I'm pretty hooked on the old Touch of Frost shows which are closely followed by Murdoch Mysteries.
Frost is just a no bs kind of guy that just wades in and gets 'er done. Murdoch is kind of fun because of the occasional steam punk elements, like the Tesla episode, that get injected into the show. What I also like about Murdoch is the way the characters that surround him help him along.
Excellent shows, both.

Uhhh...

I have far too many to name, but here's a sampling...

Psych
White Collar
Burn Notice (follows the MacGyver format of investigation though...get approached with a problem, check into it, solve with liberal application of explosives and gunfire)
Castle

BBC's new show "Copper" is pretty good as well, but it's only on its fourth episode so it's a bit early to say whether the show as a whole is going to succeed.

I'll limit myself to currently running shows and go with Psych. Sure the mysteries are secondary, but it still counts. Sherlock would be on the list as well, but at only 3 episodes every year or so, I'm not really sure how to classify it.

I haven't seen "Copper" but I have heard good things and hope to see it. I'm somewhat looking forward to "Elementary" because it will either be an absolute train wreck or surprisingly fun, and either is a win.

Although it's kinda cheating as it's barely a detective show at times, I'd say NCIS.

You guys get 'Touch of Frost' over in the States!?

That's mental! Do you also get 'Cracker' and 'Prime Suspect'?

Yup, although I haven't seen either of them yet. At least two of them had regular weekly runs as mystery shows on PBS and I'd catch Frost as my work schedule would allow. All three are available on Net Flix here now and I'm currently going back through the Frost episodes.
Another detective seriesI liked watching were the Life on Mars shows.

The Mentalist is probably my favorite.

I don't know if these, "count" per say, but I enjoyed House, and I enjoy Grimm.

There is supposed to be some new Sherlock with Lucy Lui as Watson coming out before too long. I wonder if that's going to be any good.

I watch and have seen far too many too choose.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

More of a cop show then a detective show, but i've always been a massive fan of The Bill.

I think shows like the The Wire and Law & Order are worth a mention due to the fact they have actual detectives doing the work and don't have to rely on a "specialist" to help them solve every case. (Looking at you Castle, Bones and The Mentalist .)

I'd have the say The Wire is my favorite, and I also really enjoyed Luther. I never got into the classical detective stuff much.

+1 Columbo rocks. It's a pity that before he died, Peter Falk couldn't even remember playing him.

I also like some Sherlock Holmes, the ones with Basil Rathbone & Jeremy Brett, and Perry Mason, but that's not exactly a detective show as such.

Yeah, me too. If you can ever get hold of the 'Red Riding' trilogy, then I would strongly recommend it. Not a series per se, closer to the format Sherlock is in, i.e. three long-form episodes. Very good though.

Probably work

Columbo was pretty good. The BBC Sherlock has far exceeded my expectations so far. It might have been more of a "law drama", but I enjoyed Perry Mason as well.

I just checked, and Net Flix has it, so I'll give Red Riding a go. One thing that stands out for me about Frost is the fact that it is a big thing when guns are issued to the police on certain cases, but it's cool the way they handle most cases without them.
