Stressed from commission works so I spent my Sunday night painting this piece just to take a break from other stuff. Took about 4 hrs straight to paint this mini (modeling done the other day along with his gang)
Totally insomniac and still don't know how will I cope with school next week! URGH - sucks being nocturnal.
Anyway... I've followed suggestions people have given me from the previous project. This one was painted with a completely different approach.

Saw this when poking around your facebook page to comment on the last thread. Got to say, I love it. In fact, I would have said that already, if I hadn't been caught up by that snazzy sorcerer. Can't wait to see what you crank out next!

Although English isn't my first language - please don't think that I have a limited vocab just because the only reply I can usually think of is 'thank you'! (and I assume it's the most appropriate one out there)
Gotta admit that some C&C I've received from the SH batch made me doubt my style/skill deeply - Since then I felt kind of lost but at the same time those criticisms and comments helped me a lot to continue with the style I'd like to achieve.

I received my GK stuff today (DK and Termies) and was so keen on doing a 'rush' job just to sell them on a local site. Like an excited kid, I opened them boxes right away and said to myself "LET'S FINISH THEM ALL IN ONE NIGHT!!!!"
Result - haha... disastrous..
Clogged my Iwata Eclipse with VMA silver so I switched to my Paasche VL - not so great
Since I was rushing to finish everything overnight, I didn't wait long enough for the varnish to dry (either that or I didn't spray thick enough) so as soon as I applied my usual oil+turp wash, the Dreadknight died.. now he's resting in a tub of simple green and I pretty much wasted many hours of work just by rushing it.
I have always used metallic since when I started painting. I have always felt intimidated by the NMM technique Until February this year, when someone said to me to try NMM.
Now I find it really hard to go back - for some reason when I use metallic paint for my cheap commissions, I find it really annoying because it doesn't give the same feeling like when you paint with normal paints - somehow it feels like metallic paints slide around a lot more around the surface. Although I'm not great at NMM, but now I find it more satisfying and easier to paint than using metallic paints.
Was reading MajorTom's GK tutorial last night - great stuff, but maybe I'll try it with NMM instead of true metallic.
Not a fan of the gun , the lighting is good, but upon looking at it many times on different pics you posted, it doesnt seem like there is a source ( yes i know it came from the plasma coil )
but it doesnt look like the coil is enough to create that light.
Looks abit like as if someone just lit that area with a flash light.
Hey, I saw your other thread for the SH guys and the Chaos sorcerer- I figured I should say something as I find myself going back to these miniatures. The OSL and your technique is excellent- even if the Chiarascuro wasn't perfect, your blending has a solid base... which is more than I can say for mine. As some of us have already pointed out on the other thread, the OSL and light-sourcing was a bit unfocused for the SH, but the Librarian has pretty much sold me. If I had the money, I'd pick up a brand new SH set just to rip off your idea... for a personal playset, of course.
For this Azrael, I like the fact that the faint light and color is there on the model, but muted by shadow and distance to the sources of light. Again, blending stands out... the only thing I'm not particularly convinced on is the light source on the plasma gun. Not sure, and I'm second-guessing myself because it's been a long time since I held that miniature- perhaps it looks different from photo to actually holding it. Either way, I see it on his face, but I'm not sure if it should be more leading up to the face, or less and focused on a different area.
That being said, you have an absolutely beautiful and unique style of painting. I look forward to great things from your art when it's perfected... and mimicked by the masses. I know I'm going to give it a shot at some point to practice OSL.
@ HF Izanagi - As for the face, the other half isn't lit by plasma light - it's just his face. If I wanted to be realistic then I'd leave black with subtle OSL from the plasma coil.
One thing that I'm trying to get the hang of is the balance between realism and the aesthetic aspect of mini painting.
Like LunaHound said about the gun being lit unrealistically - I thought it would look nicer to define the edges with white, even though there's no light source around that area. Maybe I'll try and be more subtle with highlighting, but normally I love high contrast so I just go for pure white HL.
MajorTom11 wrote:I think the plasma coil looks great personally, and it is not so unrealistic that the benefits of the exaggeration are nullified.
I am very happy you are getting the kind of feedback you deserve after the hiccup on the SH thread, I really, really love what you are doing!
p.s - thanks for reading the article btw
Thanks!
Your article is really helpful - I was going to give on metallic GK but realized that you mixed VMA or other metallic colors with thinner so I tried to overcome my clogphobia and mixed VMA Steel / thinner at 1:3 and it worked out fine without any clogging.
I used a different approach at zenithal lighting though - I like working on bright models so I went from Grey Primer - BGmetal - VMA steel and then create zenithal shadows with black+deepsea blue.
I love it! Very grim dark and the glows are amazing, the base too, realistic looking with the broken cables and rubble. All togeather, fantastic display!
Compared to your first posting this really, really knocks it out of the park! You can actually make out some of the colours and the detail, the shadows and the glow are truly spot on, and having two seperate (different-coloured) sources of light really helps make the whole display a lot more interesting to look at.
As a critic of your first batch of minis, consider this example to have converted me completely. Truly fantastic work.
