SO just thought i'd introduce myself.
Ive been gaming for about 13 years, Started off with warhammer 40k (chaos)
Now mainly play historical games (ww2, wars of the roses, American Cvil War)
As much as I like the models and games of games workshop, i hate what they have morphed into over the last 5 years, so I now refuse to by anything from them.
Having said that i love their models, and their game's a nice light hearted change from the seriousness of historical.
so, Greetings Comrades!

it depnds on your tastes...normally i find it best to go with my favourite period.
My favourite 'historical set' would be rapid fire ww2, its a fast play game, quite simplistic but allows brigade and division size games in the space of an evening.
I play Wars of the Roses, but I ave never found a set of commercial rules i actually like so me and friend wrote our own and they cover from about 1300 - 1600
My American civil war games again use home grown rules. These were inspired by the 'firepower' rules in the perry box of acw soldiers. although 'Johnny Rebel' do very good rules.
Another Good game (when you get used to it) is Red Poppy/White Feather, i belive it is free off the internet. it's squad based WW2 and you men gain experience and skills and stuff, easilly linked to a campaign, you only need about 15 figures too. I use it for both WW2 and A very british civil war. It's a lot like necromunda in the way it's done but a bit unconventional.
