable to further progress through strife. It holds that mankind has made its greatest achievements after periods of conflict, such as the Horus Heresy, or Age of Apostasy. It is the place of the Istvaanians to strengthen mankind through adversity, and so follow a 'survival of the fittest' doctrine. The philosophy is named after the Isstvan III virus-bombings that initiated the Horus Heresy.

I always thought of the Alpha Legion as being more Renegade than Chaos, i think in the 3rd edition Codex it states that they like to create udivided cults or lead people to thier side; but absolutley hate the idea of deploying Deamons or brutally killing every man woman and child. I always kind of thought of them as the opposite of say the word bearers, kind of like a non chaosish chaos force.

I think they operate as a legion with many different goals, they would probaly kill those who go to chaos. If you read Legion, it shows how close the brothers we're, I dont think they would try and have each other killed.

either the Alpha Legion are the greatest heroes of the Imperium, willing to stare Chaos in the face ever second of every day and endure the hatred of all mankind for the sake of their mission, or they really are just a very devious Chaos legion.
i like what Morgrim said about them being the "Tzeentch of marines" If they really have gone over to Chaos, they may even be secretly worshiping Tzeentch, since he fits their mindset perfectly. Or maybe they are pretending to secretly worship Tzeentch to make it appear that they have turned, when they really are still secretly fighting for the Imperium. Or maybe they are pretending to be pretending to secretly worship Tzeentch, and actually are worshiping Tzeentch! Dear god this gets confusing. still, either way, Tzeentch is probably just watching all this and laughing
