Ghastly Grave Guard
|
Hey all, I'm finishing up buying everything for my Crimson Fists and I've noticed that I have an awful lot of characters/ HQs. Does anyone else find this? Now that I look at it, I have a similar thing for my Orks but to a far smaller scale. My Crimson Fist officers include:
-Pedro Kantor
-2 Captains on foot
-a Captain with jump pack
-a Captain on a bike
-a Terminator Captain (Lysander model)
-a Chaplain on foot
-a Terminator Chaplain
-a Chaplain on bike
-2 Librarians
-a Terminator Librarian
-a Techmarine
My Orks aren't near as bad, but still include:
-2 Warbosses
-Dok Grotsnik
-2 Pain Boys
-a Big Mek
-3 Meks
-loads of Nobz
How about everyone else? How top-heavy are your armies?

I’ve got more captains then are allowed in a chapter. Plus extra support staff. I’m working on painting my way through the full matrix of HQ options, with each in TDA, PA, JP, and bike.
Now, I’ve also got a ton of troops (and elites/FA/HS) but I’ll admit to having way more characters then I need.
They just look so cool!

Yeah, I'm guilty of buying any metal Space Marine character I find that I don't already have. The best part is finding second-hand ones and paying less than I would for the "Fine"cast or plastic versions.

I can have 4 heralds in one HQ slot, so yes.
I have:
Lord of change (305 points)
2 DP's (2x 325= 650 points)
2 heralds (2x 95= 190 points)
Makes 1245 out of 1500 points.
Though my DP's become heavy support they are still "top" I think, but without them it's still almost a third of the pionts.
At 1850 I have more heralds and some extra upgrades for the DP's, so the percentage gets bigger.

Well Even though i have so many of the HQ models for my army I have more points in my HS section I believe... I have 4 Vauls wrath batteries, 5 Fire Prisms, 6 Wraithlords, 30 Dark Reapers, and 4 War Walkers. When Wraithkinghts were HS i had 4 of those as well. Automatically Appended Next Post: Although fast attack might come close as well. I have 30 Swooping Hawks, 18 Warp Spiders, 7 Vypers, and 3 Crimson hunters. If we want to go all the way to LoW I have 2 Revenant, 2 Scorpion Superheavy Tanks, 1 Phantom, 2 Avatar of Khaine and 5 Wraithkngiths

The issue is that HQ's are just too much fun to design.

-Generic Magos
Militia:

Guard and Grey Knights not so much, but for Daemons I have:
Fateweaver
Lord of change
Be'lakor
3 princes
2 Tzeentch heralds
2 nurgle heralds
D Thirster
At 1850 I usually have to run a second detachment so I can fit all of my HQ's... They are by far the most fun though.

Morphing Obliterator

For my Exorcists I have:
- My Chapter Master with JP, SB and Relic Blade build from the PA GK box and DA parts
- A second version of him on foot with SS and Axe, this one is one of the old metal Masters of the Chapter
- A five man honour guard
- A Termi-Captain with dual LCs for the 1st Company
- The Black Reach Captain of the 2nd
- Silas Albarec of the 3rd
- Waite Ryder Master of the Fleet and Captain of the 4th. He is build from the limited edition Captain with PF and SB they gave out after they redid their online store. I play him with the rules for Kantor
- Erin Laros of the 5th with a telescopic heavy flamer to play him as Vulkan Hestan
- The incredibly beautiful Chaplain in Termi Armour
- A Chaplain with JP and PF
- The Chaplain from BaC
- A libby in TDA with sword and shield
- A libby with staff
- A libby with axe
- The libby from DV with sword
- A MotF with Conversion Beamer
- And lastly a Techmarine
The last time I looked it made up roughly a third of my SM army and as you can see I don't like bikes

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too! |

Im the total opposite my list has
Knight Commander Pask...
Thats it...
But it really does come down to preference. To me some armoes have really cool characters to play and Skitarii have none and I like armored companies so there I am. I think having cool characters running around adds a lot of fun to the game for sure

Librarian with Axe and Plasma Pistol
Librarian in Terminator Armor (the Finecast one)

Ethereal on Hover Drone
Cadre Fireblade
Darkstrider
For actual Chaos Space Marines:
Be'lakor

Lol with necrons I've wanted to take every single unique HQ(though ID rather take 0 if I could, I like all their formations so much better). Same with Eldar and seer councles(I have enough guys to run 2) librarians in GK(4 (2 CADs). Skitarri doesn't have an HQ though, and I personally have the DE HQs... With GW I know people love those wolf Lords, but meh, I just take them for TW and allied drop pods hehe... Also Logan Grimer is a boss.

At one point I had way more librarians than I needed, finally sold them off a while back to DA players in need. At one point I had:
Zeke
3x terminator librarians (the finecast and 2 custom)
3x bike librarians, custom made
6x basic librarians, the DV, 2 modified DV, 2 custom and a finecast
I've now narrowed it down to Zeke, 3 basic, 2 terminator, and 2 bike, but can always borrow my others from the guys I sold them to since the keep their stuff at our club and gave me the required approval.
On top of that, I do have 6 company masters (3 custom) that I almost never use because I have a librarian fetish.

-1x Herald of Slaanesh
-1x Herald of Nurgle
-3x DPs
-Fateweaver
-Blue Scribes
Apparently, I don't like Khorne...
My other armies aren't that top heavy though. I've only got two HQs for my Tau and Dark Eldar, three for my Eldar, and I guess my Guard are actually somewhat top heavy with seven.

I generally try to limit the number of Characters in my armies. This is partly because I find that a few well-painted characters have a much greater impact visually than a large number which just blend into the rest if the army, but it's mostly because centering your tactics around a few key buffs will generally lead to more interesting games.
Also, as codices and editions change, I've found that line units are the more dependable investments of time and money. In two editions' time I'm more likely to find a use for another Assault Squad than I am five identical Biker-Techmarines or something.

1 Techmarine in full Harness

4 Foot Captains (TH/SS captain, 2LC metal guy from Medusa campaign, a PA Sword/Plasma Pistol counts as Sicarius, 1 counts as Pedro done up as a UM)
Marneus Calgar
That's all I can remember...
