I was toying with the idea of having a "trained" Tyranid army grown/controlled by some super radical branch of the Ordo Xenos.
I was inspired by the idea for an Aliens graphic novel, Outbreak I think with the same basic plan.
Does it seem at all reasonable or am I talking out my butt?
p.s. If its worth pursuing, would it be over the top to tattoo them all with the Inquistion's marking?

Ahhh here is what i did with mine.
I give the synapse creature some sort of transmitter box
give the hive guards power claws ( like their previous ones were shot off defending the leader )
And i give bar codes on the gaunts.

It always comes up, so no worries.
It just is something that *will not work* due to the Hive Mind controlling everything. The xenomorphs from the Aliens universe are individually sentient, but subservient to the Queen.
Nowhere near that for the Tyranids.

It doesn't work. The Xenomorphs could be bred away from their Hive and queen, but Tyranids need their Hive to live and increase in number. They can't be 'trained'. They could be attracted to a particular planet or nudged a certain direction by powerful psychic signals, but they have an innate psychic bond with the Hive Mind through synapse creatures. Without that, they're mindless, acting on the most basic of instincts, like insects, not dogs.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

My haemonculi has a pet ripper. I figure the Hive Mind can't really get at them within the webway, so training them would be difficult, not impossible.
I converted a ripper so that instead of leaping ferociously at an enemy, it is instead laying down relaxing, its claws tucked under it like a dog and its tail curled around it, with the ripper looking like he's gently nibbling the tip.
My gaming group was a little put out that I managed to make a ripper that was completely non-cartoony, and still looked cute. I need to figure out how to put a leash (and magnet) on him so my haemonculi can take him on his skyboard. Sort of like an attack squig, as long as they aren't attacking tyrannids to get creatures for the arena.

I would say it is entirely plausible to control Tyranids, however it would either require extensive gene manipulation to remove their subservience to the Hivemind, or extensive and expensive augmentation to physically remove their connection to the Hivemind. However, given the Adeptus Mechanicus' extensive use of such mind altering technology, the latter is quite plausible.

Except the Adeptus Mechanicus attempted it on Anphelion.
And guess what happened?
A *new* 'Hive Mind' node evolved from Gaunts and Rippers, new genii of Warriors came about, and more.
End result?
Complete slaughter of the Anphelion Adeptus Mechanicus, and then the planet being turned into a breeding ground for monstrous critters until it was hit with Exterminatus following the failed attempt to reestablish a foothold on the ground.

Back OT:
I think its a good way to give nids some more character ( I find the whole mindless thing a bit boring personaly)
I haven't read the the Anphelion Project but from what i've heard of it it seems like it would help this idea rather than stop it. We know that the imperium are ok with the idea so all good so far. Just because they failed once doesn't mean they won't try again, just with a new method and more careful.
You could give each nid a collar which psycically binds it to a powerfull human psyker.
Or
Tyranids are connected to the hive mind psycically so give each one a null collar to entirely prevent any psycic ability. Then just bioengineer them to be more naturally agressive and let them loose on what ever you like.
Model wise I could see luna's idea fitting them very well, Although I don't really like the metal claws idea. Collars on the normal nids and computers added to the bigger nids brains or spines.
Also a very artificial unnatural colour scheme would be good, albino nids would be very cool.

"It is my suspicion that the facility at Beta Anphelion IV has been the location of proscribed and heretical activity by radical elements within the Adeptus Mechanicus Departmento Biologis."
Straight from Inquisitor Lok's statement to the Conclave of Har.
So the Imperium isn't "okay with the idea". It was a radical sect of an obscure Adeptus Mechanicus branch that was doing it covertly.

Radical yes and this inquisitor viewed it as heretical but this showed there were others with enough influence to get away with it.
What one inquisitor views as heretical varies wildly. Ad Mech are constantly doing heretically stuff there just isn't much the imperium can do except ask them not to do it. The imperium doesn't officially control anyone in the Ad mech so while they may try to keep them from doing anything openly heretical unless the ad mech do anything openly heretical the imperium may just ignore it.

Considering Solomon Lok had no issues with employing a genetically enhanced Elysian detachment...I'd say he wasn't squeaky clean.
And no, the Ad Mech are not "constantly doing heretical stuff". They don't recover tainted STCs, they destroy them. They don't recover corrupted technologies...they destroy them as an affront to the Omnissiah.
The Ad Mech may not be subject to the overview of the Imperium, but they ARE subject to the Inquisition and themselves.
And the Ad Mech are far, far more tightly wound than the most Puritan of Inquisitors when it comes to things like this.

Really?
Once again:
A radical group of AdMech Biologis were trying to figure out a way to isolate Tyranid material to create more effective biological weapons. The Imperium has had some success in this(Hellfire rounds being the best example), but in incredibly controlled environments.
Turning a moon into Tyranid Park isn't one of those successes.

I'd imagine there'd be nothing stopping an ultra radical ordos xenos inq taking the anphelon project and running with it, maybe with any surviving memebers of the original project? think of all the additional resources an inq could bring to the party (psychic nullification stuff or the abilty to supplant the hive mind in synapse creatures for example) maybe in apoc games you could "ally" an inq force to the nids (only inqs, assassins and storm troopers (maybe some guard) but it'd still be pretty cool.

One of the most awsome Tyranid armies I've ever seen was put together by Dakka's own Doc Thunder.
His concept was that the Adeptus Mechanicus had captured a Tyranid ship, keeping the hybranating creatures onboard in stasis while contol boxes and other Mechanicus goodies were grafted to the creatures, breaking their link to the hive mind.
He had an entire Tyranid army kitted out with every creature converted to have some kind of gear attached.
Topped off with a far above standard paint job, it was an awsome army to see on the table.
