All you fellow Imperial Guard players.
How many of you use the Vulture Gunship and how well are they accepted by your opponents?
I am in the process of building one and was wondering what kind of reactions I can expect.

I've been on the receiving end of a pair of vultures, as guard actually, and though they are devastating, they aren't so much so that people start whining. I certainly didn't. I even thought it was funny when he decimated my outflanking platoon of guardsmen with it.

I dont have a problem with Vendettas. I do with Vultures. 20 shots S5 BS4 TL pinning on a model with vector dancer(seriously? a gunship with vector dancer? even DE fliers dont get that).
That averages a kill on AV11 (2.97 glances) every round. Playing with Corsair Nightwings i know that vector dancer finds rear armor all the time on fliers or vehicles.
Where Vendettas sometimes cannot find targets easily due to flier rules, Vector dancer removes that nearly entirely. You can fire on a target forever thanks to the 45 degree arch of weapons.
On inf it kills 4 marines a turn then can pin them. VS GEQ it kills 10, 7.5 if they go to ground in area.
Only thing that makes this thing at all balanced is AV11. Still, 3 HP means it survives a quad gun shot (assuming the quad gun is still alive) without needing to jink and still gets 6 hits from the punisher even it it does jink.
Throw all this into an army that ALSO has the vendetta to back this thing up and its stupid good. The Vendetta always had the maneuverability problems and an inability to deal with infantry of almost any type effectively. The vulture has none of these problems and can deal with vehicles nearly as easy by finding rear armor turn 3-4-5 (hell, 2 some times if they are advancing).
I wouldnt mind if it was only for an army that could not get vendettas, but now you have two complimentary fliers in an edition where armies already struggle with fliers. Also, the vendetta is larger than the vulture so it can shield the vulture if the enemy does have skyfire so the AV11 weakness is mitigated.

DE don't get it because they're fast jets, while the Vulture is a helicopter. Helicopters have better maneuverability, therefore the Vulture gets vector dancer and the DE flyers don't.
That averages a kill on AV11 (2.97 glances) every round. Playing with Corsair Nightwings i know that vector dancer finds rear armor all the time on fliers or vehicles.
And a Vendetta averages 1.9 glances or better on AV 11, except 1.5 of that is AP 2 penetrating hits (nice to have if you don't succeed in glancing it to death) and the Vendetta can actually damage things that are better than AV 11 while the Vulture just sits there being uselesss.
On inf it kills 4 marines a turn then can pin them. VS GEQ it kills 10, 7.5 if they go to ground in area.
IOW a 155 point unit kills 60 points of marines a turn. I'm really not seeing how this is overpowered.
Only thing that makes this thing at all balanced is AV11.
AV 12 actually.
I wouldnt mind if it was only for an army that could not get vendettas, but now you have two complimentary fliers in an edition where armies already struggle with fliers.
Well, lucky for you the Vulture and Vendetta are both fast attack choices, so an army that takes Vultures can't have Vendettas.
Also, the vendetta is larger than the vulture so it can shield the vulture if the enemy does have skyfire so the AV11 weakness is mitigated.
Err, no. The models are the same size. The Vendetta is "larger" only in that it's very slightly wider, but that additional size makes no difference in-game and it would be impossible to cover a Vulture entirely and shield it from AA fire. The Vendetta could give it a cover save of course, but so can any flyer that is willing to be a meatshield for a 5+.

About 150-160 points, depending on your exact choice of weapons and upgrades.

105 actually, 30 for the punisher cannons but then you loose two other guns.
Same size as a Vendetta / Valk as its the same chassis. And it's not fast attack - it's heavy support. Unless the rules for it in IA8 have been changed.

Vulture isn't underpriced or overpowered.

Rending doesn't give AP2 against tanks, since you aren't rolling to wound against tanks. (unless the punisher does something different).
I played against a Vulture the other day. It's not too bad. I'd rather face Vultures then Vendettas any day.

That's because you have the obsolete 5th edition update pdf. The current Vulture rules (which are significantly different from the pdf) are in IA:Aeronautica, where it has the " 40k approved" stamp. Automatically Appended Next Post: Crazyterran wrote:Rending doesn't give AP2 against tanks, since you aren't rolling to wound against tanks. (unless the punisher does something different).
You misread a bit. The Vendetta has AP 2 which makes its penetrating hits worth more than the punisher Vulture's AP -.

No (unfortunately). Someone just misread where I was talking about AP 2 on lascannons and thought it was a reference to punisher cannons.

Fair enough.
