I wonder how the dynamic of the game would change if after rolling to hit, armor saves are rolled, and then on all failed rolls the wounds are determined.

I mean fluff wise most hits are only going to cause wounds once they penetrated through the armor. If a riptide is being tarpitted by a swarm of guardsmen, and it takes 15 hits, most of them will bounce off the armor, but the ones that do get through must now be determined if they are actually powerful enough to damage it.

Statistically? Nothing.

It might drop the time a game takes by a minute or two. Cutting out an entire set of rolls sounds like a good plan to me.

It's just rearranging them though, not cutting anything out.

It would actually take longer when a unit is partially in cover against a good ap weapon, as you would have to roll 1 save a piece for the few guys in the woods, then make the attacker roll to see if they actually got wounded to know how many guys extra outside the cover needed to be removed.

Rules like rending, that do something special on the to-wound roll, would have to be re worked.

It's possible to keep them doing basically the same, but the hassle with accounting for different models that already made their save against schrodinger's rending wound would be real. No point changing that IMO.
