Jealous that Horus is Warmaster

hello i applied for a job at games workshop as a trainee manager and got through to the recruitment day which is to be held on the 15th of february 2011 i was hoping that someone might be able to tell me what to expect
ive been involved with the hobby for years but had a hiatus and completely missed the 7th edition
i got involved again when IOB came out and ive been moddeling and converting even when i wasnt playing
this is the first time ive applied for a job with them and really dont know what to expect, its a long way to travel so once i leave the house i cant really change any plans or pick anything else up, so any advice would be greatly appreciated even if its just an idea of whether i should go in full interview get up or dress down a little
thankyou and i hope someone can supply some help

Long hours, no company and extreme goals. Dont mean to damper your enthusiasm but GW tends to hire managers and fire them in a few months when they dont meet their impossible goals.. then just hire someone else (repeat over and over)

First job is always a tough one.
Idealily it should be hard enough to convince you to go on to university.

I was heavily recruited by them last year (ridiculously) but my main concern with them was $$ amount, and the fact that they went through 6 managers (literally) in a little over a year....and three since they tried to get me. Best of luck but they don't exactly have a steady track record. Keep your resume fresh haha.

If you want a management role don't go with GW you will just be doing a customer adviser job for adviser money but one other person (if your lucky ! ) and loads of hassle and headache. If your just doing it for the experience I can't see you actually learning anything worth while with them ..
But you do get a discount and you get to tell fanboys about the exciting new releases that you've just made up

I don't have any advice from experience to give you, but from what I've seen GW is moving towards a structure where the hobby store managers are more like retail salesman than hobbyists. So don't worry about rules and painting ability, they'll teach you what you need to know about that.

I haven't been to one of the GW recruitment days myself (failed at the phone call) but I know people that have from what I understand they have several different testing methods so just be prepared for most eventualities make sure you have answers to the most common question sales experience, team leading, pressure situations ect. If you have a local GW pop down talk to the manager there ask if they have any pointers for you the worst they can do is say no sorry. Other then that treat it like any other interview and remember they are looking for sales advisor's / managers with the main focus on the sales, make sure you are knowledgeable on the company as a whole and their business not just the products.

Most people do not join games workshop for the money, so that shouldn't be your number one priority, try and remember yourself the first time you walked into a GW store, what was that experience like.
Think about the good points, and remember the bad ones.
GW Ultimately are very passionate motivated and completely want to dominate their position in every potentials teenagers bedroom with their products.
That's what they're looking for it's not all about the hobby any more times have moved on hobbyists have other things to spend money on.
It's about recruiting and keeping hobbyists gaming longer and selling if you do the first two selling comes very naturally.
Remember whilst at the recruitment day take a look at your competition see what they are doing make yourself stand out for all the right reasons. So be positive passionate motivated inspiring and a job offer will no doubt happen. So good luck

I worked for GW way back in the day before they came up with recruitment day, I can tell you that GW is a great company to work for provided you get placed in a store that is making money. If your in a slow store or in a store not hitting your goals you will quickly hate your life.
As long as your not looking for a job that pays well, working for GW for a few months is well worth the discount. A lot of the people you'll meet at the store level are pretty good guys but as you meet people up the ladder you'll notice they arent such great guys (not unique to GW)

Bollocks. Having been on (and promptly failed) the actual (now defunct) management course, you'll be fine. Don't so much learn the 10 Commandments, understand them. Get what they are asking you to do, and you'll be fine.
Just don't go posting any management-eyes only stuff on the Interwebs, like what I did. Whoops.
The goals *are* achievable. It all depends who your Regional is. Me, I spent 2 weeks in Stockport (lame) 2 weeks in Blackpool (the sucks) and then 6 weeks in Northampton (hello to anyone who guesses who I actually am). Communication is key. Not sure, call another manager. Got an idea? Run it past another manager. You only feth up when you think yourself to alright on your own. You aren't. The support structures are there. Use them.

I know someone that got through a second interview for a Store Manager job but ended up not getting the gig. I'm sure you'll do fine. Just be enthusiastic about the hobby, which you should be if you're interviewing for a gaming store job.

I went to a similar recruitment day for GW a few years ago. It was actually very fun, and at times challenging. The "interview" part was actually only about 30-40 minutes of the whole day. The rest of the day we were involved in different activities, from showing how to play a game(didn't need to know specific rules, was more of an exercise on how well we can express rules to new people), getting into groups and creating our own game, and other things that tested us in different ways. It was about 8 hours of activities. It was actually alot of fun. I'm not sure if they are the same anymore.

Beard is all I need mention. Automatically Appended Next Post: P.S. Intro games are not so much about rules (tell them what they need to roll, less of the why) and far more about showing the fun, narrative, engrossing side. Anyone can roll a handful of dice. Few will actually enjoy the mere act of rolling said dice. BUT, to make the dice become Bolt Rounds, detonating in the carcass of the enemy, or the Powerklaw descending, crushing the life from Humanties greatest hero, proving once and for all that you are the 'ardest thing around, that's a different thing.
Best way to do it...think back. Regress yourself to NooBdom. What got you hooked? Why did it hook you? Keep that in mind, and expres it well and you can't go far wrong. Remember....promote the Hobby. Do not promote your hobby.

I think good advice would be to consider the various ways people are motivated into the hobby, spend some time thinking about various ages/backgrounds of people and how you would approach them.
For example, you will need to be able to chat to parents about an expensive hobby for their kids, some will know nothing about it, others will be dads and sons talking things through. You'd need to consider things from various angles.
The good stores ( imo) are the ones where every staffer is capable of putting together an interesting campaign idea.
You will need to practice yor waaaggh as well, that is one thing they ask everyone to do.

Then yes once at least lol Possibly in Stockport but more likely in Northampton.
I have done the phone interview twice, and should have been going to this months recruitment day.
Alas I move house the same day!
And it looks like it has moved to March for me at least
Good look with it mind
