My friend is in the unfortunate situation of trying to get Soulstorm to work on Windows 8.
Anyone had any success with this?

Mine works fine on Windows 8. Just have to change compatibility to Windows XP. I haven't actually found an old game that doesn't work on it. Even Balls of steel pin ball works.

Here's a weird story (and sorry for the necropost but this just happened).

Last weekend we had a deep freeze down here in Texas, and I installed soulstorm to alleviate boredom. Everything worked fine, got myself good and frustrated on hard mode for several days.

Come back to it this weekend, suddenly it says it's incompatible with my computer and I need windows ME, 2000, or better. I uninstalled and reinstalled the game, and I still get this. None of the compatability modes work. Anyone have any idea and can offer some assistance?

(note to self, do not EVER un-install)

Deep freeze was a doozy, and Im a little further south than you!

Are you able to run your windows in a ghost mode where it runs in an older windows setting? Even some newer computers can run Win95 settings to play even older games, there should be no reason tho soulstorm doesnt work... Its so hard trying to give advice tho online, I work better hands on able to fiddle with it. I hope/pray I never run into this as the first dawn of war series has been one game I have never gotten bored of!

Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas, and oil,

'The Light at the End of the Tunnel' has been turned off.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Oi guys! I believe I just discovered the key to making Soulstorm work on windows 8. By chance really. Anyway what I did:

1. Right click on Soulstorm icon on desktop.
2. Go to "Run with graphics processor."
3. Choose "Change default graphics processor..."
You should find yourself in the "NVIDIA Control Panel" and in a subcategory of 3D Settings>Manage 3D Settings.
4. Under the "Program Settings," NOT the "Global Settings," I selected the game, Soulstorm, in the "1. Select a program to customize:"
5. Ignore the "2. Select the preferred graphics processor for this program:"
6. Under the "3. Specify the settings for this program:" scroll down to the setting "Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration."
7. Choose the "Compatibility performance mode."
8. Open the game, and you should receive the game's graphics' settings. Just go thru it and then try opening the game again. It should work.
9. Opinion: It seems to be the case where most if not all games do work with the (dare I say it) hated Windows 8, it's just a matter of compatibility settings being changed for the GPU stuff. Btw, I'm not knowledgeable in the how to fixing of games. I just came across this by playing around and guessing. ^.^

IMPORTANT: If this works, this should maybe work with all other games like Empire Earth II, Supreme Commander, Command & Conquer series, and Total Wars series. However, I've yet to test all those other programs with this setting I've changed. But I was encountering a similar problem in most of the games I've listed above so it should work.

I hope this solves your problem. (Lets just hope that my game continues to run and not bail out on me at the last minute, making this post void.) 0.o
Sincerely,

RedShard

A Heretic may see the truth and seek redemption. He may be forgiven his past and will be absolved in death. A Traitor can never be forgiven. A Traitor will never find peace in this world or the next. There is nothing as wretched or as hated in all the world as a Traitor. - Cardinal Khrysdam, Instructum Absolutio
