When kitbashing heavy weapons teams for the guard army, is it required for the 2 guardsman to be on one of the large heavy weapons team bases for it to be legal?

Thanks

I would say it's up to friend's and FLGS discretion. I wouldn't mind if my opponent put some effort in it and didn't do it to model for advantage.

As for a tournament probably no. Depends on if they allow custom models or GW only.

The rule of cool probably stands here, but I like to see two models for the same reason I don't like single rider attack bikes. The base has two wounds like the attack bike. You could probably get away with it anyway especially if you do a characterful conversion.

I've seen some pretty neat gunners with a casualty for the second model. Like Chi3f said as long as it doesn't look like you're modeling for advantage (guy laying prone on the base by himself with nearly zero visibility), you would likely get away with just the gunner.

I plan on using GW models. (Although may contain a few random non gw bits to make everything work out) I just want to get more out of all those bits in the heavy weapons box than just 3 teams. I just wasn't sure if the 2 guardsman need to be on 1 large base, or if 2 guardsmen on regular bases would still be legal to represent a heavy weapons team. I'm okay with getting the larger bases if I need too. Just wasn't sure if I needed too.

I've often wondered how well it would go down if you had a weapons team split up on to multiple bases. You could mount the Las/autocannon or heavy bolter on a 60mm base with its crew, Put the mortars on 40mm bases with its crew on 25mm bases and then have 2 guardsmen wielding missile launchers/rockets both on 25mm bases.

The old heavy weapons were 2 separate models, however as the new ones go on a big base thats what should be used. If you're playing with friends, who cares, but if you're doing oick up games or tournaments be prepared for people to get snarky.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Well see, this is where oddities can easily arise. For example, in the DKoK army list it says that Grenadier HF/HS are a 2 man team just like other HWs but while the HF is on a single large base, the HS is not, it would end two separate bases.

Now if you look at the Elysian drop troops, the oddities continue because their mortar & HB teams are single bases but their ML teams are all on individual bases. Additionally, their SW teams are mostly on 60mm bases even though per the codex they are individual models, not teams. Ergo, the two different concepts GW uses for such are in contrast with each other. The codex says very clearly which are teams (1 base) & which are not (2 bases) but GW also says to use the base the model came with (veteran's prerogative). So by that same logic, an older, metal heavy weapons team can actually be, basically, 3 seperate models for all intents & purposes because that's how they came.

My personal thoughts: stick with standard convention wherever you game regularly. If rule of cool trumps all in your shop like it does mine, by all means. But if you plan to play somewhere you're unfamiliar with the conventions or are planning to attend an organized event such as a tourney where players from different areas will be, then buy some 60mm bases & set them up to be able to accept the 25mm individual bases just for completeness sake. Hell, even easier is trace some 60mm onto foamcoare, then cut them out, mark out your weapon location & the location of the figs on their own bases, now cut out holes for the 25mm bases & then glue some card onto the bottom of the "big base" so that you can insert the individual bases into it. Base these accordingly to your army's theme & then for tourneys, just drop em in there for completeness sake. Oh & seal the edges, foamcore just looks kinda tacky unless you do & really detracts from your painting/basing.

Pg.3 6th Ed 40k rulebook:

"The rules in this book assume that models are mounted on the base they are supplied with. Sometimes, a player may have models in his collection on unusually modelled bases. Some models aren't supplied with a base at all. In these cases (which are, in all fairness, relatively few and far between) you should always feel free to mount the model on a base of appropriate size if you wish, using models of similar type as guidance."

You should mount them on 60mm dreadnought bases. The number of guardsmen you have on the base is irrelevant - as in the guard codex the weapon teams are 2 wound single models.

I am currently taking commissions.

I like to do my models with the gunner removable like this, helps represent the 2 wound characteristic. As for the rest, I don't see why it would be mandatory i just think the base needs to stay the proper dimensions
