http://www.azcentral.com/story/news/weird/2014/05/19/maine-suspect-surrenders-mountain-dew-mill/9289331/

PORTLAND, Maine — Police say a home invasion suspect who'd been hiding in the woods for several days had two conditions for giving up: chocolate milk, and Mountain Dew.

Police say 30-year-old Michael Crockett Jr. of Buxton was thirsty and hungry — and covered with mosquito bites and ticks — when he surrendered Sunday night.

York County Chief Deputy William L. King Jr. told the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1jNBgRG ) that he purchased Mountain Dew and chocolate milk under terms of the surrender terms after the man emerged from woods with his hands held high. Crockett's lawyer, Amy Fairfield also ordered a pizza.

Police say Crockett is one of three people suspected of breaking into a Buxton home and assaulting and tying up the 60-year-old woman occupant last month. Two others were already arrested.

In these situations, does the suspect actually get to have the mountain dew, chocolate milk, and pizza prior to being taken into custody?

Edit: I guess I should have read the article, since it's answered therein.

I suppose that old movie trope of "we don't negotiate with terrorists" isn't always true...

Then again, as a tax payer, I think I could stomach footing the bill on chocolate milk and mountain dew in resolving a crisis situation.

In a lot of cases its probably better for them to go along with it, then just screw the guy over at the last second.

Well would you either want to put a guy that's disgruntled, but content into prison, or one who now has a grudge and'll create bad publicity? Yup, if only all it took was few dollars of food and a drink with all cases, the number of police injured on duty would plummet.

We have a nonviolent end to what could have been a dangerous standoff/manhunt, and the focus is on Mountain Dew.

People are always attracted to the disgusting and macabre. It's why people slow down to get a better look at traffic accidents. There isn't a lot of difference between Mountain Dew and a four car pile-up.

A non-violent end to a stand-off is always preferred. People get talked down from stuff all of the time.

Good on the cops for not just storming in there and shooting him up.

Unless it was squirt guns filled with Mountain Dew. Which is a lot of fun, I can say from personal experience.

A right to have type 2 diabetes. There is so much sugar in mountain dew I'm surprised it doesn't crystallise in the can. It doesn't even taste particularly nice.

Probably work

Better that this ran taxpayers the cost of junk food than the cost of bullets.

That being said, those are the last food and drink I would ask for in that situation. Also, what kind of woods do you have to be in to be covered in ticks? I've done my fair share of camping, even genuine "roughing it" camping, not just at state parks, and I've had a couple ticks, but covered?

Well, if it is Maine, and the height of Spring/early summer when everything is hatching out there, and you're hiding out...I could see it. The Maine forests are rough as hell and they CRAWL with bugs, which I assume is even worse when you are focusing on hiding and staying out of sight (like say, burying yourself in brush on ground level with no fire, sleeping platform or protection).

WAT me tax payers monies is going into junk food?!

Im sure it was just an exaggeration about him being covered. or he was combat crawling across the entire forest.

I dont know though if i had to have a last meal, it would probably involve pizza and mountain dew.

It's pretty clear that Pepsi was behind this whole thing, it was a publicity stunt to sell more mountain dew, and to push their new line of diet chocolate milk, Coco Lite.
