Does the preponderence of cries of "salt" and similar discourage you from posting rumours and/or hobby "gossip" that you have heard about.

No, because the stuff I've posted were news taken from the official website. Most of them confirmed with the official pics.

The less reliable stuff I've posted is the next two waves of releases for Infinity to be confirmed in April and May. Taken from the official forum. In a couple of weeks we should know if we were right with the first one ^^

Who cares what the disbelievers say, their motivation is to look cool on a forum which instantly makes them look dumb. Rumors are rumors!

Yeah, well my cousin Ray Ray went into a game store once and a guy wearing a red shirt said that you were NOT drunk, so I am totally going to say that my sources would suggest that Reecius is in fact NOT drunk. Yeah, so do not ever post rumours on here again Reecius because my cousin Ray Ray knew somebody once. HA HA!!! Just playin.

I go and read the News & Rumors sub-forum but I very rarely post in it. the cries of "salt" (wanted to keep it the way you typed it) are a waste of time. If you're looking at rumors, you should know to do that already. If I were to say that there was going to be a new Necron Codex where they are all dressed in pink animal costumes it would just as valid (but more ludicrous) than many of the other rumors. So no they don't really bother me but reading it in every other post is rather annoying.

It refers to the expression, "take (a story/rumour) with a pinch of salt."
meaning it is not to be believed.

It is short for "take it for a grain of salt" with emphasis on the disbelief implied in that saying.

It has to do with the expression

"take it with a grain of salt"

Which basically means to be dubious of something.

It's more about the replies of people, that are posting giant pictures of salt mines, salt cubes, etc etc. Some have extreme skepticism about any rumors, not just where Dark Eldar Rumors are concerned.

Ah , then it doesnt discourage me at all.

Ug, how about we ban stupid colloquialisms instead?

In that case, who cares if a rumor is considered dubious. It's a rumor. People will learn who's posts to trust.

Hmm, not really.

Really just out of idle curiosity after , in the space of a few days, I got 4 messages -- emails, PMs and the like--from a few people and they all mentioned how they didn't want to be the ones to post them on the N & R board as -- they felt -- that any info they posted would just be swallowed or ignored under a torrent of pictures and SALT1111 posts.

From there I asked a few other people who I know what their opinions on the board were and, generally, got a similar response.

To an extent these things go in cycles, as all memes or internet fads do, and I suspect that this situation is being made a bit worse by the apparent clampdown compared to in the past.

It's always going to be a bit of a catch 22 situation really for -- as Mr. Manchu said -- we do/will get people who either make things up or are, perhaps even innocently enough, wrong with what they say. I guess things like the recent Blood Angel fandex fiasco really only further muddy the waters here.

I still don't understand why anybody would have a problem. Rumors are salacious by nature, they're fun and sexy. And if someone is scared to post because they'll get 'salted, then I guess the rumor wasn't that good (if someone showed me a pic of a plastic t-hawk, be sure I would be screaming about it).

Maybe there should be an anonymous posting thread, that way nobody could be blamed. And trolls would obviously stay away from that.

Nah, things are fine as they are. For one thing, the salt macros are probably just a meme as Red mentioned. For another thing, if the community is going to have a valuable source for rumors posters do need to be questioned. What I would like to see is a poster include a link to past rumors they've reported accurately when they announce new information. This would build a track record. Posters who can do that are still going to be both believed and disbelieved. Frankly, there's nothing too pernicious about a rumor OP followed by a ton of pics of salt and salt mines. It's not a personal attack, after all.

It's more the fact that certain mods tend to close any rumour thread on sight if it even dares ask a question...

Well now i know what 'salt' means in this context then it should'nt bother me. Its not ignorant to be up to date with the latest text shortcut, conversely it's ignorant to rely on them.

Anyone who cries 'salt' is clearly:

1. Too lazy or ignorant to formulate a proper response.

2. Too ignorant to be worth correcting, let them wallow in their stupidity.

3. Locked in with juvenile netspeak to be worth considering anyway. Treat them the same as block caps shouters and l33tsp34kers and other morons.

4. Too ignorant and stupid to take a joke if the post is intentionally dubious as sarcasm or.. too immature to rise above it if it is not.

So go ahead and scream salt and throw rattles out of prams. We need to know who the ignorami are for the benefit of our Ignore buttons. After all that is what ignorami are for to be roundly ignored and stepped over on the way through a nice pleasant visit to Dakka.

The salt people just haven't learnt to distinguish between news/confirmations and rumours or can't deal with rumours. Too many of them can be annoying but don't keep me from posting and reading interesting rumours. They allow me to see a blurry pic of the future, ahead of the 2 week window of the GW website.

I didn't know that the "salt" thing was not a common expression. I use it here in Dakka because is the only phrase I know to denote the lack of trust in something said (by me or by any other).

And I learnt it here in Dakka reading you so...

It wouldn't discourage me from posting, although I am curious as to why people 'salt'.

It seems that an rumour without hard evidence gets 'salted'. This, however, is absurd because if you can prove what you say it is no longer a rumour - its news.

By definition all rumours should be 'taken with a pinch of salt' because they're unverified - that's the nature of the beast.

It just seems to be internet tautology by those with nothing better to do.
